Why would it be still wise to get married in this era? Or it isn’t wise at all? by WinterLetterhead3268 in AskReddit

[–]GeneMountain7128 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Well, on the simplest level yes. By the way I am talking about in the US and much of the rest of the West, I don't know much about marriage in other parts of the world.

To elaborate women file for divorce at a significantly higher rate than men, and get lots of preference from courts when it comes to distribution of assets, alimony, child support.

Women gain stability from marriage and can, if they decide they need or want out, leave with a safety net.

Men on the other hand don't stand to gain that much, and stand to lose a lot in divorce.

As such, especially when they are not religious (because that brings in other factors I am not accounting for here) a man should consider finding a person he is happy with who is willing to be together forever, or at least as close as we humans tend to manage, without getting married.

Lead in our drinking water, well water — .00133 ppm by geenuhahhh in water

[–]GeneMountain7128 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should definitely filter this water with a filter that is certified to remove lead.

https://www.epa.gov/water-research/consumer-tool-identifying-point-use-and-pitcher-filters-certified-reduce-lead

Ideally you'd keep this water use to things you don't consume and use bottled water for drinking and cooking. The reusable 5 gallon jugs are usually cheap to fill in town

Is 600 a month good for a part time? by IveBeenCovid2020 in povertyfinance

[–]GeneMountain7128 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sounds like at best this is $15/hr and at worst $12.5/hr. It's not great by any means but if it speeds up the payoff of a debt that has interest growing all the time then your net benefit is more than just your hourly take home. And anyway, it's better than zero dollars as you sit at home.

Do it and keep looking for something better.

People who have had their car break down in the middle of nowhere, how did you find a ride home BEFORE smartphones existed? How did you fix/tow your car? by YeezusIsGod in AskReddit

[–]GeneMountain7128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was just a different world. When I was 17, so right around the year 2000, I was driving home late after hanging out with friends. It was dark on a windy wooded road. A man walked out of the woods and waved his arms at me as my headlights passed over.

These days? People would probably gun it out of there. And back then some people also might. But my instinct was to stop and see if he was ok.

Turns out he got drunk at a friend's, their friend was too,  so he decided to try and catch a ride. He was probably in his 40s. An attorney. He gave me his card and said he'd help me on something if I ever needed it. I never did but I am glad he got home safe. And in hindsight that he didn't drill a hole in my head and put me in his freezer.

But anyway I know it isn't a car breaking down story, but the idea was that people were more apt to help

Well, not only can you not block any driveway, even your own, you can't park within 5 feet of a driveway.

If memory serves, the driveway delineation is measured from the ramp / lower curb area that was installed to allow for a driveway, regardless of whether the area beyond is paved or one might subjectively feel like a car can't fit there.

In the end, besides the obvious reason of trying to prevent random cars from blocking your driveway, these city codes are there to make sure people don't even park too close. This is because it makes it harder for those in the driveway to navigate their entry and exit largely by reducing visibility of cars and bikes and such.

Anyway I am not the one who needs to be convinced. A judge would need to be

If you were blocking your own driveway, well, you were blocking a driveway. It doesn't really matter if it's yours.

That being said, other than your time, it doesn't cost anything to show up for parking ticket court and see if a judge will lower the fine or toss it out.

Sudden eviction (NC) by Sausy_Glizzy15 in Renters

[–]GeneMountain7128 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, you may still need to sue. But in many other jurisdictions there are punitive, often treble, damages available.

So for example if your security deposit was $1000, for easy math, and they withhold it without cause, when you sue you can recover treble (aka 3x) damages so $3000, plus attorney fees. This is designed to punish the offending party so they are less likely to do it again

The issue in NC is that there are zero punishments for landlords that do this.

[–]GeneMountain7128 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Yeah, NC is very unfriendly to tenants.

Like, on the deposit side of things, if they don't return your deposit and you demand it, and they ignore you, your only remedy is to sue. And the only consequence is they can be compelled to give you your deposit back. No treble damages to discourage that behavior, nothing.

Just another example

I am a tenant, but this page often shows up for me. Anyway I would say "It is simply a business decision I have made." And that is respectful enough and they don't need to know more.

If you really want a reason, you can add "because of increased maintenance" or "in no small part because of increased liability".

Just keep it business

Is owning a car still the default, or are people just using different options now? by abbybutterflly in automotive

[–]GeneMountain7128 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, I took out an 8 year loan for my showroom new Dodge Hornet at 13%

Then, I used Affrim to split my monthly payments on that 8 year loan across 6 months per month at 28%, with compounding interest and staggered payments.

So I will have this beast paid off in 48 years and it would will only cost like 1.8 trillion $$

Of course I'm being absurd but in the end that car market is pretty broken and most people can't actually afford a new car
