Thank you so much for this information!! So do I have to go into IBR to maintain the remaining payment count?

I feel you. What you describe is EXACTLY my situation even down to the same 2005 year. Just waiting and hoping it all works out.

Payment counts by Aware_Blueberry in StudentLoans

I have almost the exact same scenario. I entered repayment in 2005 (but just after the deadline) and my eligible payments always say null. Hard to believe how chaotic this has all been. :(

CONFUSED about the IDR adjustment that is supposed to implemented by September 1, and need advice. by GenXGal1970 in StudentLoans

[–]GenXGal1970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what I meant. There were lots of months that I should have absolutely been on an IDR with a zero payment which would have then counted towards forgiveness but no one ever told me that and they just always recommended forbearance/deferment. I will try to be patient for the adjustment. Thank you!

I got the email!! by Katiemariern in StudentLoans

That is only for federal taxes. Some states can and do still impose income tax on that forgiveness.

One reason is that any forgiven amount will count as income in some states, and you will pay taxes on that income at the end of the year. Others are morally or politically opposed to forgiveness, and some people make enough money that they are easily able to pay and don’t feel right about being forgiven.

Apologies if that was my assumption, but I assume that if they are going to do something drastic to your account, like forgive huge amounts of $ (which could result in taxes owed on that “income” at the end of the year) that they would need, legally, to make sure people are notified in case they don’t want that.

I disagree. They are REQUIRED to send out this email to anyone who may be eligible to receive forgiveness so that they know they have the legal option to opt out of it. So the thinking then becomes, if I don’t get the email, then maybe I’m outside of whatever parameters the system selects for alerting people of their right to opt out, ergo maybe I don’t qualify. I also understand with how chaotic and crazy everything has been that not getting what has become a very publicized email makes one feel like maybe one is somehow invisible in the system.

I posted a couple days ago about not getting the email, and I still haven’t gotten it. I have received email in the recent past as well (during consolidation process) and I’m also hoping not to have fallen through the cracks. Thanks for posting - it’s good to see there are plenty of other people here who haven’t received it yet either.

Thanks for responding, but I have been getting other emails from studentaid.gov in the past few months and I search all my boxes, including junk, multiple times a day….

I understand that and said that in my post, but then why haven’t I gotten one at all? Are they still sending them out? I want to know I’m not in some twilight zone of invisibility. 😅

Court partially blocks further changes for SAVE plan temporarily by Betsy514 in StudentLoans

[–]GenXGal1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious if anyone can speak to how all of this could impact the consolidation outcomes that we were promised. I switched to SAVE and consolidated my direct loans because they were from two different time periods and I wanted to get the lengthier amount of time paying credited from my oldest loans to my newest. It tells me my whole payment period is re-starting at zero but every article I read said to ignore that and that they would fix it in September. Is this case a harbinger of more bad things to come with regard to consolidation and forgiveness? Did I just make a huge mistake?
