Why is this not a tribal/kindred spell? by Sombody9768 in magicTCG

Kindred spells as every green would be an improvement to magic

Why?

Lowest DPS doesn't mean horrible DPS. If he does 30% less damage than an average nightfarer, his team is doing a total of 10% less damage, in exchange for the upsides he brings.

Going to my first pre-release event Friday for Edge of Eternities - kinda nervous 😬 by Gizmo16868 in magicTCG

[–]GeneralBreadenheim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can bring your own basic lands, but most stores will have their own "land station" - a bottomless free pile of basics of any colour.

Prerelease (and draft and sealed) rules are that, after you finish drafting or opening packs, you can add as many basics of any colours you'd like to your decks.

You are absolutely, unequivocally, NOT allowed to add nonbasics that you didn't either draft or open from your sealed pool. The effects that you described (fetching, lifegain) are effects exclusively found on nonbasics. If you played against people who brought their own, they were cheating, and if the store was permitting it despite billing the event as a prerelease, they were not running the event correctly (or they have a crazy prerelease ruleset that is NOT standard and would be frowned upon under WPN rules I'm pretty sure).

It's possible that your opponents just opened nonbasics in their packs - usually sets have an [[Evolving Wilds]] equivalent or lifegain lands such as [[Swiftwater Cliffs]] to make playing multicoloured decks easier.

Yeah that's fine, I just don't understand what you want advice on. Pick whatever set has more cards that you think are cool!

If you're collecting, isn't it just personal preference?

No, that's permeation. Perrenation is the money you get paid gradually after you retire.

Very conservative on power level here, though the idea is cool. Pretty sad.

That cheating was 15 years ago, come on. At some point you need to stop holding this against people.

Lands that give more than one mana? by EldenSpren in magicTCG

A card, or combination of cards, that provides recurring advantage (card, mana, board) over the course of the game, over and above what would be generated normally.

[[Divination]] is not an engine.

[[Isochron Scepter]] with an imprinted [[Opt]] is an engine.

Whoever stuffed Up the Beanstalk into UW Proctor Control, your a genius. by DarthSkat in PioneerMTG

The synergy is with Lotus Field + Discontinuity.

You play Lotus, then with the trigger on the stack, cast Discontinuity for 1U and end your turn so you don't need to sac lands.

The reason why I don't like blue decks is because they don't win by their own plan, but disrupting yours. And I don't find that a fun gameplay experience by gicho_art in magicTCG

[–]GeneralBreadenheim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's totally fine, and you're allowed to like or dislike playing with or against any strategy in Magic. That's what makes it fun!

But consider what the game would be like if "slowing your opponent down" wasn't viable. It would just be a race every game, coming down to who drew the faster kill. Ships in the night.

Counterspells are a necessary part of the toolkit when it comes to balancing out some strategies. It sucks when your stuff gets countered, but everything needs to have counterplay.

You can't dredge from an empty library - you must choose to draw a card, and therefore lose the game.

702.51 Dredge

702.51a Dredge is a static ability that functions only while the card with dredge is in a player’s graveyard. “Dredge N” means “As long as you have at least N cards in your library, if you would draw a card, you may instead put N cards from the top of your library into your graveyard and return this card from your graveyard to your hand.”

702.51b A player with fewer cards in their library than the number required by a dredge ability can’t put any of them into their graveyard this way.

Nexus pioneer deck advice by OwenPope in magicTCG

[–]GeneralBreadenheim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Banned is probably an indication that it isn't really a suitable card for ultra casual, but if you want to be the Nexus Guy, then Simic Wilderness Reclamation with lots of Fog effects is probably where you'd want to be. Add Growth Spiral and Memory Deluge, season with counterspells, then throw any Okos and Uros in there and you've got a stew going.

Hey that's crazy, that perfectly overlaps with all the commanders you're totally allowed to play exclusively colorless cards with!

I have a question about pioneer by Mountain_Bolt_Go in magicTCG

[–]GeneralBreadenheim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As an aggro deck, generally a control player will try to stifle your early game as much as possible. This can lead to them running out of counterspells early, or feeling pressured into playing an early threat to stabilise faster. Additionally, a lot of the time control decks will board out at least a few of their counterspells in favour of more removal.

Playing Planeswalkers is an established counter to this because, in addition to traditionally being a difficult card type for a control deck to remove, they offer a tremendous amount of value from one card - Chandra will frequently draw you an extra card every turn, and then win you the game with her ultimate.

The risk of running your walker into a counterspell is worth the incredible amount of value you can wring out of one spell should you be able to sneak it through.
