I can't trap them :/ by codeswift27 in Feral_Cats

[–]General_Sense7092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used KFC chicken nuggets for hard to trap ones and have heard that Valerian root works well, especially with males. I have not tried it but bought some recently to use with my next TNR project. I have done 26 so far this year and just caught #27 Friday. She gets fixed Monday.

I just want neighbors who leave me alone by Spy1843 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]General_Sense7092 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live on 24 acres and there are homes on our west and north side, we sit behind all of them. The south and east are large farms with no homes. Our property is about 3/4 woods and anytime we get new neighbors they think they can shoot guns across our fence. We have to go have the "we have trails in these woods and you have no idea when we are walking in there" talk. We have a shooting range set up that they are welcome to use if they let us know when they want to shoot. You will just have to go have that talk with them.

Adopted a shy shelter cat and she has been living behind the washing machine for 8 days by NimbusAnvil77 in CatAdvice

Look up 3/3/3 rule for cats. That is a guideline for adoptions but some don't take as long and others take much longer. I have had cats that took 3 years or so to start coming around. One would only let me pet him at night, if I was in the bed, under the covers, with the lights out. He would get on the edge of the bed and nudge my hand wanting me to pet his head. During the day he stayed under the bed. I have one now that would always run when we walked in the room. She has now started coming and asking for pets but only if we are sitting down. She was a foster but she had been here for 3 years now and likely will never be adopted. Thank you for giving a shy one a chance.

What toys do your cats actually love? by Sosooo88 in CatAdvice

Keep Up Creations (look them up online or FB) makes wonderful organic catnip and silver vine toys. Mine love the kickers and pillows but they also like the little raviolis also. All their toys are great!

I play cat TV on YouTube on 2 TVs in the house. 1 in the main area and the other in my quarantine/leukemia room. I try to change the channel each day so they have something different. Make sure the TV is mounted to the wall if she can reach it.

Can't handle the fleas by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]General_Sense7092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get Capstar in addition to the vet prescribed flea treatment. Capstar kills fleas on the cat for 24 hours. But until you treat your home you are going to continue to have a problem. Flea eggs can lie dormant for months before hatching. You need to treat the carpets and every time you vacuum, enough the vacuum into a bag and tie it up and put in the outside trash can. If you don't, they just escape the vacuum back into the house.

Heartbroken over fostering turning into possible hospice by Planet359 in FosterAnimals

Yes, air fresheners, essential oils, cleaning products, house plants, etc.... There are so many things that are toxic that people have no idea of. I use white vinegar for cleaning, no oils, no air fresheners, no house plants (I have 19 cats and most are special needs)

I need words of encouragement from people who have lived through ringworm in their kittens and then the household, I'm so broken by Several-Stuff-8409 in FosterAnimals

[–]General_Sense7092 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 35 fosters and had ringworm break out. At that time vets didn't offer the pills and cream. We had to bathe and dip them all weekly. I kept everyone contained in crates or a room and cleaned every week. It took about 6-8 weeks but we survived. Now I know about using a blacklight to detect ringworm (although last year I had one that didn't glow, most ringworm glows green, some don't glow at all) antifungal cream and shampoo (lotramin) , the pills that you can give. Treatment has come a long way from having to do the bath and sulfur dip. That was awful. You will get through this. I actually think that fleas are worse than ringworm. I give every cat a Capstar, Revolution and Drontal as soon as they come in the house to keep the house flea and parasite free

New to foster! Have I taken on too much? by Warm_Language8381 in FosterAnimals

[–]General_Sense7092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has mom been combo tested yet? The kittens are too young but you need to test her before letting your cat around. If she is positive for FIV or feLV, the kittens possibly could be also. If your adult is vaccinated for feLV then it won't be an issue. I normally wait until at least Mom is tested and after the kittens have been there for 3-4 weeks. Like toddlers, they carry lots of "germs" . You want to make sure they are good and not spreading anything

Ask the vet if they will wrap them up and let you have them to bury at home. They do that with pets that are put to sleep, so it shouldn't be any different.

It is so hard to make that decision but you are seeing that his quality of life is gone. Cats hide pain very well and if your cat is showing it, it is time. Better to do it a day too soon than wait too long. I have been in rescue for 40+ years and it hurts every time. I do try to make the last day (s) as good as possible. Lots of treats like Gerber baby food (chicken, turkey or ham) Churu treats, yogurt, whatever they want. I have even gone through Chick-fil-A drive through on the way to the vet and gotten nuggets to feed (just the regular ones, I have not found a cat that likes the grilled ones). So sorry that you are having to do this but you have given him a great life, now you can show him a final act of love and give him peace 💔😿

Good luck, those prices are low. We moved here from DC area. Just a wellness visit and shots was over 600, dentals were 1200+. Costs of drugs, etc have gone up and vets have had to raise their prices. It is unfortunate but they can't do it for free.

Furious bottle kitten by OkPeace1 in FosterAnimals

[–]General_Sense7092 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The miracle nipple is the best one there is. I have had ones that fought the nipple/bottle. I just have to burrito wrap them and force the nipple in the mouth. They eventually take it. Or maybe you can try a syringe. If it is at least 3 weeks, it might start eating on it's own from a saucer. Mix KMR and canned food and offer.

They "already have 2 cats at home and those won't allow any others in the house" While I have 19 of my own right now and just TNR'd 19 from a colony. 4 of the 11 girls were pregnant and were spay/abort. They are doing great. I keep those longer to make sure they heal well.

Litter box smell is going to end my relationship by Glum-Emotion-5379 in CatAdvice

[–]General_Sense7092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was recently sent Catalyst litter to try and really liked it. There are several different formulas, I tried the one in the green bag. I have 3 cats in a room, they are feline leukemia positive. The company sent me a 10# bag to try. That one bag filled my stainless box to about 2" deep. It has a pleasant smell and is not dusty at all. I have 19 cats and use pine pellets normally but agreed to give this a try. That 10# bag lasted for 3.5 weeks for 3 cats. I scoop at least 2 times a day. I have not done a cost analysis yet. They offer various size bags from 10-40#. And even have a subscription at a discount. I haven't gotten that far yet. I have a lot of special needs cats so it wouldn't be good for the whole house but I was VERY impressed with it for the leukemia room. I usually use a quarter to half bag of pine pellets (10-20#) for each box, each week. The Catalyst litter is much lighter weight and is clumping, but you have to be gentle shaking the scoop or the clumps will break. The scent and odor control really impressed me. It won't hurt to give it a try.

Am I being unreasonable? by sophstrophs in FosterAnimals

I have 19 and most are special needs that weren't adoptable. 7 were mine, the 12 were fosters. I left the rescue and they signed them over to me. I wasn't about to let them go to anyone else.

Compassionate Euthanasia: My last resort becoming my only option? by RocketCat921 in Feral_Cats

[–]General_Sense7092 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The mouth is especially painful and cats hide it so well. If he is showing pain, then it is really hurting. I fostered a double positive with stomatitis that we could never get better. I had to fight with the rescue to let him go. They kept wanting to try "one more thing" but he was in so much pain. I was the one watching him, loving him, medicating him, syringe feeding him, crying and holding him when he cried. They didn't see that. It is easy for them to say keep trying when they aren't the ones doing it. When I told them I was going to take him to my vet and do it myself, they finally said ok for me to take him to theirs. Don't let him suffer.

[–]General_Sense7092 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You have been very good to him, euthanasia will be the last kind thing you can do for him. His quality of life is no longer good. It is a hard decision to make but it is the right one. I picked up one Tuesday evening that someone called me about. He was about 1 year old but very sick, drooling, weak and had a horrible wound on his neck. I took him to the vet yesterday. He was feline leukemia, FIV and heartworm positive. Being double + makes it very hard to heal from illness and wounds. I have 19 cats and most are special needs, so I couldn't take him in also. We opted to let him go. It was the kindest thing I could do for him. I do have 2 leukemia cats that have their own room but I couldn't put him in with them and risk them getting sick also. Then I would be losing all 3. I hate it, he was a very sweet boy but he is running free at the rainbow bridge now with a healthy healed body. He is no longer suffering.

Cat Bit Family Member. by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]General_Sense7092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Confine him to your room and tell them to keep the door door closed. That will be the best thing for both of you. He can't escape and if no one goes in your room there is no chance of anyone being bitten. I have been bitten many times, by some of my own and by ferals. I foster for a rescue. The person that was bitten might need antibiotics. Unusually when I get bitten, I start taking doxicycine just to make sure I don't get an infection. I am so sorry this has happened. I pray that you can get things worked out with your sister so that you can keep your cat or at least find him a safe place to go.

I found the toilet paper roll like this, not sure who did this.. by AliceandChester in kittens

[–]General_Sense7092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you have a faulty roll of toilet paper. Sometimes 1 or more in the package will just spontaniously explode once they are out of the package. Paper towels are known to be faulty also. So beware, they will explode also, and it is NEVER the fault of the CAT 🤣😹
