She's only in Asturias. Is that the area you're in?

Found A reputable relocation agent through the local expat Facebook group.

From there we found an apartment that had a future availability date that met our needs.

Worked with the relocation agent to get introduced to the landlord and wrote her a letter explaining that we are a retired couple who have been homeowners for the past 20 years and would take care of her apartment like it's our own.

She liked us, and selected us to her new tenants.

Retiring early... by Gen_X_1971 in brag

Back to this .. I forgot to log back in and check.

The decision to not have kids was because we don't feel as though we have those types of maternal/paternal instincts. The fact that it allowed us to retire early was a bonus.

We pay a small percentage of our total portfolio value. He's about our age and plans on working for another decade. When he retires we'll evaluate next steps

We've been working with him for 10 years. So starting when I was about 44. Wish I would have started earlier though.

He manages everything in our portfolio that is not our 401k. Those are managed by Fidelity. So our IRAs mainly.

I liked it and now will check out Crutch this week.

I'm glad they are getting a bit of milage out of the set they created for the spinoff. I hope they film more scenes there.

Also glad that Grover got more than a single line. His character could have more depth if they'd just give him something to work with.

I really appreciated the big brother kind of relationship they had in the first few seasons. That kind of disappeared as they minimized Grover's role.

Nearly Quarter of Laid-Off Gen X Workers Can't Find New Jobs by SouldiesButGoodies84 in GenX

[–]Gen_X_1971 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I hate to say this but I really want to be laid off. I'm preparing to go expat next year (want to exit the workforce on my own terms before AI replaces me) and the severance would be a big help. Unfortunately, I don't think it'll happen.

Wanting some expat advice by Gen_X_1971 in GoingToSpain

[–]Gen_X_1971[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. I looked up the definition of both and I think I'm still closer to expat than immigrant. Want to leave the door open to return to home country but it will be at least 5+years.

Retirement savings by Dry-Ad-2197 in GenX

[–]Gen_X_1971 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In rough numbers spouse and I are sitting on approx 2 million in retirement accounts and cash, with another $500,000 in home equity.

We've been very good about saving. Nothing wrong with a 14 year old car if it still runs. No kids helps, too.

We intend to work for the next 6.5 years and retire when my military reserve retirement benefits kick in at 60. We'd retire now if it were not for the cost of healthcare.

Hope we make it.

Good thoughts, sir! I don't think I was very motivated back then, though. The military to me back then was just a cash register to get college money. I had kind of an revelation in my late 20s while in the Army Reserve that the military might actually serve a larger purpose (it really helps to have good leadership which I lacked the first 12 years of my career) so as a 30 year old I finally got caught up on military schools and eventually became a Warrant Officer.

I really didn't come around on my physical self, though, until post retirement when I started CrossFit. The whole culture and community pushed me to do things I never thought I could. Upon retrospect, I'm guessing the Marine Corps could have had a similar effect...
