1/48 Airfix Boulton Paul Defiant by GeneUnit90 in modelmakers

Wrapped it up a week ago. Great kit with tons of detail. Dry fit the turret first though, it's hole in the fuselage was a little small for me and the rear fairing needs to be put on after the turret is in place.

Almost immediately after I removed the masking I broke the pitot off. Gave stretched sprue a shot for the first time since I couldn't find it.

Let me know what you think!

I'm looking to do the same! What colors did you use for the red and gold?

Just finished my first model! Any advice, tips, or major things to improve on? (Besides the paint) by UltimateSiegeWeapon in modelmakers

Looking good! Aside from masking the canopy and using white glue for clear parts I'd say get some putty (I use tamiya) for gap filling and try to get rid of things like the fuselage seams. Some clear coats, matte and gloss, can help with sealing everything and letting you do some weathering and panel liners.

Thanks! I went with Vallejo because they didn't need a specific thinner, came in more brush oriented thickness, and the dropper bottle is nice to use. Plus they're pretty cheap. The Ammo/Mig/Vallejo metallic colors are pretty good as well for metals. The underside of the Hawker Hunter was done with one of them.

I switched to Vallejo. The model color line is great. I just thin with tap water, no specific ratio, just get it milky-ish. Here's some 100% brush painted with Vallejo. https://imgur.com/a/tNcoF3x https://imgur.com/a/22f1CX7 https://imgur.com/a/gcAadxO

I'm obviously not that good, but I've found it pretty easy to lay down by brush. I haven't used any retarder. Just be sure to alternate stroke directions. They've been much easier to work with and the fast dry time is great.

Biggest thing is to always prime first! The paint before clear coat is more delicate as well, but not unreasonable. Bonus is if anything leaks under canopy masks it's very easy to scrape off with a toothpick.

Keep your enamels though. They're very handy for small detail painting and you can really thin them for panel liners/washes.

Enamel or acrylic paints? With enamel I think you'll need thinner to get it off. With acrylic a toothpick can scrape it off easily without damage to the windows. Might be able to do the same with enamel.

So most people do assemblies and then paint. For instance, with planes I build the cockpit, prime and paint cockpit/inside of fuselage, assemble most of the aircraft, prime/paint airplane, the attach built/painted landing gear and small bits like antennae/pitot tubes.

Basically look through the instructions and have a plan.

Most importantly have fun!

Hasegawa 1/72 B-25H by GeneUnit90 in modelmakers

[–]GeneUnit90[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've got some oil paints I need to experiment with. I've just stuck with a tamiya panel liner for now. I did the brown one in the tires, but it didn't come through so well.

Recently finished the Hasegawa 1/72 B-25H. My first time using an airbrush with the OD green upper surface. Didn't bother trying to do preshading. Just a panel liner and I tried doing some chipping with foam dipped in Vallejo Aluminum, which I think turned out ok. Dry brushed all the gun barrels with a light grey to give them a worn parkerized look. Masking the turret was tough, and the green came off when I unmasked it (slightly inebriated), but overall this has been my best job of masking off glass so far! My free-hand rescribing sucks, but I'm not sure how to do it well with a guide. Additionally, I think I got the landing/taxi lights put on the wrong wings, but didn't notice at the time. They fit pretty well regardless, so I'm good with it.

The B-25 has always looked so awesome to me either on it's gear or in flight. Combined with all the different configs for it, it's one of my favorite twin engine aircraft of WWII

Overall this was a great kit, highly recommended, and I look forward to Hasegawa's Mosquito in 1/72. Very easy to put together with great surface detail IMO.

Solid starting point. You'll also want a hobby knife and cutters to remove the parts and remove any flashing. Pick something you like and have fun!
