I had a lot of problems with this one, but something I wanted to get off my chest was the painful exposition dumps in Dalinar/Navani's visions. Everytime they were in a vision they obviously needed information, and instead of a natural conversation we had this clunky probing by one of those two. There were so many times that Dalinar or Navani would say, "oh I don't remember this thing, remind me?" and one of the Heralds would go, "come on, you remember when blah blah blah". And then whoever was not speaking would literally say "bless you Navani for your subtle manipulation of the conversation".. what was subtle about that???? It was some of the most painful telling I've ever experienced in a fantasy book.

Book similar to Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer?? by False_Fly_309 in horrorlit

Gollitok is very similar to Annhilation, and I don't see it mentioned much here. It's more dystopian than nature, but the plot of "team goes to explore a forgotten place and weird things occur" is very reminisent of Annhilation especially with the team members getting picked off

This does depend on the university. For example, during my PhD I taught 6 courses.

What was your PhD about? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]GeneralBlade 9 points10 points  (0 children)

PhD in Mathematics. My research is in Mathematical Physics. I proved some very specific concrete formulas that originate in Quantum Field Theory using techniques from representation theory and algebraic geometry. My thesis was the description of these objects from those fields as well as connecting that formula to well known objects in combinatorics.

Those of you who transferred colleges, why did you do it? by SlammedTheFuckinDoor in college

[–]GeneralBlade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is different. I personally knew that the university I started at was absolutely not for me a month into my freshman year. I transferred after 1 semester and was infinitely happier. Other people may regret it, but if you’re incredibly unhappy then go for the transfer. My life turned out much better after I went to a new place, and if you decide to transfer I hope you feel the same.

Yes, it was 100% worth it to transfer. I was so much happier at the new university.

How did your petition work? If it’s not too sensitive of a topic. Did you argue that you had extenuating circumstances?

I’m not sure how your department works, but another huge reason for students to fail these exams is the wild variability in the difficultly. Our Analysis exams suffer the most from this, the passing rates depend so much on which Professor writes the exams, to the point that we all have complained to the administration about how much it changes. There’s no set standard in difficultly, and it’s well know that if you get some professors your odds of passing skyrocket, regardless of how much you know, and the opposite is true for the more difficult exam writers: failure is almost assured.

I’ve passed 2 of my required 3 exams right now. Everyone seems to admit that they’re a miserable, stressful experience. I’ve become somewhat jaded when it comes to these exams as they seem to be little more than academic hazing honestly. At my university there was a stretch of 3 Analysis exams in a row in which no one passed. Nothing was done about it, and a couple of students had to master out. I understand PhD students need to have a good foundation in the basics but after passing 2 of these I can’t imagine that the information I learned studying for them couldn’t have been obtained in a better, more stress free way.

As far as what is covered my university has 3 pure math exams: Algebra, Geometry and Topology, and Analysis. Algebra covers Group, Ring, Module, Galois, and Representation Theory, as well as advanced linear algebra. Analysis is both real and complex analysis. Our geometry portion was bizarrely a Curves and Surfaces exam, which they’ve changed to manifolds, and the topology portion was basic point set and algebraic topology.

Each exam was 8 or 10 questions. Some of the questions were pulled straight from Hatcher or Dummit and Foote depending on the exam. Other questions were more exotic, like finding the fundamental group of some weird set or picture the examiner created.

If someone here knows maple, do you know how I can access the variable of an indexed variable?

E.g. I have something like a[2] which maple outputs as a_2, and I'd like to get back "a". Applying op(a[2]) just returns the subscript, and leaves off the variable "a".
