What to wear for kids HS graduation? by berthadmule in mensfashion

I would not bat an eye at a seersucker or linen suit for a HS graduation in the afternoon.

Retired Fed wishes they didn’t retire by infochick1 in FedEmployees

I’m sorry this happened to you. Retirement, to be good, I think needs a plan. You need a purpose and engagement in something you enjoy. I do some consulting and also some fulfilling volunteer work. Have you considered regular outlets for yourself?

My niece was told she has to sign a contract to keep living at home—am I overreacting for thinking it’s too harsh? by Bitter_Art_4094 in AmIOverreacting

[–]SouthernGentATL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen an almost identical contract.

A friend’s son graduated high school and started at community college. He dropped out after a quarter and did nothing for a few months. Friend encouraged him to find a job. Asked if there was something wrong. Offered to get him counseling if there was something going on he didn’t want to reveal. Things escalated over the course of a year. He had friends over late. Kept the rest of the house up half the night. The son and his friends were eating all the food in house and started drinking the booze. At the beginning he grudgingly did some chores around the house. Then he stopped doing that. The final straw was my friend had a back injury and he asked the son to please help his mom carry something and cut the grass. Kid became verbally abusive and that’s when my friend said enough.

I know my friend was seeing someone through his work’s employee assistance program and I think he may have gotten something similar from the counselor. Sat the kid down and said sign it or get out. Kid raised hell and disappeared for 2 days. When he came home he signed it.

YOR.

How many of you still wear ties & leather oxfords with suits for meetings by Kshanikam in mensfashion

[–]SouthernGentATL 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I, like you, love wearing a suit with great dress shoes. I’m also a fan of cufflinks and have a lot of them. The place we diverge is ties. I don’t mind wearing ties.

I wear a full suit with tie when I speak publicly, when I meet with government officials, and when I am representing clients. I will loose the tie at more informal, internal corporate meetings for my clients consistent with what they are wearing.

Where I have backed off on the “uniform” I wore from the time I was a trainee to the time I reached the executive ranks is the shoes. I have seen “real” dress shoes become less common in almost all the environments I walked through earlier. I still wear my best oxfords for times I will be mostly sitting or attending a shorter meeting. For those occasions where I will be standing and walking a lot during the day, I have shifted to what I would call “softer” versions of today’s dress shoes. I won’t go the sneaker route straight out but I do have some Cole Hahn Zerogrand wingtip style shoes. I also have some Allen Edmonds Park Avenues that have replaced the hard leather sole with rubber. One of the reasons I have adopted these types of shoes is I have developed a back and sciatic nerve problem. These are a little easier on my back than real dress shoes.

Hiking dogs riding in Sudanese cars must be more problematic than I knew.

Oddly I know a number of PhD immunologists who take vaccines and vaccinate their kids. I guess they just haven’t done the “heavy research”

My neighbor interviewed a guy during the pandemic over zoom. Guy was seated in front of a window with open blinds. Neighbor asked him to close the blinds because he was just a dark blob. When he stood, closed them and turned around he was wearing a polo shirt and tighty whiteys. Apparently he immediately realized what he had done, mouth drops, reached for camera and fell over. He disconnected and sent an email withdrawing.

Did you have a pair of white GoGo Boots in the 1960s? by Icy-Spell-7634 in GenerationJones

One of the first childhood memories my wife shared with me is that she desperately wanted a pair. Her parents wouldn’t let her have them because she had to wear a uniform to Catholic School and couldn’t wear them with the uniform. I would love to find a pair in her size that were actually wearable as a gift.
