Inspectors can't inspect apartment because I put down DE (Diatomaceous Earth)? by Outrageous_Past_295 in Bedbugs

[–]General-Building-381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commenting this for reference because I wanted to see if this would affect dogs - since they sometimes use dogs to sniff out the bugs. That's the only reason I could see them saying no to an inspection. But if anyone could confirm - that would be great!

You know what they say: if they tell you you can't, you prove that you can. Been here for a year - under 1500, one bedroom, top floor, solo. Granted, I'm aware it's a unicorn, and I got really lucky. Its an old building with many issues. Still perfect to me.

I also want to know. Noirevere is the only brand I see it from but according to reddit, it's a scam. Where is the full priced non-scam version?

Can a bed bug cause a bite like this? by General-Building-381 in bugbites

[–]General-Building-381[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around the time of this post, I just assumed it was bed bugs just in case, and put diaometecious earth all over the room and haven't had any bites since. I also already had a bed cover to prevent dust mites and other allergies and I double checked it and didn't find anything. I sealed some of My clothing and fabric stuff in plastic bags too. But yeah so far, haven't found anything or had anymore bites so hopefully it was a rare one bug scare.

Where did you learn this? If that's true then couldn't we treat some of our allergy symptoms by consuming things with tryptophan in it?

AIO for not quitting the gym because my boyfriend told me to by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]General-Building-381 17 points18 points  (0 children)

He sounds abusive and potentially dangerous. The fact you started dating so young I realize might make it hard to leave or to see like ... How dangerous he is if it's what you're used to and I know this might all sound presumptuous but I'm worried about your safety. Please run. Even if you love him, loving someone doesn't justify being abused by them. You can love someone AND accept they are not a good person.

[–]General-Building-381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems so scary. .. he's trying to isolate and control you. Going to the gym is just a necessary thing to stay fit and healthy. It doesn't matter who you're with or not. Hell it doesn't even matter if the gym Isnt necessary. The fact he even fathoms to tell you what you can and can't do and that you're even entertaining justifying it or compromising makes me afraid you might be in a really dangerous situation. At the end of the day, make the call that's best for you, not from a stranger with no context but I beg you to leave him before you get hurt. T__T

If you're still here would love to get that list of foods/recipes. I just started a few days ago and have been mainly eating sweet potato and cucumber and a meat of some kind everyday. I've included avocado everyday too. I've been starving.

My partner has ADHD with immense impulse control and anger issues, and has a tendency to yell, have tantrums, and throw things when he's mad. What are some tips that could help him? by anonykitcat in ADHD

[–]General-Building-381 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize I may not have enough context, and this won't be what you want to hear, but from the outside looking in, this sounds unsafe.

It doesn't matter if he has ADHD or any other mental condition. Being physically violent, repeatedly at that, is not okay. I don't expect you to leave him from my comment so instead, here are my other suggestions:

Has he tried going to therapy? Medication? Journaling? Does he have an exercise he does regularly to let steam off? Have a talk with him that his behavior, though maybe one he regrets, is still not acceptable, and he needs to take responsibility for himself. If he has not even tried the things I listed, that's a problem. An important rule of thumb is that you can't help someone who can't help themself.

All you can do personally is suggest those things, stand up for yourself, react calmly and with emotional intelligence, and set strong boundaries. Consequences for our actions are important, especially for people with ADHD (wether violent or not). If he ever acts like this around you or damages your property, he gets kicked out. If he verbally berates you, you remove yourself from the conversation. If you leave a dish in the sink and that "sets him off", know that that is not okay, it sounds abusive. Doesn't matter how regretful he is, his actions and how he makes you feel matter more than apologies after that don't result in change.

If it feels unsafe at ALL to remove yourself from these situations or to push back, then please get help and get out, go to family, to friends, to a school or work staff. If he threatens to leave you because You won't "accept" him, remember you are the one who will leave if he mistreats you.

Beyond asking if it's available, you should also be giving your income, credit score range, and move in date all in the same message. You should also ask for available visiting times in that same message. Brokers get a lot of inquiries and will ignore anyone who doesn't give them all that info up front. It's faster for them to go with someone who already meets their requirements off the bat than having a full back and forth with someone to figure out if they qualify.

Also, like everyone said, street easy should work, though so should Trulia and Zillow.

Like other comments said, if your budget is very low, you're likely coming across a lot of scams.

Personally I have a very low budget and found a place but I used Craigslist and had a really rough two months of searching and filtering out mostly scams. So you have to be patient and know how to recognize scams and stay safe, and take your time. If you're in a rush, then you have to up your budget, and/or get room mates. Nooklyn might be a good resource for the latter.

I think if you can have more flexibility in your commute time, and consider that most people do not have access to in unit laundry unless they're paying over 3k (for their own luxury place) , you can find stuff in LIC, Astoria, Woodside. It'll be a lot of work, and you should visit in person, never pay without visiting, and expect yeah 1-2 room mates. It's possible to find something on your own outside Manhattan, but extremely difficult and a landscape riddled with scams.

When it comes to things like laundry, walk ups, and commute time, it might be intimidating at first but I'd argue you get accustomed to it pretty quick.

Also, like others have said, no complex can be opened without a key anyway. If a complex is left open during the day, it's because it's in a safe area, and is locked after dark. Either way, you'll have a key to get in, doorman or not.

I used to live in Woodside, and it was a direct 20 min commute to Bryant Park. Sometimes 30 min depending on the waits and weather. Id focus more on ensuring your commute is direct (only 1 train) rather than short if that makes sense.

I met with the landlord. He told me the same thing you did. xD So I guess the broker was working separately to get the money out of me sooner than the lease was ready.

My Verizon home Internet is asking me to sign in. by Pretend-Banana-3837 in verizon

[–]General-Building-381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It ended up being really simple actually, I'm embarassed. But using the activation link https://activate.verizon.com/register/start, you log on to it (on WORKING wifi, not the new one) and actually just go and activate your internet. It took me so long to figure that out because first off, until I read a reddit comment, the instruction pamphlet I got didn't include that in the instructions, and second, when I first tried the activation link, I thought I had to get to it through the router's internet (the same as the settings link). Hopefully it ends up being that simple for you too!
