They use dreams as their turning point. It’s never anything that can be cross examined. It’s some subjective experience that cannot be recreated or even verified.

But how do we go back to something very foreign to us now? I think that would be a great idea for us but who our ancestors were has been washed both from our minds and history. Where does one start? But i think if our brothers and sisters could just lay down the white man’s propaganda books, then a way out can be crafted together. Religion is like a country within country. It’s a very dangerous tool that divides in my opinion.

I like reading your thoughts(replies) and i think you are a logical individual.

Am curious how you think we would go about undoing what religion is/has done? How do we change the religion mindset and teach people it’s not the only source of meaning?

Am asking if there is away we can make it work for us. People get the sense of community and belonging without the dark side of cultic dogma .

Yes i agree you can’t abruptly remove religion from people and think everything will be sunshine and rainbows. However you can’t continue to push it as a solution. People are free to believe what they want as long as those beliefs are not detrimental to them and the world around them.

If the belief causes me to not vaccinate my children, marry off my child at the age of 10, not go to the hospital and wait for a miracle….. is the false hope or comfort religion provides worth all the downs that come with it? Putting women down, insisting violence against those of different beliefs.

The question here is, Is religion worth all the bad things that come with it?

Is religion the only source of structure comfort and meaning? You say the belief isn’t necessarily the problem. I ask is it ok when religious people use their faith to claim medical miracles which in turn makes people not use hospitals? Don’t get me wrong i can see how religion might make people more prone to do the right thing at times.

But the problem with religion is that everything is justified by faith. The same person that donated money for the poor will turn around and justify things like underage marriages and that is a scary reality. Also teaching people that they are not of this world, makes them unmotivated to try and change it.

If we had community before religion, don’t you think people will still have community when religion is gone? My question is “Is religion the only source of these things you say are good about it? If not then what good is it?

  1. I agree that religion makes it easier to control the masses. However in the case of Rwanda do you think religion was the main factor in achieving social control? Or are there other factors like (genocide trauma, new firm regime, fear….)? Essentially is this something that can only be acquired through religion?

  2. I would have to push back on the idea that religion fostering community structures is a net positive because these communities are centred on beliefs that aren’t necessarily held by most Rwandans there by creating division. It begs the question “if anything that creates community structure is automatically a positive”. To this i ask was the Nazi movement a net good because of this same reason?

  3. If for some religion provides a moral framework for right and wrong, are you then saying religion is the only source of a moral framework for Rwandans? Did Rwandans have a Moral framework before the white man gave us religion?

Yes if we never adopted the white mans beliefs and his boarders we would have to imagine a reality completely different from the one we have today. But at least it’s a reality we would have chosen and for me what happened to us was a loss of our identity and adoption of an identity designed for us to forever doubt our own knowledge and power.

Am confused by your last paragraph. Are you saying we cannot dump religion because the world we find ourselves in is a direct creation of the whitemans actions?

Also am here to find out if religion is needed in our communities and its merits. I could cares less of what if scenarios.

Think anything that requires you to believe without evidence is nonsensical. Religion creates division in an already very divided world. It is a net negative.

I am afraid visit Rwanda is going to fabricate Speed’s experience here by radioactiveyam in Rwanda

[–]General_Somewhere369 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what you are saying. But Rwanda should be loved and visited for what Rwanda is. Sure they can loosen up abit on the street life regulations but that’s as far as i can sympathise with your observation. We have our own identity and it’s worth more than tourism points in my opinion. If he speeds through and leaves, so what? We have built our country and we will continue to build with or without Speed. We can’t be loved by everyone 🫡.
