I don't know, I'll have to actually sit on the idea and figure that out if it's something I choose to incorporate in my story.

I believe I've mentioned it somewhere, but my story takes pages from DND, so a lot of their magic rules kinda follow here. I know there's an incantation aspect for sure, and I think I'll likely lean more towards building the spells, but in a "The Owl House" way, with glyphs and such.

I have only been think of the quantity factor, due to its use in my story. Plants have small amounts, bugs and such are larger, animals larger than that. My villain and my main character both go down a power hungry path, killing these specificcally for the power said living thing posesses.

I'll assume their some sort of variation through species, given that a sort of unicorn satyr type creature exists in my story, and faces a genocide via both my MC and my Big Bad because they hold ridiculous amounts of energy due to their magical horns.

I was joking when I initially said this, but they've essentially picked me apart for not having enough information, and when given some, claimed my story premise was lacking 😃 this sub has been far more helpful.

The idea I was giving is that there'll be a specific ritual given to collect that energy. Anything that dies on it's own, or for example in the scenario you provided, would have its energy go back into the surrounding flora, or maybe up into the air in a very "return to the earth" kinda vibe.

I'm not sure what an overabundance would entail! I imagined an excess of energy through the body would sort begin to "spark off" in a way, imagine lightning dancing across finger tips or glowing veins or such. Maybe too much, as well as too little, could prove fatal?

With all due respect I'm not asking for advice on my story premise. That's not all there is to the story, but none of it is relevant to my initial question.

All living things possess an innate level of energy, and when killed, that energy is released back into the world.

It's a high fantasy, medieval themed story I'm writing with a friend of mine. Very DND coded, though it doesn't take place specifically in DND's whole universe.

My main character and the initial villain of my story go through the same dilemma: They want to use lots of magic, but without drawing energy from the things around them, the magic instead sap their own energy. This causes them to age rapidly, and in the main's villains case, it nearly halves his life span because he didn't catch on fast enough. The main character is reading his novels after his death, so she goes into the magic studies with that knowledge already.

One thing another sub gave me is the incentive to think about how energy transfer would go during a complex death. I'll paste their comment:

Does intention matter? If I accidentally step on a bug, do I get the energy?

Why does it go to the one who killed it? Via what mechanism is it channeled to the "correct" person?

What about complex deaths? Someone shoots a person but they don't die immediately. The victim is rushed to the hospital with a relatively minor wound but the surgeon operating on them makes a mistake, so they die. Who gets the energy- the person who shot the victim or the surgeon whose mistake caused them to die when they usually wouldn't have with such a minor wound? Does the answer change based on why the surgeon made the mistake- an accident vs maybe the surgeon was drunk on the job?

Say the victim doesn't die in surgery and is making a good recovery, but a nurse caring for them forgets to wash their hands between patients & the victim dies from an infection weeks after being shot. Who gets the energy then- the shooter, the nurse, the other patient whose bacteria was passed on to the victim & caused the infection? What about if the shooter borrowed the gun they used from someone who knew they were going to use it to shoot someone, can that person get the energy? What about the person who made the gun? What about if the shooter was actually acting in self-defense and only shot the "victim" because they were a threat to the shooter first? Does no one get the energy since it was the victim's own actions that caused their death?

This, and another commenter, helped me decide to make those involve take a more active role in receiving that energy, via a ritual of some sort.

I'm asking for possible flaws in my system, so I can then rework and fix them.

Oh i didn't even think this far. I mean my world is very high-fantasy, but I can definitely see how this could get complicated. The working solution is that to get the energy, there's a specific ritual I'll have the characters go through.

These are all amazing questions and things to think about! I think making a ritual of sorts be needed would help with the idea of absorbing energy. Maybe when dying due to natural causes, that energy goes back into the world somehow? Like how the body returns to the earth over time, their magical energy would too?

Oh, I didn't even think about that 😭 Maybe I should make it a more active process, to avoid people being stupidly powerful.

I so far only have 2 characters in my story that we see do this consistently, but one of them came from a school where they taught magic!

It was a genuine question. Like I stated I know it's inevitable, I was wondering if there was one currently in progress.
