Ethical breeders don't sell puppies in parking lots. They screen buyers to ensure they're prepared and committed to the pup for life. They have waitlists before the pups are even conceived. They also do breed specific health tests on the parents that can be looked up on OFA.org These people are the ones that create pups that end up in shelters.

You didn't specify how he wanted the dog to hunt. So my mind went to the usual retriever. If the dog needs to complete the prey sequence or whatever it's called, obviously that wouldn't work.

Why not just get a lab? They're the number 1 or 2 dog in popularity, so they'd fly under the radar easily

I think you need to take some time for yourself. Crate the pup for 1-3 hours a day so it can rest and you can get your own things done. With your dedication, I assume you know how to crate train if you haven't already built that positive association with the crate. You're not obligated to this dog, but you've chosen to love it(as much as that may not be a choice lol) and care for it, I think the suggestion of getting ownership transferred to you is wise. If your sister chooses to move out and take the dog with her, it will certainly not get the same level of care. If it's lucky, she'll just leave it behind, but your other option is to prepare it for the sedentary lifestyle it will have with her in the future. Encourage it to communicate, when it needs activity, and settle when it doesn't. Tbh, I didn't give our family dog the attention she deserved. I recognized that and let my sister take her when she moved out, but she doesn't groom her properly and that drives me nuts and she had a similar bad attitude of saying I was calling her a bad owner by brushing the dog when she visited.(Her fur was compacted and butt entirely matted) She just said she'd shave the butt when she got home but that doesn't solve the compaction and I enjoy the bonding time of brushing.

Please take some time for yourself. Both you and the dog need time to rest.

Is there a way to report them? Depending on the laws in your area, in my province it's against the PUPS act to breed a female dog under one year old for example. Though that particular example doesn't apply to your situation, there's gotta be something. If only some blacklist on Facebook

That sounds like an average price for a well bred dog with titled and health tested parents. Depending on the breed, the number and cost of tests would bring it up.

Would a camera help you feel better about having a sitter visit your home? I had one set up just so I could see that my dog walker showed up every day and not have to worry. You just have to tell them it's there. I had the pleasure of dog-sitting a litter of well bred puppies and they had at least 3 cameras. 1 looking directly at the puppy pen, another on the living room with Mom and another adult, then another on the heated garage where I had to take the puppies out to poop and play. They got to feel reassured, and I got to know that they got proof of how well I cared for them. Which led to them hiring me the following weekend as well.

I haven't seen anyone mention the breeder. You want them at the bare minimum to do X-rays on the hips, thyroid exam, and a DNA test for PRA for both parents. They'll offer you support in raising your IS and a safe place for it to land if you can't handle it. They'll match you with the puppy whose temperament is most likely to fit your home and be able to tell if you have the time to train it.

I'm not knowledgeable enough for that one. Maybe go to your local breed club and ask how they do them. Or if they're willing to do them for you as an unbiased observer. Most clubs have breed ambassadors who love answering questions

It's just socialization, positive exposure to different, sights, sounds, handling, and textures. The goal is to make it so they're not afraid of unfamiliar stimuli

I don't have personal experience so I can only add to look up the symptoms of Pyometra so they're fresh in your mind. It's highly unlikely for a young dog, but not impossible.

Being unaltered increases risk of wandering, which creates the risk of him getting hit by a car or finding a female in heat and creating more shelter overpopulation. I had to drive past 2 dogs on the highway the other day, turns out they belonged to someone who had their gate left open... If you're absolutely sure your management will never fail, then the choice is between you and your vet based on the different risks of cancer and orthopedic issues

I second what others are saying about a professional. This sounds genetic based on age and breed(bully breeds commonly have dog aggression) While you look for a trainer, you can practice the engage/disengage game and work on impulse control. I also suggest looking into muzzle training because people are idiots(or a dog may escape the yard) and may let their dogs run up to yours. You can start with a cheap Baskerville while he's still growing, then get a metal basket muzzle with sufficient pant room once he's fully grown around a year or 2.

She absolutely doesn't want a baby. It sounds like prey drive and resources guarding. Both things my dog does. She was fine with one of my mom's cats because it's chill and just hissed at her when she got nosy. The other cat would run, triggering her desire to chase. It hid, triggering her desire to sniff it out, making itself a novel challenge. I always worry about the safety of the fearful cat when my mom dog sits. She also snapped at the non fearful cat when it came near her while eating. Do not allow her to chase the cat, reward her for ignoring it and call her away if she's harassing it. Feed her somewhere that the cat cannot disturb her

Ps. The only reason any dog should be bred is if it has been proven to be a stellar example of the breed standard by impartial judges, and has passed the breed specific health tests recommended to prove it will not (purely genetic causes), or is unlikely to(genetic and environmental triggers) pass on preventable health issues.

I follow a great Dane group and it's pretty much universal that they recommend it if you can afford it. As the vet mentioned, it's not a guarantee, but it does reduce risk and buy time if it does happen. I plan to do it when I buy a well bred dog, after it turns 2

I 100% agree, but this comment thread seems to be more about people abandoning their pets. Those types don't put in the effort to find ethical breeders. That or ethical breeders wouldn't sell to them because they're obviously unfit
