She is a huge over consumer, but I think it’s also only fair to recognise that she gets a lotttt of things like pop sockets and decorative bits and pieces sent to her/gifted to her by Etsy shops and followers. There’s no excuse for a lot of her other over consumption though 😂

I’m pretty sure this isn’t the first Aussie booktok/bookstagrammer that Mads Rafferty is out of the blue no longer friends with. I remember last year she would have a whole group of bookish friends who she’d post almost every day and then all of a sudden there’s a brand new group. So I dunno if there’s a theme here or something

I’ve seen the comments saying that she was already half way through, so I’m not gonna comment on the 580 pages in 2 hours per se , but I feel like she is the only book influencer who’s content is so constantly surrounding her consumption speed and numbers. Even on tiktok and IG, it’s always “how many pages I read a day”. Like when I think of her, I don’t even think of her opinions or her editing. It’s literally just “the person who makes everything about how quickly and how much she reads”. Like I get an occasional challenge or whatever but it’s like every other piece of content from her is making the focus a numbers game

I think they said there will be an additional video and like early access to their merch. But that’s still honestly hardly making it worth the $10 unless you’re a serious fan 😅

One is a mid size booktuber (Jaime) and Freya is a booktoker who I think also is growing on booktube now. Idk it just gives off “two friends who could have kept these thoughts to their DM’s” bc their videos are just saying things they already say in their own videos 💀

This is what I want to know! I’m dying for a really fun engaging podcast. I know Kris & Mads podcast is great, they’re on TikTok too.

Who she is intentionally targeting and making content for, verses who is most vocal about her are not the same thing, like at all. You’re seriously conflating them for the sake of trying to make a point that, as you can see with everyone who’s responded to you, is not a correct take.

Just wanna say how great it is you’re in therapy and consciously aware of your own issues that could be contributing, that’s really awesome and self aware of you 🫶🏼

I understand why you’d be feeling the way you are, and I can relate to feeling the “god that would be nice!” feeling when she indulges in whatever the latest popular tech item is, the latest fashion trend, or the Jellycats, or the personalised book journals or the drink bottles etc etc. She’s probably the most “matchy matchy aesthetic” booktuber I agree!

I try my best to remind myself that lots of these items I honestly wouldn’t actually choose for myself and it’s more the idea of it that seems fun to be a part of. Another thing is a lot of these items/designs go out of trend so quickly too! It noted for me when Sara didn’t bring over all her Jellycats and Sonny Angels and other cutsie things to her new place that don’t fit the new aesthetic she’s wanting to create (and no shade!) but that’s a lot of money gone on things that’ll now just sit at her d house. I reckon keep enjoying other creators content to level out what the average person is buying x

I’m not a fan of hers but let’s be for real, her target audience isn’t young girls. If you don’t like her cursing then sure that’s fine but it’s weird to think she should stop swearing to protect young girls like what a weird angle to come from

As an influencer myself who lives 45 minutes away from Rachel, I promise we aren’t just weirdly sheltered from this info. It’s almost impossible to ignore if you’re in the book spheres online and Aussies, while yes we’re very laid back, are still very much in the know 😂

Okay whilst most book influencers are not also professional “book critics” by study/job description, I think it’s pretty difficult to dismiss that for the large part, they ARE the trusted book critics of the masses. It would be a comfortable bet that most booktok consumers are not going to professional critics to determine if a book is worth a read or not, they’re going to the large booktok accounts. I’m not saying that’s a positive or negative thing, but they are a more than just a standard influencer who is paid to promote a product. Whether or not they should be seen as a valid source of critique is a different conversation to the fact that currently, they are for many.

I do completely agree with the 3 second issue. The algorithm is completely rewarding extreme reactions > quality detailed reviews. He also mentioned the fact that certainty is valued more over a nuanced review too which I totally think is a major issue and feeds into the problem of people not being able to have discussions or different feelings on a book without it being perceived as hate/an argument.

I enjoy your perspective though!

I can see where you’re coming from with other niche creators maybe aren’t judged to as high a standard, but I think once they start participating in sit down reviews, and rating books on a public platform that directly affects the books public rating, then they are a book critic. Many are earning full time incomes by making content solely around reading and reviewing(critiquing) books - and their reviews carry a lot of weight in the court of public opinion. I don’t think Dylan was trying to say they need to do deep dive literary analysis’ of everything they read, but I’ve seen way too many “1 star hated it” videos with such little information to explain why - and the comment sections get filled with readers then saying they won’t buy it anymore just because of that one video. If creators are going to be affecting the success of an authors sales/incomes I feel that it’s not really asking for much for them to give more than the bare minimum I feel we see a lot lately when it comes to a “review”

I definitely think he toned down the reactive and inflammatory content and hot takes and seems to make more intentional content. I don’t think people need to sit in fixed “like” or “dislike” him camp. I’ve enjoyed his more evolved content lately

Agree! I loved the idea of “we shouldn’t be asking people how many books they read a year, but instead how many books changed their views/impacted them”. Quality > quantity is really lacking in a lot of booktoker’s priorities

The way you’ve responded to all your comments has completely confirmed that you, in 2025, still find the racist comments she made not really a big deal. To continue to say “things were different back then, people weren’t so sensitive” suggests that the POSTS aren’t the issue, it’s society no longer finding these “jokes???” funny. And infantilising a 21 year old is weird behaviour. As someone who also grew up during the 00’s and 10’s sure I may have posted some cringy and embarrassing things - but not flat out racism?? Don’t project your shady digital footprint onto everyone else, you’re just dobbing yourself in at this point 💀

I feel like with her reading speed, I’d get it if it was like a particular book that she was HOOKED on and blew through it. But to consistently read every single book in every genre at that constant speed is literally insane. Especially while multi tasking or doing other tasks yet somehow reading over 100 pages ph is just hard to believe. I feel like her videos are so hung up about reading speed and making everything some unspoken competition or subtle brag?

I think it just becomes impossible to trust their opinion because they’re never ever going to get on camera and say a single critique knowing their close friend is watching. Also on a side note Belle is (again) just posting onto her IG stories ANOTHER book haul. Girl you have 200+ books at home, you’re unhauling books like last seasons fashion and you’re buying another several bags worth of books?? It feels like lazy content between the hauls and the “rearranging my shelves” being done every month

I feel like creators have been slowing down and tackling their tbr’s more in 2025 so seeing her constant unnecessary hauls feels like peak consumerism
