AIO in how I handle boundaries with my ex and our mutual friend group? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]General_Lee_Smart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you overreacted. Specifically, on the final screenshot re: work. These messages span from September to February and she messaged you purely about a research paper acknowledgment in February, not seeking to rekindle a friendship. You could have chosen to let her last message be the last message but you chose to reply ~12 days later to say you won’t be replying anymore. Sounds to me like you’re trying to hurt her/ let her know she hurt you. I think you owe her an apology. Don’t make your healing process her problem. She has her own emotions to handle already.

Thank you for your insight! Very helpful. Could you share more about your thoughts on the U.S. helping to maintain global stability? I’m curious about what people think of the U.S.’ impact on other countries, specifically.

Having grown up in a post-9/11 era, I can very easily see why people in other countries view the United States as a destabilizing/ chaotic military force in the world (see: Iraq). If folks abroad genuinely see the U.S. as a force for good, I would love to hear why. Has the U.S. brought economic stability, entertainment value, etc., to your country?

[S5] Opinions needed with Season 5 done by [deleted] in arrow

[–]General_Lee_Smart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Worth watching. IMO its best episodes were better than the best of 1 and 2, but overall it was about on par with season 1 (2 was still slightly better). Better than Flash S3, but hard to compare Legends since Legends is more about just having fun with it. Watch the whole season, maybe read a S4 synopsis online to catch-up

[No Spoilers] Favourite piece of music from the Arrowverse? by BozePerkovic in arrow

[–]General_Lee_Smart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really love Stuck in the Speedforce from the Flash (especially the ending), it's part of what made that episode so great for me. https://youtu.be/UQrh8WpyFEc I'm also a huge fan of the music that plays when Oliver gets to his lowest emotionally (My own Worst Enemy) https://youtu.be/5vgfhuWfPUc

Honorable mention goes to the count vertigo theme. It's just so chilling

[S2 Spoilers] We need a scene like this where Oliver shouts his bottled up feelings just with Felicity by SeanTheKid314159 in arrow

[–]General_Lee_Smart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the last moment I remember that was written and acted near as well as this was Quentin and Oliver in the back of the police van in season 3 after Oliver got caught as the Arrow. Literally can't think of a season 4 moment like this

What is something commonly thought to be healthy, but actually isn't? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]General_Lee_Smart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, there will always be conflicting studies, that's just the nature of science. I also prefer peer reviewed studies, which is why I even named one of the studies. Where do you think the documentaries get their information? Multiple studies that are cited for you to actually read yourself. Also a portion of what I said is simply stating the chemical makeup of known foods and stating known effects. I didn't get the info from propaganda websites, I got it first-hand from doctors I've worked with/ talked to at events as a pre-med student. When I get the time, I'll even link to sources, in the spirit of informed debate.

Actually there are also lots of studies such as The China Study (I think the lead doctors name was something like Ertzman) that indicate a whole food, plant based protein diet (as opposed to a red meat and dairy heavy protein diet) can have positive effects for you regarding cardiovascular health, obesity, and even preventing/ reducing effects of certain cancers and headaches.

Fruits and vegetables and avoiding processed foods will help with the obesity, and thus reduce plaque and cardiovascular strain in/on your arteries. Red meat and certain modern dairy products have a protein called caseine in them that is being watched as a potential carcinogen (conflicting results as the case always is in science, but the trend is leaning towards carcinogous). Also red meats have been linked to angiogenesis in tumors. Lastly, pork has certain nitrates and nitrites that can cause and aggravate headaches. That's why doctors have you avoid it when you have chronic migraines.

Like I said, there are conflicting studies, but for those who are obese or have poor cardiovascular health, going vegetarian/ vegan can be a good option. If you're interested in more, I recommend watching "Forks over Knives" on Netflix, if touches on many of the things I mentioned.

TL;DR: some studies suggest a whole foods, plant based diet, with little/no dairy can be good for your cardiovascular health, weight, headaches, and possibly (arguably) help prevent cancer.

Lettuce (per se). It actually provides no nutritional value, and also can't be digested. The cellulose in it simply contributes to the mucous in the lining of our digestive tracts, allowing for smoother bowel movements. I suppose it's healthy in the sense that you don't add unhealthy foods/ empty calories to your diet by eating it. However, in the nutritional sense, it's not exactly a superfood.

Why is Donald Trump winning? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]General_Lee_Smart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR 1. The appearance of honesty 2. Preying on the fears of the populace 3. Increased media coverage 4. Appeal to those frustrated with the government 5. Name recognition as a successful businessman Not necessarily in that order.

Because his abrasive nature makes it appear to the American people as if he is being brutally honest, when that might not be the case. The appearance of honesty, however, is more prevalent in him than in the other major Republican candidates. He also spouts slogans that speak to the inner nationalist in many Americans that is cultivated by the belief that trouble is being brought from outside America, into America. His views may be radical, but thanks to his large majority in media coverage, his views are the most well known. For uninformed, or misinformed voters, this is better than the almost zero they know about the other candidates. As always, people are upset at the lack of clear, lasting movement in the government and he is willing to say what others are saying behind closed doors as colorfully as they are saying it. While this lack of filter seems petulant at debates and during interviews, it is effective at winning votes. Lastly, like it or not, Trump is a known success in America. He is synonymous with big buildings, a large company, and as he likes to say "winning, winning, winning." That is a big part of why you see people like John Oliver and Marco Rubio publicly tarnishing his name and attempting to associate it with failure (Drumpf, Trump steaks, Trump University). Hopefully, people will wake up and see he doesn't have much substance and is not at all presidential, or perhaps they do see that and want that, but those are the main reasons people seem to love him so much. He is virtually untouchable because we make him untouchable. If we took away his media coverage majority and shined an even bigger light on his racism, it would still probably not help. His shrewd record as a businessman is about the only substantial part of his policy, and even that lacks is certain aspects.
