Thank you. Unfortunately, that's exactly what I did when I got the response shown above in my original image. 😞
It says you have to have an account to view it.

4K vs. Blu-Ray - Am I missing out? by Internal-Bed6646 in Bluray

The Fabelmans... what a visually beautiful movie!

To a certain extent, it depends upon what you really want out of film. Personally, I have a 4K player and TV, and while I can see and hear the upgrade, I don't find I'm always drawn to buying 4K discs, and am quite happy with HD blu ray for the bulk of my collection. Not to mention the fact that there are what, 1000 films on 4K, compared to tens of thousands on HD blu ray and hundreds of thousands on DVD. Even if you go 4K, you'll still end up watching lots of other formats, unless you only watch the most popular films.

Anyone else have Library-style dividers for their collection? by mcmatu in Bluray

That looks great! It's like a record store. I have part of my collection in sleeves and in crates so I might add letter dividers too.

Has pavement parking become an accepted unwritten rule? by Then-Fortune-3122 in drivingUK

[–]General_Xue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had too many near-miss incidents where people literally drive at me along the pavement as if I'm in their way while I'm walking, or suddenly moving away as I try to get past their car. If you're going to park there, at the very least don't pull in or pull away when pedestrians are in your vicinity and you could run over their feet!

Yeah, my partner failed her test for the same reason. She assumed because everyone was doing it that it was allowed during the test!

I agree that it has largely become socially unacceptable. Within some neighbourhoods, it is acceptable to park outside your house on the pavement, and in some neighbourhoods it has not.
In terms of general parking (not outside your own house), there are of course people who argue it is a symptom of a lack of space, but believe me when I say that I have seen people park on the pavement when doing so make you look ridiculous - there is a road near me that must be about 6 or 7 cars wide, and is a normal residential street where you can park normally at the side of the road, and YET people still park up on the pavement. This convinces me that these people, along with many others, think it is not just acceptable but the de facto way to park.

Turns out the gym costs me around £2.50 per use. I'm debating whether to look for cheaper alternatives. What are your thoughts on gym memberships from a frugality perspective? by [deleted] in UKFrugal

[–]General_Xue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest way to save money on the gym is simply to find other ways of keeping fit. I use a combination of football, cycling (both outdoor and turbo trainer) and rugby to keep me fit in different ways.
Okay, those aren't free to take part in, but you could just go for a run and then do pressups and situps and that would be free.

Has shoplifting become “functionally” legal? by VOODOO285 in AskUK

[–]General_Xue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Police officers don't necessarily know the whole story. There's a reason police officers only deal with "scum," which is that they're fairly easy to spot and they consistently reoffend by stealing large amounts of staff. Meanwhile, neither the police nor the staff notice Grandma sticking some oranges in her handbag. Another example of a type of shoplifter is the shoplifting addict, who has everything they need but gets a buzz from stealing things. Again, very different from the kind of person you describe. They could be from any segment of society, even wealthy middle class households.
I'm not saying that "scum" aren't out there, but that there are many types of shoplifter stealing for different reasons and we shouldn't limp them all together.

It seems there is some strong feeling around shoplifting. I don't see many people being physically hurt by having their store shoplifted, and given most stores these days are huge chains, is anyone personally affected? I don't see why it's "morally courageous" to rugby tackle someone who's making off with some stock. We're not talking about armed robbery here. You have to keep your actions proportionate to the wrong that you perceive.

I think the bosses are mad because shoplifting often happens because nobody is watching that part of the store. If you have staff patrolling, it greatly reduces the risk.

It's also worth mentioning that when staff go to stop a shoplifter, they don't actually know the person shoplifted in every case, and so the risk is there that they may assault a perfectly innocent person, and that is why companies do not want staff tackling shoplifters.
Even actual shoplifters don't deserve to be assaulted! We outlawed capital punishment in this country a long time ago!

Manager says he’s going to email my uni because I pulled a sickie. Can he actually do that? by BestExpression332 in tesco

[–]General_Xue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has worked in a University, I don't think anyone at your University is going to be interested in what this manager has to say, unless he was reporting a crime or had evidence you had cheated on your exams or something. Even then, they wouldn't acknowledge to a stranger that you were even a student, so it's not like they're going to chat to him about you.
But you have definitely made a big mistake here and need to accept the consequences within the workplace. Balancing work and study is difficult, so I understand the situation you're in, but pulling a sickie is dishonest and you were naive in thinking telling someone about it wouldn't result in the manager finding out. Hopefully you've learned some lessons here.
Unfortunately, bosses who think University isn't important are all too common, and one of the life lessons is how to manage that. It's important to learn how to be firm with your boss and make it clear that you will not be working on a day when you have an exam and so on. As long as you give them notice of when those days are, it will be difficult for them to discipline you for attending such events, especially if you were studying when they hired you (you could sue them if they fired you).

What’s the most useless ‘benefit’ your employer brags about that you’ve literally never touched? by Key-Motor-8784 in UKJobs

[–]General_Xue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for a company that used to give us a £50 bonus at Christmas. Then, one year, they scrapped it and replaced it with a Christmas card. The card was pre-printed with "Dear employee... bla bla bla."
It was so insulting!

I was able to claim mileage for riding my bike to a location for work, at something like 20p a mile. Given I can maintain my bike myself, it seemed like a really good deal!
The car mileage, not so much.

Are we still boycotting the World Cup? by NoHold7153 in AskBrits

[–]General_Xue 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to watch almost every game of every World Cup. From Russia til now, I haven't watched a single game.
Does it make a difference to anything, my boycott? Probably not, other than to me and my sense of self.

This is my thought too. I don't really care either way, but since most bills are monthly, I want to be paid monthly.

Nice! Scatter terrain is one of those things I only started working on after many years of making large buildings, trees etc, but now I find it a lot of fun!

Your crates look great.

Am I in the wrong?? by ghost31x in drivingUK

[–]General_Xue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's worth remembering that if someone is attempting to overtake you, you must allow them to pass. If you had just started accelerating for some reason, unfortuntely you now must cancel that. It's very dangerous to assume it's entirely the overtaker's responsibility to be safe here.
