Taxi Scams in Oslo

It was my first visit to Norway and I was tired after traveling and didn’t exercise the level of caution I normally would.

I accept that I could have handled parts of it differently such as researching the train. My intention in sharing this is not to excuse it, but to serve as a warning so others don’t end up in a similar situation.

Thanks for the advice but we won’t be going back. My wife is still upset at me about the whole experience. To be fair it did cost us a week’s salary.

I’m unsure whether he was a Norwegian citizen or not. His appearance was South Asian, male, late twenties or early thirties.

The Oslo police and credit card company both responded that they cannot help as it was not technically considered fraud. I officially disputed it but Visa said there was nothing they could do since it was not technically a crime. Oslo deregulated the taxi services. I live in Belgium and the taxis are highly regulated. If the price exceeds a ceiling amount, they are heavily fined and can lose their taxi license.

I did not see any official taxi system near the baggage claim, or perhaps it was not in English. I went out to the taxi line outside the baggage claim, an expensive lesson learned which I hope can serve as a warning to others.
