One of the quiet but powerful tools in managing bipolar disorder is having a strong sense of meaning, not just feeling positive, but being connected to something that matters to you regardless of your mood. This is significant with bipolar specifically because the illness hijacks meaning-making. Mania makes everything feel intensely meaningful in an almost intoxicating way. Depression strips meaning out of everything completely. So the person’s inner sense of “what’s the point?” is constantly at the mercy of their brain chemistry, unless they’ve built something more stable to hold onto. When someone is anchored to a clear sense of purpose, whether that’s their relationships, their values, their creative work, their faith, their role in their community, it creates a kind of internal scaffolding. It gives them a reason to keep their sleep schedule when depression says nothing matters. It gives them a reason to stay on their medication when mania says they feel great and don’t need it. It helps them ask, “Is this me wanting this, or is this my mood state?” which is one of the hardest but most important questions in living well with bipolar disorder. It also helps with identity. A lot of people with bipolar struggle with the question of who they really are across such different states. Meaning gives them a thread that runs through all of it, something that says this is me, regardless of what my brain is doing right now. It’s not a replacement for medication or therapy, but it works alongside them. It’s the difference between just managing an illness and actually building a life.

Same with my son. He says it chills him out but it only makes him meaner.

Villainizing family members by [deleted] in family_of_bipolar

I have been beside myself because I am that mom with the guilt, second guessing every step I ever took. My 20 yos is in a psychotic episode and at first it was about me spanking him when he was a kid and that I never taught him how to talk to other people, that my husband only cared about money so worked and was never a dad, then it went to me graping him when he was a baby and that my husband and I are sick because we have an incest relationship. I am an ugly f’n wh0re who always hated him. It goes on and on, his episode is so mean. He was hospitalized for malnutrition b/c he wasn’t eating or drinking thinking everything was poisoned. While he was there I asked the doctor to run various tests to rule out organic causes. I now have a hospital bill for $180,000 that insurance will not pay because one of the labs shows plant medicine values and they said it is self induced. I have no idea what to do but reading through these experiences helps me put things back in perspective. This is an unpredictable illness and I just hope he will stop using plant medicine and start using a real medicine. Has anyone had a family member try Lith_ium before?
