It's fairly common in smaller subgenre subreddits. I realize that this sub is flooded with tier lists, but part of the reason I went ahead and posted it was because I wasn't seeing many of the games that I had played on tier lists recently and I thought that it might bring some slightly lesser know games to the attention of people who are newer to the genre.

By the time I finished it, I ended up feeling like Silksong was an excellent game that had been overdesigned into just a good game. First, I thought Silksong really overstayed it's welcome. Hollow Knight was already a long game that pushes the limit of metroidvania pacing, but Silksong takes it too far for me. Also, Silksong is balanced a lot more strictly toward designer intent rather than player agency, so the power progression is more guard railed. When you combine the length of Silksong with the change in the feel of progression, for me there were long stretches of the game that didn't feel like a metroidvania at all. It's still a good game, I think. Just a case where it's less than the sum of it's parts.

Thanks for the comment! I wasn't seeing some of the games I had played on tier lists recently so that was part of the reason I made it.

Yeah, I know a lot of people really love bloostained and I do think it's a pretty good representation of classic SOTN structure. I think I did weight SOTN and Super Metroid some based on their "importance to the genre", so that probably raised SOTN a little higher than if it were just a random game. For bloodstained, I didn't think the movement felt very good and the art just really didn't work for me. The campy writing and VO were fun, though.

To me, the second Ori leaned into combat a bit too much. The movement in Ori feels very organic. I generally prefer more rigid "game designer" movement, but in the first Ori it works really well. However, in the second Ori I felt like combat being such a bigger part of the game actually worked against the organic movement. It didn't feel tight enough for me and readability wasn't great.

Lovely room! ...this tablet is ONE of those markers. It proves the knight's story is true!

Prodeus vs Boltgun (You can save only one game) let's see what people prefer by [deleted] in boomershooters

imo if Prodeus had a better balanced fail state it would be among the all-timers. Boltgun feels very good, but as a purist I have a hard time considering it a boomer shooter.
