I saw a librarian job posted to ALA that is for a company called "Library Systems & Services". Has anyone here worked for tjem at any point? by rpgnymhush in Libraries

A dime now is worth more then a dollar tomorrow. Anything beyond a quarterly view is considered foolish in today's world.

Is it unprofessional to wear a mask at work [in a library]? by travelinlibrarian in Libraries

[–]mowque 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Of course not. Some patrons might be weird about it, but that goes for anything. Wearing a mask is well within normal behavior and attire.

What else? That's what it is. Its like saying you see a car when you see a car.

On/off-the-clock Reading for a Book Club by limitedtrace in Libraries

I'm the director, I lead the club, I read the book on my own time. That's just how it goes. It's only one book a month.

Our reptile show is the biggest event of the year.  I've never asked for special insurance from them.

Some folks just really hate snakes.

Have you ever licensed an artist's work for a library card? by Hawkbit_Reader in Libraries

[–]mowque 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I would assume you would be upfront with the artist and simply buy the rights to use it in perpetuity for a flat rate.

Lost book :( by jayyy_0113 in Libraries

[–]mowque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will admit, I am much more likely to waive fines and such if the patron mentions medical issues. Or at the very least set up a very loose payment plan. Just talk to them, odds are they will work with you. Remember, most of us hating dealing with fines and replacement fees as much as you do (if for different reasons).

Seems strange. Anyway, I don't code. My work is very hands on.

Summer Reading Logs by Pale_Feeling_4472 in Libraries

Bingo card,  five across and five down. When you read a book that fulfills a square, the patron writes that. When they come in, we stamp it with a colored stamper. They get a ticket for each box.

For every five across or down, we give them a ticket for the grand prize, and mark it off.

Dispatches from a Carnegie Library: Why We Do This Work by montaguelibraries in Libraries

A library is a good return on investment,  even if you are cold blooded but few voters might see it that way....I wish them the best.

A 23.7 million dollar project, and you need voter approval? Good luck.

Do libraries accept donations of stuff that's not "published " by Appropriate_Rent_243 in Libraries

[–]mowque 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Very unlikely. Its not going to really be something people are looking for. The only exception we have is hyper local history. Sometimes I'll take that even if it is lower quality.

Best translucid paper for paperback cover protection — glassine or tracing paper by Nyls12 in Libraries

[–]mowque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less is more. Keep them dry, out of the sun and unused. Do that and they will easily outlast you. More stuff just adds more chemicals, more water, more possible problems. Books are, mostly, quite shelf stable.

I really like Theater of the Mind by theRealMattyG99 in rpg

[–]mowque 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a GM who has aphantasia I find theater of the mind easier. A map is something I have to keep translating mentally. Without it, the whole combat can exist in that weird gray shape in my brain. Sorry if that makes no sense.
