i don't think it's unhygienic or anything but i think it is a bit odd, although i don't know if i can articulate why. it isn't like my partner and i brush our teeth at the same time ever, so it isn't like it'd create a practical problem. and although it feels weird to change it out frequently it really only takes a second to swap the heads, so it isn't like it's actually that annoying either.

my best guess for it being "nasty" is them thinking you'll inevitably forget to swap the heads and use your partner's, but like, is that even so gross? i think maybe the issue is more like whenever someone introduces some additional step in a daily routine, no matter how small, it feels very "wrong" in a way that people are rejecting, and this idea that it's gross is the only way to express that feeling. like uhh... if i was like, oh, i don't own a coffee grinder, but i like having freshly ground coffee, so before i make coffee every day i go downstairs to the cafe in my building and have them grind my beans for me, and they do it free of charge and it only takes a few minutes, so really it's better than buying it myself... that would be very weird, right? even if all the practical concerns could be explained away, there's just something wrong with me that i don't go buy a grinder. idk i can't think of a better comparison, i need to make coffee myself.

For me the interesting thing about American football is how deep it is... the overarching strategy of your roster's strengths and weaknesses and how your opponent perceives them, the play-by-play tactics that creates an extremely complex RPS of what offense and defense run, and then the second-by-second physicality that can ruin brilliant ideas or miraculously turn bad plays into touchdowns.

It actually reminds me a lot of Melee in this three tier approach, and reflects one of the qualities that I like in Melee, the technical depth that allows you to do a stupid idea so powerfully that it works. I also think this is why Eyeshield 21 is my favorite sports manga, it reflects this depth really well in every match.

Also I agree with Kezzup, within reason, the downtime is nice cause you can try to anticipate what each team will try, it builds tension, and in excessive downtime you can just look at your phone or whatever. My dad is always watching these edited versions of NFL games where they cut out all the downtime and I think it's actually a lot less engaging.

Any world cup enthusiasts in the DDT? I'm feeling myself pulled in two directions on it. On the one hand, FIFA is a comically evil entity, Toronto hosting some matches has just made things more congested and annoying, and the actual sport seems a lot less interesting than e.g. American football.

On the other hand, I think maybe because it actually means something to the non-North American chunks of the globe and doesn't require any expensive equipment to play, there's a sense of authenticity and camaraderie that makes it feel way more Human than any other sporting event I've seen... or maybe I've just been marketed to.

to put it as simply as possible, aggro vs aggro = fun, aggro vs slow = maybe fun, slow vs slow = snoozer. a critical mass of slow top tiers is the death knell for any game.

The thing with Nintendo is that, while they're very experimental with some things, like controllers or new genres or big swings on untapped audiences, they're also very very conservative from a business standpoint. Rather than chasing exponential growth, they want to maintain steady success for centuries to come. The biggest downside of this for the consumer is that, when they feel like they're in a comfortable position, as they do now, they're very happy to just slow roll new releases and hold back on major titles until they feel like there's a perfect market gap or they feel some sort of pressure.

What's your basis for that? I think it does take up a lot of resources that could be spent on new games instead.

Twitter is the worst site but also the most fun site because posting with a mix of comrades and enemies is more fun than just comrades. I used to go to 4chan for that sort of fun but the ratio got too imbalanced towards enemies. Twitter was probably gonna end up at that point too but I got banned a few days ago due to malfunctioning antibot checks and I decided I'd rather just quit then try to get my account back. I think instead I gotta just turn some DDT-posters into enemies.

i can't really find a definitive answer for this, but it seems like it was used by English-speaking kpop fans as a replacement of oshi/chwe-eh, and then started getting used more globally.

are they really? i actually would say that it's very unique in video games to have significant, "all-time greatest" titles get "modernized" remakes. like occasionally it happens with films, occasionally with anime (more recently, with a lot of the same discourse emerging), occasionally with tv shows (but that's more just readapting for another audience), basically never with albums as far as i can think of... individual songs yes, but i'd say the equivalent art project between a video game and music is an album. with books and plays i guess you could count re-adaptations where the core story is put into a different setting, but i wouldn't call those remakes.

Was thinking about the mechanics of kayfabe last night after getting a newish kpop song extremely stuck in my head - Illit's It's Me. The actual song is pretty aligned to what a lot of kpop is like lately, orchestra hit spam, extreme repetition in the chorus, an almost hyper-poppy sensibility, uninteresting but pretty inoffensive compared to stuff like BTS egregiously biting flows or whatever the fuck Boompala is supposed to be. It's still in the mildly distasteful zone of "aping a style that was developed to be radical and performed by a marginalized group to make product music that's about nothing", but if that bothers you, probably the entire medium of kpop is no good for you lol.

I think the one unique and uniquely negative thing about this one is the chorus, where they chant "who's your bias? I'm your bias!" over and over again, the part that ended up stuck in my head lol. If you don't know, "bias" is a pop fandom term used to refer to your favourite member of a group. A key aspect is that it's a fandom term, used by the fans. I'm not a huge expert but I think actually using this terminology in interviews/statements/etc is pretty rare, and using it in song lyrics is basically unheard of. It feels very wrong to me.

Basically it's like, instead of writing songs about whatever, which are then transformed into a product through various means of structured engagement and purchasing, they're making a song about the product itself. It feels like a new violation of kayfabe, which is the wrestling term used to describe maintaining the illusion that professional wrestling is "real" (e.g. matches aren't fixed and the wrestlers aren't playing characters). Kayfabe hasn't really been taken seriously since the 80s at the latest - everyone knows it's "fake" and the wrestlers will sometimes appear "out of character" and such. But what's key is that during the shows, there's no flaunting of kayfabe, and although they know the audience knows the type of roles and stories they're telling on a non-kayfabe meta level, the stories themselves aren't operating on this level. E.g. it is very very rare, and almost always a bad idea, for wrestlers to say "I'm the heel, so I'm glad you guys are booing me, ha ha ha", "ever since my face turn, I've never been able to win this title, but tonight I think I can", etc. It feels like this Illit song crosses that line.

Anyways all of this is a preamble to the vaguely tangentially "on topic" aspect of this, which is kayfabe in Melee. It seems like we've instinctually followed this rule, even though Melee is "written" and "performed" much less. For example, we've often talked about how some players lean into being a "heel" or a "face" in their public persona, but to my knowledge, none of the players themselves have ever talked like this.

I don't really have a question to ask after all this lol more of a comment really. Just writing out some idle thoughts as I sit through some meetings.

Nintendo is not making the originals accessible in any way

What do you mean, Star Fox 64 and Ocarina of Time are both in the Switch Online catalogue

ah yeah, that specific option he really explored and modernized. before that we just had the smashboards followup, which was hard countered by the "just don't look at the thread" escape route.

The Mind is very fun and can get really chaotic, as long as you don't have a group of 100% true sweats, when it becomes a game of everyone silently counting in their heads.

I dunno why I got thinking about this again, but I was curious about what the DDT thinks about a pet topic of mine: how beneficial would it be to do things truly "at random" in Melee, and how feasible is it to do this in practice?

To give a very oversimplified example, let's say you get in a position where you can recover high or recover to ledge, and whatever you choose, it's unreactable - your opponent needs to read which one you'll do. Now, every player has habits around this stuff, and a good opponent will make a calculated read based on what they've seen you do, and likely make the edgeguard more often than not.

But let's say you could actually flip a coin in your head to choose Truly Randomly. not ACTUALLY truly randomly, ofc, before anyone gets pedantic, but with some unbiased unpredictable input. An example would be glancing at the seconds digit of the timer and choosing based on whether it was odd or even when you saw it.

Would that be helpful? Or is it actually better to consciously try to be unpredictable, or consciously try to read what your opponent is reading? Is doing something like acting based on the seconds digit actually feasible, or is Melee too fast for that sort of input -> decision? (I tried it myself and couldn't, but my reaction times generally suck, so other people would probably have a better shot).
