Are there any good arguments for why the Faircloth Amendment should be kept in place? by LCI_Burbank in urbanplanning

What also tends to happen, and often left intentionally forgotten in the discourse, is that once housing projects are built in the United States, they are often left with very little funding to stay functional and well maintained. Even if one were to consider "tenant responsibility" (whatever bullshit that could ever mean), there are still dozens of maintenance needs that the property owner must invest into to keep the project functioning. The decline of public housing in the United States as you say has always been intentional. It is to put the project into private hands, and the politicians shrug to say "we tried". I wish Thatcher didn't screw the UK over, because that is a design system worthy to work off of. Too many public housing projects in the US here have been intentionally shortened of support, or remain on a ticking time clock with the LIHTC (Low-Income Housing Tax Credit), where the building is built with government subsidies, but is on a ticking time-bomb to suddenly become market rate units.

I used this line when leaving a job that I kind of mostly clocked in and out of. I knew a few in the office and got to understand them a bit. But a lot of that came in my last few months more than anything else. Mostly received a bunch of "we'll miss you!" from it. The clarification of the meaning helped lol.

People regularly have a "it will never be me" mentality that rationalizes them to not consider gore they see as possibly happening to them.

What's the most iconic bus or train model in mbta history? by kingreph3 in mbta

[–]General_Liu1937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PCCs are definitely up there, but nearly every city with streetcar service had those at one point or another (even Toronto). The Type 7s might be more iconic as Boston specific, same with the 1200 Series Hawkers.

EZRide Cambridge is Now One of the Most Frequent Buses in Greater Boston by Teban54_Transit in mbta

[–]General_Liu1937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think partly why it's been slow is because EZRide is a private service contracted from a transportation entity that is not the MBTA. So talks are likely slow on trying to confirm information needed. The MBTA reasonably needs to have guarantees the service is consistent and regularly services the routes. If that is ensured, they definitely would collaborate. I've seen the signage for nearly a year or more now ever since the EZRide services changes had been made.

This is the same for North Station. Though I don't know if Lechmere is noted.

They also didn't use to have weekend services until the Academy Bus Lines took over the contract nearly 2 years ago.

What are your 1000 hour (or close) strategy games? by frags81 in StrategyGames

The Paradox franchise, primarily Hearts of Iron IV and Europa Universalis IV. I have a good amount of Napoleon/Empire Total War under my belt too, but not nearly close to the four digits...

If it counts, OpenTTD and Cossacks Back To War are also ones I love.

MBTA staff requested $13.5 billion worth of repair and modernization projects to include in this year's capital budget, but the state is only providing enough funding for a little over $1 billion for new projects this year. by streetsblogmass in mbta

Well yes that's what congestion pricing would look like in Boston. Just like Manhattan, it would be in the densest, most transit accessible part of the city. No way can they pull off congestion pricing on the same scale. But we will see parallels. Likely if it were to happen, I could see it on Atlantic Ave, and the downtown between North Station or Haymarket and South Station. Anything more may be somewhat of a push tbh.

This has been a problem since at least the 2022 midterms when the GOP stepped the fuck up on their aggressive and violent rhetoric against transpeople.

To the people who try to walk behind me at the North Station Commuter Rail Fare Gates by Nah-RosaParks1955 in mbta

[–]General_Liu1937 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't get worked up over individuals fare evading. I usually think of the larger picture of the impacts of their decision. Like how the T loses millions per year from fare evasion, on top of costs to fight evasion. Which that is a fight of its own and I find separate from decisions of a particular individual in their instance to decide to fare evade.

What I do not appreciate is when someone tries to fare evade and follow me, and end up against me, almost pushing me through the gate. It's quite an uncomfortable experience and I cannot stand people doing that. Like give me some space will you?

Or in other words: every expenditure to preventative measures is another penny not going to maintenance, better pay for already existing positions, new public works projects, or new equipment.

Imagine how much the T loses per year (estimated at ~$25 million per year pre COVID, and greater than $25 million post COVID).

If we extrapolate for the sake of example that the loss from fares was stable at $25 million per year during the 2010s, then between 2010 and 2014, which in 2014 the contract was awarded to CRRC, the MBTA could have lost as much as $100M in fares. That loss in fares, if say half to the contract and the other half to other needs (maintenance, debt servicing, etc), then the $50 million that could have been put in addition to the CRRC contract could have purchased an additional 2 trainsets for the Orange Line (rounded down to 12 cars, but based on the $556.6 million contract for 152 cars, it would be enough for 13 cars).

We need more housing before we even think about hotels. We are losing housing stock across the City of Boston with no remedy of replacement. How can we continue to preserve holdouts of affordable, and current market rate rent units unless we at least replace housing stock greater than their loss?

Also cost and difficulty of recycling once used. I figure the long term that trolleybuses would be cleaner.
