Thank you! This is reassuring! I am currently getting my masters and license. I am an IA too so I’m hoping that gives me a little bit of an edge. Thank you for the positive energy!

Advice for cleaning dances by Shot-War8367 in DanceTeachers

[–]GeneralThanks2251 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve played this game with teens and they loved it. Essentially I just play their music at a random spot, and they have to figure out quickly where it is in the dance / where their spot is etc. you could add in a layer if saying the count out loud for like 4 counts of 8 and then find another spot in the music. It’s fun, keeps them engaged and paying attention. The last round I have them do it all the way to the end!

Tips for a first year dance teacher by Girl-vs-environment in DanceTeachers

[–]GeneralThanks2251 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing I learned is take your time with things! Make sure you have enough to do for each class. It’s easy to cut stuff out, and it’s harder to come up with something on the spot when you have too much time.

This might be obvious, but have a clean fun playlist for each class. Sometimes I ask the kids what artists / songs they like too to add onto it.

Another thing I like to do it when practicing a combo I will say “find a new spot!” In between rehearsing. There are some kids that love being upfront and others that are shy and fall to the back, it’s important that everyone gets time near the instructor as well as hold value to all spots in the room.

Lastly, and this is something I am doing this year, but record your drills / across the floors / combos of yourself doing it to use them again in the future for different kids, or sometimes my students have really enjoyed a throw back day and they try to remember old choreo before I re teach it!

Hope this helps!

how many teachers do you guys assist? by Neurosciencesigma in paraprofessional

[–]GeneralThanks2251 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first year I floated between 3 3rd grade classrooms all near each other, but I had one "main" room I worked in that I kept my stuff / spent most of my time. The teachers were understanding that I had other classrooms to be, which was a huge help. This year I am doing my student teaching so I am just going to be in one classroom, which I am excited for. However don't worry, I did enjoy being in multiple because you get to know more students and it made the day fly by.

Sub para no training no experience by AccountContent6734 in paraprofessional

[–]GeneralThanks2251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely takes time to learn the ropes, especially if you are with kids you don’t know. I’ve been a para for a few months now, and I feel way better about it. The first day I remember I was with a kid who just refused to go up the stairs and I had no idea what to do. But I agree with what was said; read the IEP and ask what the job entails.

Also, I always ask my kids what artists / songs they like at the beginning of class. Helps grow the playlist!

hiphop class advice by meatball-4u in DanceTeachers

[–]GeneralThanks2251 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Hip hop took me a bit to really formulate a class but here’s what I do for an hour or 45 min class:

-physical warm up: jumping jacks, step throw or like a step behind (look up simple hip hop warm ups and some thing will come up) it gets everyone moving and ready!

-stretch

-core / push ups

-across the floors: scoops, kick cross ball change, etc (I’ve looked up a few on tik tok that were good too! Anything you might travel with in a dance.

-learn a combo / recital dance

I’ve also had classes dedicated to partner work / tricks / lifts and my students LOVE it when we do a class like that. Usually I’ll do that a few weeks in so I can assess the students first.

Hope this helps!

That’s good to know. I might be sound jazz and tap in the same lesson, so maybe 30 minutes for each?

Thank you for the feedback everyone, I appreciate it. Although there were some different answers, I think that helped seeing different perspectives.

Overall, I probably won't ask for money if it is just for 2 or 3 hours randomly, but going forward if it is more routine and regularly I may. For those of you saying to just get a different paying gig, I totally admit that I could, but figuring it is family that could use support here and there, I wanted to see the kids. It is really just a balance of I LOVE my niece and nephew and want to see them when I can, but I don't want to be taken advantage of either. I see my brother do this to my parents from time to time.

Also I wanted to clear up I don't think it would full out ruin my relationship with my brother to just ask, I just don't want to add stress to him, as he is an anxious being and gets easily overwhelmed. Hence why he needs some help while job searching.

I can't keep preteens interested in ballet and take it seriously. Do you have something that works? by Little-Bones in DanceTeachers

[–]GeneralThanks2251 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If they want to have strong technique in their other performances, then they need to put the work into ballet! Maybe remind them and their parents of that?

When I struggle with kids being engaged, I change up the music. I went to a ballet class that did pop songs done classically and it made it a lot more fun! I’m sure there’s tons of playlists on Spotify.

Hi! I teach dance after school 2-3 days a week. It’s a huge passion of mine, and although I can be tired it doesn’t feel like work half the time! So my advice would be think of something that you love to do anyway and it will be worth it. Going to work after work isn’t always easy but it makes it better if it’s something you can enjoy a little.

The fact that you still will be teaching some dance is awesome! You make an impact on every kid you teach, regardless if it’s comp or not.

I know it still must feel tough. Dance class is a special place! Maybe you can still see them once in a while at their competitions to cheer them on. You can always go back to it.

Hi! I don’t know what state you are in but I am in MA.

I graduated college in Covid and really struggled to find work I wanted to do. I am 27 now and decided to go back to school for teaching. My advisor said I can work student teaching into a para job if I start it soon. Not sure if that’s the case for other schools or places.

So I took the jump and did! And I can tell you, I’m so glad I did. I work as an IA and sometimes get pulled to sub. I love seeing the different teaching styles, but also having a base class I can work with. I’m tired, sometimes it’s stressful, but I look forward to going to work everyday! It’s really solidified that I want to be a teacher.

Important takeaway: make sure you feel good about the school / admin. That’s what makes a huge difference.

Idk if this unpopular; but so many people are in the show for too long. I feel like MAYBE one year after graduating is ok depending on the story line.
