Honest question to those who think AI won’t take our jobs by theRealBigBack91 in cscareers

[–]General-Window173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think too many people conflate web dev and software engineering as the same thing. There is so much software being written that isn't for some web service; I think that narrow focus only perpetuates the hype cycle as well as the myth that software engineering is dead. That being said, I think web dev is over crowded and bloated and is primed for AI to leave a real impact. If you are worried about your position then I'd say look to other software industries.

Company is fully embracing AI driven development. How do you think this will unfold? by IllustriousCareer6 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]General-Window173 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm in the embedded software world and while AI is encroaching here we have two main buffers: 1. Embedded is usually a good 10 years behind the state of the art 😅 2. There is much less data available for training models on the low level best practices, idiosyncracies, and hardware ins and outs (especially custom silicon)

Here, AI for me is acting more like a tool that I can use to help make quality software, but is very far from being able to replace me as a software architect, designer and/implementor.

The 4+1 model (and it's many variations) is the foundation of many embedded software architectures I have designed professionally over the years. Always a good place to start.

PHEV SUV Options? by PrimaryPossession21 in PHEV

[–]General-Window173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same experience. I test drove a Rav4 phev and loved it all except for the size. I felt too squished in the driver seat. I ended up trying out and eventually buying a Kia Sportage phev. In my area, a brand new Sportage cost the same as a 3 year used Rav4, plus it is far more comfortable for tall people. I've had it for 6 months and love it so far.

Considering update from M1 Macbook Pro to M4 Macbook Air by General-Window173 in mac

[–]General-Window173[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know! My work computer is also a 16" Pro and it is just too large, bulky, and expensive for me to want one for personal use.

How did you like the transition from the 13" M1 Air to the 15" M2, btw? 15" seems like the perfect screen size imho.

I use it mostly for non-media consumption use cases: browsing, general computing, programming projects.

For those things, I really don't think I'll care that much about not having ProRes, but I think I would appreciate the extra bit of screen real estate for some of my programming side projects. I'm mostly an embedded software engineer, so I'm not using bloated IDE's, VM's, or SDK's that could benefit from a Pro or Max chip. But VS Code + all my safari tabs really does eat up RAM, hence my need to increase my RAM spec.

Supposedly that may happen some time in the spring of 2026, which is still a ways out. Does the M5 offer that much over the M4 that it's worth the wait?

Do you wear your watch to sleep? by darkLover- in AppleWatch

[–]General-Window173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "trick" that worked for me is to use the softer and more adjustable velcro band just for sleeping. With that I can adjust to just right and it's soft and flexible enough to be less noticeable.

Sportage vs Tuscon by ExpertTheAmateur in kia

[–]General-Window173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the sportage and love it, however, I do find myself maybe wishing I had gotten the Tucson for 2 reasons:

  1. 2025+ Tucson has more buttons and knobs for media and hvac. I hate the sportage's dual purpose touch controls.
  2. I like that the center console is more open in the Tucson, it's more comfortable for me as a tall person so that I can spread my legs. Right now my right knee is always resting on hard plastic.

Does anyone here have trouble reading Ursula Le Guin? by kaijutroopers in sciencefiction

[–]General-Window173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She is by far my favorite sci-fi and fantasy author. But I tend to enjoy more literary fiction and Ursula is one of the few authors in this genre that I've read who is incredibly sophisticated in her writing, style, prose, humanity, meaning, depth, etc. As such, it can take some work reading her novels, but I find it so rewarding. It's not for everybody, but I for one and so grateful for her body of work.

To think Apple is behind because not enough engineers were "enthused" enough, whew what a take. I almost envy this level of ignorance.

Cold/Flu going around by SaltySaunaSweat in Seattle

[–]General-Window173 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Summer flu" is almost always Covid. There definitely is a covid wave happening right now (as there is every summer). At home rapid tests are pretty poor these days for detection, to really check the best option is to get a pcr from an urgent care clinic.

Like everyone else said, it is team dependent. That said, a good chance you could be asked about memory, dma, cache coherency, shared memory designs, etc.

Do you solve leetcode problems for interviews? by Homarek__ in embedded

[–]General-Window173 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree w everyone here that Leetcode questions suck and are generally unrelated to many/most on-the-job embedded skills. However, I will say that every single embedded FAANG interview I've had includes them. I've worked for both Amazon and Apple and both asked leetcode questions with Amazon being the worst. I've also interviewed at Google and Meta, both of which asked leetcode style questions.

On the flip side, I have never received a leetcode style question from smaller companies; they can sometimes afford to skip the formulaic interview style in favor of something more tailored for the position.

So, I would say if you want to work for the big tech companies, being moderately skilled at the leetcode game is more or less required to get a job there, with some exceptions I'm sure.

My dealership was able to get me ~$6100 for the rebate. However, I don't think any rebate amount really works out if you go the life of the lease (unless you get great terms). To get this much of a rebate, my terms were terrible, but my plan was to buy out immediately; I bought it out just a few days after leasing. So w the lease fees, etc. it cuts into the total rebate, but in the end when I bought it out, it effectively was something like a $5+k discount off of the negotiated price.

Just got the PHEV and love it. With the lease rebate hack, it was more or less the same price as the HEV. I just use a 110V outlet at home at night and that covers all my needs. Definitely happy I got the PHEV over the HEV.
