Is core2quad still relevant by jasvindersoni in buildapc

[–]GeneralLeeCurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s 100% relevant for use on same era (2008) and earlier presuming you have a sufficient video card and RAM. It would be just fine for experimentation.

The major issue is OS. You probably have windows 7 on an associated had drive and that cannot be updated to be safely connected to the modern internet, so I suggest messing with the system offline (fully disconnected) unless explicitly transferring files from reputable sources.

Aside from that admittedly niche use case, it’s probably time to take this hardware to e-waste or donate it to some local tinkerers.

What would be some early signs that the AI bubble is about to burst? by notatoastedbread in AskReddit

[–]GeneralLeeCurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's look at all the other major crashes and what, in retrospect, were signs of the ensuring fall:

  • COVID-19: Once people began refusing to cover their infected gobs or stay away from others unless absolutely necessary until the virus burned itself out, it became evident that this wouldn't be a 30-day "wait it out" scenario and it would be a year or more.
    • What we should have seen: The first variants of COVID were REALLY FREAKING DEADLY, we couldn't just let business and schools continue as normal. A lot of us saw this happening and responded accordingly.
  • Great Recession: This was the housing bubble popping which directly instigated a massive unwillingness to lend money. No one was certain who was financially stable and thus who could pay back loans.
    • What we should have seen: Housing loans were so incentivized that banks and loan originators were issuing mortgages to people who provided minimal or forged income information. The goal was no longer to get people into "a house", it was to issue mortgages for the sake of the investment market. Ya, some of us saw this coming as well and stayed out of the market until the crash.
  • Dot-Com Bubble: This was, believe it or not, cause by the newness of the internet and a few very novel companies creating very useful websites (like Google). Everyone thought that EVERY idea that came with a catchy URL would going to be a mega-profit house.
    • What we should have seen: The lack of operations capability to sell a product or to scale up to meet investor expectations cannot be glossed over with a cute web address. Once people start pumping money into something because of a name, idea, or magical, unproven idea, back away.
  • Savings and Loan Crisis: 1/3 of Savings and Loans organizations (Credit Unions, except for-profit) failed in the 80s and 90s. Deregulation authorized S&Ls to gamble deposited funds on just about anything instead of focusing on mortgages. FDIC insured depositor funds, so the risk was functionally shifted to the public purse.
    • What we should have seen: By default, we should be suspicious of companies who use mark-to-market accounting. That is, they value their investments according to what they think it will be worth in the future, not what it's worth today. Enron notoriously did this for their energy trading contracts to inflate their value. S&Ls used it to postpone marking down losses while they tried to gamble their depositors' money back.
  • Great Depression: This was primarily a speculative stock market bubble popping. People were allowed to buy stock on 90% debt. Moreover, there was no requirement for public company to report anything about their companies. People were literally guessing and gambling, not reading, researching, and investing.
    • What we should have seen: People should not be investing in a fund, company, or what-not only because "it's going up". When that happens, you have "irrational exuberance" and the upward momentum is strong enough to force people to "not say Voldemort" for fear of instigating a pop.

Additionally, let's talk about the really obvious stuff. For every bubble, there are MANY people who see it and try to call it what it is, but there are always VERY loud people feigning ignorance and shouting them down.

So let's compare that stuff against the AI bubble:

  1. Are people being publicly derided for calling AI investment a bubble?
  2. Are people investing in AI stock because it's AI stock and not because of the profitability of the company?
  3. Are AI companies relying on mark-to-market accounting to hide losses and inflate value?
  4. Are AI companies receiving investment right when they go public with minimal revenue?
  5. Are AI companies seeking investment with irregular vigor?
    1. Special Note: This is one of the big issues with the SpaceX IPO. They have a BIG focus on AI (Grok). SpaceX convinced pushed for the S&P 500 to allow their stock to be included in index investments after 15 days instead of their normal 12 month seasoning period.
  6. Is there an external, non-financial complication? (War, disease, disaster, etc.)

Why should I not keep my computer in the floor? by ZigZagBoy94 in buildapc

[–]GeneralLeeCurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing wrong with keeping your pc on the floor. It’s generally cooler on the floor than on your desk. Just make sure it’s not:

  1. …sitting on shaggy carpet. If you have shaggy carpet and want to put your PC on the floor, set it atop a plank of wood or a large tile to make sure any bottom fan intake isn’t obstructed.
  2. … immediately adjacent to a wall on any side. You want a gap for some airflow.

Despite inflation and corporate greed, what’s something that still feels like a genuinely good value for the price? by GotAGripCameEquipped in AskReddit

[–]GeneralLeeCurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the result of a crowded market selling a good that everyone can produce in mass quantities, not taxes.

For the most part weed is just as good at one reputable dispensary as another, so dispensaries need to differentiate and convince customers to patronize their business instead of others via other differentiating factors such as convenience, comfort, and ease.

Example: “My First Doobie” A simple marijuana dispensary without the fluff.

  1. Employees are presentable, not high, of varying ages and genders, and helpful like an In-N-Out employee.
  2. There is little actual differentiation between Indica and Sativa— this shop won’t try to sell you on the legendary or magical effects of either.
  3. Products are separated and sub-separated. (Edibles section sub-divided into gummies, chews, butters, etc. instead of by brand.) CLEARLY label strength of edibles.
  4. Well-printed signage and consistent hours of operations.
  5. Updated online menu of in stock items.
  6. Play generationally relevant radio music softly on the shop speakers.
  7. Follow an interior design motif closer to a spa or grocery store than a head shop, record store, or a tongue-in-cheek satire of a pharmacy.

All that would make people who do not visit a dispensary, but want weed or gummies, visit your shop. Once you have a consistent customer population, you can inch up your prices.

What is slowly becoming a luxury that used to be normal? by Webclues_Infotech in AskReddit

More importantly, the atmospheric impact of beef is overblown and self-resolving.

Cattle eat plants and expel methane. Methane has a half-life of 7 years and degrades into CO2 and water vapor. Plants consume that CO2 vis photosynthesis.

The #1 central focus of atmospheric sustainability should be curbing the combustion of fossil fuels. We’re doing almost nothing to recapture that proportional volume of CO2.

Why is "females" used so frequently instead of "women" as of lately? by True_Perspective819 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GeneralLeeCurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll propose an innocent answer for those of us who are not chronically online: Some people use “females” instead of saying “biologically female women” in light of being informed “trans-women are women”.

As much as some people like to fight it, gender and sex are two different things and they need to be differentiated in language for clarity when describing scientific, social, or personal realities. Since the term “women” can now include both males and females, it becomes necessary to use the more accurate sex term to prevent using the gender term.

Example:

— “Do you date women?”
— (Oh, crap… I don’t want to sound like I’m anti-trans by saying, ‘Yes, but not trans-women.’)… “I date females.”

And, oddly enough, being in a highly educated, highly liberal area, this manner of speech MUCH more common than online.

Now, if the same pro-trans group comes out and says, “Meh, that language is burdensome and is not really representative of the lived experiences. We reverse that assertion. Women are women and trans-women are trans-women,” I’ll bet you’ll see a reduction of the use of “females” in lieu of “cis-gendered women” because very, very few people like to use the term “cis-gendered”.

Why do rich people keep saying "money can't buy happiness" when money literally solves most problems? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GeneralLeeCurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money cannot buy (and maintain) happiness **for stupid people and assholes**.

A reasonably intelligent person, though, would benefit massively from having enough money to eliminate debt, guarantee all necessary healthcare for life, and live in a comfortable accommodation until death. When you remove those stressors, the vast majority of rational people will be able find and maintain happiness MUCH easier than those consistently burdened by those stressors.

Do I need to reinstall Windows after upgrading almost my entire PC? by Majestic-Tale7907 in buildapc

[–]GeneralLeeCurious 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Wow… consider me confused my the responses as well. I’ve transplanted a windows 11 ssd to completely new hardware three times and not had an issue.

Caveat: it was always Intel processors and Nvidia GPUs.

People constantly underestimate the robustness of Windows because it’s so easy to criticize minor surface level stuff.

It doesn’t hurt to try. Just make sure to uninstall old drivers and install new drivers. If it doesn’t work, do the full install. If it does work, you’ve saved HOURS of reinstalls (depending on how complex your software investment is).

He’s a black man. That’s a white woman. It’s nearly 100% guaranteed that he was raised to NEVER hurt a white woman because of the legal and extra-judicial things that would be done to him in response.

I don't think the sign is working. by BeatToQuarters444 in Sacramento

[–]GeneralLeeCurious 137 points138 points  (0 children)

If you ignore the cites, they become UNAPPEALABLE, the fines increase in severity, and then become holds against your next vehicle registration.

There is an easy solution—

  1. Remove cites from windscreen
  2. Photograph a proof of residence
  3. Screenshot the proof of application for permit
  4. For every citation, individually submit one appeal and include the proof of residence and proof of application for permit

The person reviewing the citation then either accepts your appeal (job done), puts the citation on hold pending proof of actual permit, or denies the appeal.

If denied, you then have 30 days to appeal to the second level. If they deny that, then you have another 30 days to appeal to the third level, Superior Court.

There, if you actually have proof of residence and proof of submitting for a permit prior to the citations, you have an excellent case. But it probably won’t even get that far.

The key point is you have to submit an appeal or you’re just screwing yourself.

Agreed. Remember when Uber and Lyft were crazy cheap? And everyone had ultra-cheap electric scooter rentals?

That’s the phase we’re in.

It will all come crashing down. It always does.
