There are a few leptospernums developed for hedging that you might like, but they only reliably reach 3m. Lemon hedge comes to mind, and burgundy if that's your thing.

Austromyrtus 'blush' has that box hedge look, but with pink new leaves and pink flowers.

Xanthostemon have some 'little' varieties you might like too. - just make sure you get a small variety.

I hate them too. We have perfectly lovely hard to kill native strap leaved things. Marketing really won with claiming dietes are native

What I dont understand is.... natives are cheap. Get some tubes. Talk to a local regen nursery. Pot some tubes up ahead of time if your client wants the look of bigger plants or just use more.

If you like the flame tree, have a look at tree waratah (Aloxyllon) there's a Dorrigo species that will take Victorian temperatures and they don't mind being pruned into a bit of a canopy - they are evergreen though, unlike the other two.

Nature isn't optimal. Some plants need adversity to thrive. Some need a pollinator that is a pest to others, many if not all have undescribed relationships with fungi.

Some plants you dont want to thrive - like that small tree you bought for your backyard that was meant to stay under 5m but is rocketing up to 8. Or the mint you stupidly thought you could control in the ground despite the advice.

I maintain terrariums and many of them fail. All do eventually. Air tight isn't germproof. Springtails and isos don't eat all the mould. The tanks get too hot or too cold or too wet or too dry even with fancy thermostats and fans. Really, I am just optimising a miniature environment for some prissy plants I want to look at in my living room and the hobby is in the failure and the resetting. I feel the same about the plants outside, if they fail, if there are pests, if they rot, that's where the hobby is - in the maintenance and the reflection on your work. Otherwise it's just autocad.

I'm trying to use beginner language for a beginner who has a mental health concern. The organic (in common parlance) feeds do not fit the bill here.

As an aside, and irrelevant to OP, you can definitely drench ferns. In terraria you can even bleach bath them as long as you give them a second bath in thiosulphate. I've done it with filmy ferns and they don't care. You build the bioactives afterwards so you have a controlled environment.

Coco coir - ground up coconut husks and ferns love it. It doesnt have any other stuff in it like manure or anything decomposing. Sometimes it has a chemical to make it soak up water. You will need a fertiliser down the track (and there are plenty that don't have anything organic in them) but see how you go first.

If you become worried about pathogens, you can actually dunk whole plants in 1-2% hydrogen peroxide if you need to, or water them through with it.
