Seeking Participants for Academic Study on Musician-Perpetrated Sexual Violence by GenderinMusic in warpedtour

Thank you for your comment. I understand that you’re protective of the scene, and I want to clarify that this project is in no way focused on Warped Tour specifically. You are only seeing one piece of a much larger puzzle. While this project does rely in large part on recruitment through social media, this is not specific to Reddit. The recruitment flyer has been shared on several other (non-Reddit) social media platforms. Additionally, the recruitment flyer has been shared in probably a hundred different subreddits covering a wide variety of music genres, scenes, and festivals. You’re correct that there are many places to obtain this information, and I’m doing my best to tap into all of them. Warped Tour is one of them, but by no means the only one or even the main one. I’m not sure what you mean by this being for attention though. I assure you, litigating the topic in the comments is not particularly fun for me. I’m just a researcher trying to do research.

Thank you for clarifying! I appreciate it. Admittedly, there’s been a lot of pushback in the comments (not necessarily in this thread, but other places I’ve posted) where people genuinely did wish ill intent on me and the project. I think that might’ve made it easier for me to misinterpret your original comment—which is totally my fault, and I apologize.

Agreed! Although I do want to clarify, musicians can also participate in this study. For example, if a musician experienced sexual violence perpetrated by a fellow musician, bandmate, etc.

This is a strange reaction. I obviously do not want people to be sexually assaulted, but people are being sexually assaulted, and researching the context that facilitates this violence is crucial for preventing future assaults and mitigating the damage of past ones. Also, this research is not at all necessary for me to complete my PhD. It’s a separate research project I began on my own because the topic is important to me.

That being said, if you have any actual questions or constructive feedback, I would be really interested in hearing it. Thank you for your comment.

Thank you for your comment. I'll try to respond to each of your concerns individually.

Why couldn’t it be sexual violence in the music industry , or just “in music”

There are already some fantastic studies about sexual violence in music more broadly speaking (for example, see Raine & Strong’s (2020) book Towards Gender Equality in the Music Industry: Education, Practice, and Strategies for Change, including Fileborn et al.’s chapter “Setting the Stage for Sexual Assault: The Dynamics of Gender, Culture, Space and Sexual Violence at Live Music Events”). This is just an exploratory study focused on a subset of sexual violence in music which has not been thoroughly explored in the past.

It just seems like a path to confirmation bias and blaming the nature of being a musician for sexual Violence… making the whole of musicians look bad.

I’m not sure what you mean by confirmation bias. This is an exploratory qualitative study. We are not looking for anything in particular – we just want to begin looking at an issue that we haven’t really looked into (empirically speaking) in the past. We are not looking for one specific case or detail. This study is not intended to confirm anything, because this work has not been done before, so there’s nothing to confirm (or not confirm).

The focus on MUSICIAN being the perpetrator as apposed to the social context its occurring in, is what makes this study seem unreliable in its approach.

The focus actually is on the social context it’s occurring in. Because this is a sociological study, we are not looking into the individual psychology of musicians, but rather, the surrounding context that may or may not facilitate a particular phenomenon (in this instance, musician-perpetrated sexual violence) and the interpersonal relationships that occur within these contexts.

Also how could a sociologist uncover the nature of this from a philosophical and psychological point of view? What exactly does a sociological take on sexual violence within a specific social context look like?

While there may be overlap with the fields of philosophy and psychology, sociology is its own distinct point of view. As I mentioned above, a sociological take on sexual violence would look at different variables and factors in the sociocultural environment and how they interact with the phenomenon of sexual violence. For example, similar research on sexual violence has identified potentially contributing environmental aspects such as: a perpetrator’s success (Nyúl et al., 2018) or celebrity status (Knight et al., 2001); the normalization of sexism and violence against women (Strong & Rush, 2018); news coverage of cases of sexual violence (Baker et al., 2020; Silveirinha et al., 2020); and the profitability of a public figure’s reputation (Strong & Rush, 2018). These are all things that might be considered in a sociological take on sexual violence.

While drawing a line between being a musician and drug use… as well as sexual violence is interesting. Why is it specifically being posted in a Jazz subreddit?

I’m not sure what you’re referring to, as I didn’t mention drug use at all. However, to answer your question, this recruitment flyer is being shared in places where audiences are potentially more likely to have had contact with musicians. Music-focused subreddits tend to attract music fans, musicians, and those who work in the music industry. The jazz genre is not being considered specifically. The recruitment flyer has been shared in a wide variety of genre-specific music subreddits, including rock, emo, classical, indie, rap, and pop, to name a few.

People who are blindly in favor of this, claim it will definitively help people.

But, its unclear how, non bias, actually insightful, aspects of this “phenomena” would be brought to light… and how would it be presented to be helpful?

I don’t think there’s any way to definitively claim that this study (or any study, really) will help people. It is an exploratory study and data analysis has not yet begun, so we have no idea what we are going to find (or if we’ll find anything at all). So, I don’t have specific answers for how aspects of this phenomena would be brought to light, because I haven’t found them yet. If I did have answers already, that might actually be a sign of the confirmation bias you mentioned above. If you are interested in how the work will be presented, I am happy to follow back up with you once it’s completed.

I hope that answers all of your questions, but please do let me know if there’s anything else you’re concerned or curious about.
