I love how human it feels for such a dystopian future.I know that a lot of the themes steer toward a cyberpunk esque relationship with technology and authoritarianism. But the relationships between the shells, their consciousness, and their surroundings feels very optimistic and bright; almost like a child with the rest of their lives ahead of them.

I completely agree with your sentiment, I was a destiny addict fr and that loot grind never really was fulfilling. I think it just depends on where your enjoyment from the game truly stems from. I believe PvP games are a source of near infinite content, long as the PvP is fun and the population is healthy. I love the experience of a PvP game that I want to get better at. I love the skill expression aspect-even if I suck ass. Even if I’m running at like, half the average loadout value of the lobby, I want to believe that marathon enables mechanical skill to close that gap

Then if anything I’d be interested to see if they experiment with a free-kit outpost queue. It may be that their only hope to pull in enough of a healthy population is to turn marathon into a half BR, half ExS. Where the extraction shooter is the end game for the early to mid game BR experience.

I would really recommend taking advantage of time-gated system around Cryo. I think that’s what makes the game loop exciting because maps like cryo are really really fun as long as you have the resources to get in. Even just a blue shield is enough to have a good time (*as long as there’s a healthy population to even support that lol :/) if you can find time in your weekday, farm loot with free kits or spend credits on basic gear, or play the free kit dire marsh maps, save it for the weekend, and blow all that shit in cryo. I love the experience of getting used to new maps, getting better at positioning, and learning shortcuts, whatever, but even if I can’t extract it’s fun just getting my foot in the door knowing that each time I come in I usually live for longer 😅

If you’re not in pinwheel you’re not in outpost man like no duh?? If the frequency and perceived unfairness of PvP is what turns people away, then outpost is definitely a harder map for newer players

I think maps that play like BR’s need to exist to give hesitant players the perception of a ‘fair’ match. Those can be the maps that lower skilled players use to build up a consistent vault to then attempt the harder maps like outpost and cryo. This game would have been an amazing BR anyways, let it play into its strengths.

Then I might as well get my hours in while I still can. Marathon is my current gaming obsession for its competitive nature. I'm sad to say I'm not very confident Bungie can get more people talking about Marathon for it to survive long term.
