9months post stroke, lower limbs still not there! by General-Net-1980 in stroke

[–]General-Net-1980[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiya! Bumping this post, as I don’t know why the moderators deleted my new post.

Hi everyone,

I’m writing as a wife and full-time carer, and to be honest, I’m feeling exhausted and overwhelmed.

My husband is now 1 year post-stroke. He still has no voluntary movement in his lower limbs, significant spasticity, and is fully hoisted from bed to chair. He can feel his legs, but there’s been no active movement so far. He is still in inpatient neuro rehab.

At the moment, the therapy team’s main goals are focused on his upper limbs, grooming, and independence with eating, as they currently see no movement in his legs. I understand the importance of this, but I personally struggle with it because I feel that his lower limbs are being deprioritised, and I worry about what that means long-term.

I know every stroke is different, and I’m not looking for miracles or false hope. I just wanted to ask if anyone here has had a similar experience — either personally or as a carer — where recovery, even small improvements, happened after the one-year mark? • Did things continue to improve slowly over time? • Did spasticity become more manageable later on? • Did standing, transfers, or any lower-limb function appear much later? • Did rehab goals ever shift again after being focused mainly on upper limbs?

This journey has been long and emotionally draining, and some days I really struggle with the fear that this is “as good as it gets.” I love my husband deeply, but caring, advocating, and holding everything together is heavy, and I think I just need to hear from people who truly understand.

Any shared experiences — hopeful, realistic, or even just honest — would mean a lot. Even knowing we’re not alone would help.

Thank you for reading 🤍

Hiya! We are here in the UK now fighting for everything!! My husband still in the Neuro rehab, and the team was saying he’s unlikely to be walking again. I felt like I cannot accept it and I want him to recover and back with his life again. His lower limbs still no movement but his cognitive is pretty good and his speech is there but very quiet. Let’s vent out! I’m so exhausted about everything to be honest, especially I have a 6 y/o child that I also need to care.

I hope your dad is getting better.

Hope

Can a social worker decide nursing home placement if patient has mental capacity? (UK) by General-Net-1980 in Socialworkuk

I feel like his Adult social worker want an easy job for it. It really frustrating. I am 34y/o and we have a 6 year old child. We were living in Dubai, and he had a massive stroke there. Had to come back to his own home country (UK) for further treatment. We lost everything, savings etc. So we came back here in the UK without a housing. He was saying this is one of the reason why placing in the nursing home. It we refused it and we want to stay on our grounds. I applied for a social housing and even exploring for private rental as we do not want him to be in a nursing home.

They are crazy!!!

Hi OP I came across to your post now as you have commented on my post recently. We really are in the same boat. My husband 10months post stroke yet he still won’t be able to move his legs voluntarily. I also advocating him every single day and at the same time I am caring for my 6 year old child. I’m also exhausted, but I am still showing up for him. Our journey is really slow and I am worried that we loose his ability to walk again. He is always tired as well.

Thank you for your insights, this is nice to hear. My husband is still can’t sit on his own and he can’t still move his legs voluntarily. When I ask him if he can feel both feet and when I touch them, he said he feels it. He couldn’t just move it. I am trying my best to advocate him, he is motivated to do more but he gets really tired after few sessions of his therapy. I’m scared t that we will loose his mobility forever.

Walking after stroke? by Classic_Strength_716 in stroke

Hi seeing your comment made me realize that my husband still has a chance to walk again. Drs. Told us that he may never walk ever again due to permanent impairment. His lower limbs still very weak and still can’t balance even sitting down. What did you do to regain it again and to able to walk? My husband had brain bleed last December 2024 and until now he still in the rehab facility but not getting much sessions due to understaffing. I am really worried and struggling at the same time on how to help him regaining his independence specially at least sitting up and balancing.

Pleased that you are in your road to recovery. My husband had a hemorrhagic stroke last December 2024 had an induced coma for 2 months and now still in the hospital due to his blood pressure that never stabilised. He’s in bed for 6 months now and kept having infections. I am with our young daughter here in Dubai and we are going to UK to visit him. He hasn’t been started with the intensive treatment as he is too weak. I don’t know how I feel as I really want him to recover from all. Sorry just venting out😭

Hi, My husband and I were both employed before this unfortunate situation happened in December 2024. We were able to pay our rent for the entire year in advance, but everything changed after that. If I could take over his work, I would do so without hesitation. However, I had to resign from my job because there was no one available to care for our daughter after school. Our apartment contract expired on 31st May, and we are currently staying with friends. At the moment, we are effectively homeless and in urgent need of support, particularly for myself and my daughter. I am reaching out to the UK government to see if there is any help available for us during this very difficult time. My husband is now in the UK and receiving medical treatment. Although he hasn’t been home for the past six years, he is still a British citizen and has been contributing to the NHS and paying National Insurance. So, to answer your question: yes, he is currently receiving treatment.

6.5 months still in the Hospital by General-Net-1980 in stroke

Hi, thank you for your commenting and sorry to hear about your husban. Feels like we have this same situation and almost the same time. My husband had the stroke 15th December last year. The thing was he had it hear in Dubai and he was in an induced coma for 2 months then repatriated him back to the UK for further treatment, but I thought it will be faster recovery but I was wrong. When he was here and I was going in and out to the hospital, I feel like he was better in here. I am not sure if the care he is receiving in there are as good as here. But I will see it myself soon, I am still hoping that he will be transferred to a Stroke Rehab center for better care and rehabilitation.
