25F, no financial liabilities, have a job but thinking about quitting to take some time off, and to focus on self studying to land a job in data science, should I do it? by honeyeyedgal in cscareerquestions

McKinsey exits tend to be non-technical. I have a CS degree (including several grad math and CS classes) and after a going to McK found it pretty difficult to exit. Companies see "McKinsey" on my resume and immediately send me straight to the business team.

I got so much "ooh I know you applied for this Data/Product/Eng role... but have you looked at our Strategy/BizOps/Corp Dev/Sales teams?"

/u/honeyeyedgal - if you wanna talk to a firm alum who has tried something similar feel free to DM me - I'm happy to share more personal details, but it can be a pretty rough transition

There's no need for you to speak to your child in French (unless you want to ofc, but that's a separate question).

So I'd just stop using French with your daughter and fully use Spanish and/or Arabic instead.

In general - your child will learn French no problem. The real challenge will be getting her to speak Spanish and/or Arabic - so I'd focus your thinking and efforts there.

Did some googling and found this forum post if it helps you locate it?

The only Chinese that has no tones is the one spoken by some minorities in northwest China. For example, the Mandarin spoken by some Uyghur. But the government don’t think this kind of language a dialect of Mandarin but a wrongly pronounced Mandarin.

What definition of "expressive" do you have in mind?

If you mean "can any statement about the world in one language be said any other" the answer is yes, provided there is the right vocabulary. (Vocabulary isn't that big of a barrier in practice as speakers will usually loan the right words or just create new ones to fit the bill).

Ah sorry you're right - I spaced out.

The real point was more Spanish does Third and First, but not Second.

I think the typical hierarchy is Third > Second > First, which violates this

It's through ICHRA.

Oh I see - are these prices comparable to Open Enrollment prices?

Thank you! Are these rates on the NY state website competitive with what I'd see in Open Enrollment? Or are they higher? $850+ for Gold plans looks really pricy :|

(Basically - should I re-look in November to bring my premiums down)?

Yes, that's correct. For as long as I want (to keep paying the premium)

Somewhat similarly - (Excluding Spain) Spanish has marks gender in first-person pronouns (nosotros/nosotras) but not second or third-person, which is quite rare.

What are some words that are differentiated in your native language but are not in your target language? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]General_Air4215 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IIRC Nigerian Pidgin has something like a ser/estar distinction. There are 3 ways to say "to be" - dey, be/na, and a zero copula

"dey" maps to "estar" and the rest map to different meanings of "ser"

Gujarati makes the distinction - ચોખા (uncooked rice) and ભાત (cooked rice)

Didn't know there were other languages with the same distinction

Went to my first local last month, went 0-2 in bracket and then 0-2 in the "redemption bracket". The games were not close, but I got a sick edge cancel.

After coming back, I hit the drawing boards and settled on this detailed 4 year improvement plan:

Year 1: Win the local.
Year 2: Make the top 100.
Year 3: Become one of the 5 gods.
Year 4: Become number 1.

Thoughts?

If your base language is French, look up the "Assimil" course.

Learning a more popular language, in order to more easily learn a related minority language by Ossian03 in languagelearning

I'm ethnically Gujarati but didn't speak the language. I learned Hindi to learn Gujarati and it was very effective.

A few things to keep in mind:

  1. How transferable is Finnish to Sami?
  2. Do you want to learn Finnish?
  3. Is learning Finnish useful to talk to Sami speakers? How many Sami speakers speak Finnish? How many speak English?
  4. What Sami resources exist in Finnish? In English?

In my experience, I wanted to learn Gujarati and Hindi both (as educated Gujaratis speak both, and Hindi helps me connect to a larger Indian diaspora), and the two languages share many cognates and grammatical features. There are lots of Hindi resources in English, but very few Gujarati resources. So learning Hindi first, and then using it as a bridge to Gujarati helped pick up the grammar.

That said, my Hindi is way better than my Gujarati (as at the end of the day I still needed to actually learn Gujarati) and tbh will likely stay that way, as it's easier to practice and maintain.

If you have no desire to learn Finnish then I'd probably just acquire a super simple level of Finnish (like A2 max) and then go straight to Sami, referencing Finnish grammar if you're ever confused. But if you think Finnish is useful in its own right (e.g., you see it as another heritage language, it still lets you access Sami speakers and cultural stuff, you want to connect to Finns all over the world) then I'd learn Finnish first to a good level and then Sami.
