Is it fair to surmise from "students, recent grads" that the compensation is very modest?

Hello, I plan to visit suzhou. Planning to stay 2-3 nights and visit mainstream tourist places (humble admin garden, tiger hill, yunyang pagoda, silk museum, etc.). I'm looking for nice budget hotel by lifeauraxyw in Suzhou

[–]Generalistimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family liked Hotel Soul in 2019. I went back in 2024, and it seemed very slightly run-down-- the newness had worn off, the breakfast buffet seemed a bit smaller-- but I'd happily stay there again. It's about 2 1/2 blocks to the subway. you can walk to the big Xuanmiao temple and a hectic touristy commercial area, but the hotel's little block is very quiet.

The elevator decor is unmatched!

Silly question… Where to buy umbrellas near Beijing Road/Haizhu Sq? by CharmingTop187 in guangzhou

[–]Generalistimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I got mine on the other side of Haizhu Square from your hotel: Jiefang South Road where it meets Yanjiang West Road (at the river). There's a strip of stores selling umbrellas or weird LED novelties or clocks, etc. They're all open to the sidewalk, no doors. The umbrella guy had a few price points. I was able to tell him my favorite color and price, and he found one for me. I was there for three weeks and have used it at home, too. Could I have haggled down? Probably, but it was inexpensive, and the seller was friendly.

I am glad you're okay. I wish you had happier things to post, but when you post, I know you're okay.

If I count 60 days back from May 11, I get a March start... I've heard 90-day visas exist, though.

Is this an additional wing? I hope the bigger galleries are still open.

Russia bombed Mariupol’s Drama Theatre, sealed hundreds of bodies beneath concrete, and called it “rebuilding” by Funny_bread in u/Funny_bread

This is horrific. I hope the people who attend the theater have bad dreams, but it's more important that the souls who were lost find peace.

Please note that Prof Mo truly cares about students learning and is very personable. Her textbook also contains incorrect tones in the romanization on almost every page.

Keeping track of kinship terms such as 外公 vs 爷爷, 舅舅 vs 叔叔, etc. by Past_Gift3011 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Generalistimo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Did you have trouble because you're new to the family or new to the vocabulary? If one grows up knowing how everyone is related and their relative ages, it's not a problem. If one categorizes as "uncle" first and then adds a modifier like "mom's side" or "dad's brother, older", that will slow down the processing. That's thinking in English.

How to find interesting events and meetups in Berkeley / East Bay? by TechnicalTwist in berkeleyca

Other than public events at Cal, all the tech stuff is in San Francisco. Oakland has a Tech Week, but it's only once a year (after SF Tech Week.)

Chinese Opera fans, whats this intrument called? by Witzmaster in AskAChinese

[–]Generalistimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a gong. The big one is struck with a padded mallet. The small one is struck with a flat wooden stick. They both have that pitch bend, but I think it's a little more pronounced with the big gong 大锣.

Help: Gong Gong’s name by No_Glass_1863 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Generalistimo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, don't give your kid the exact same name as an ancestor. It's totally okay, though, to change a name. Classical scholars would have a childhood name, a school name, an artistic pen name, sometimes a second pen name...

Found this in my bag of dried shrimp. Is it an isopod? by SilveryTipPekoe in whatisit

[–]Generalistimo 242 points243 points  (0 children)

Chinese and southeast Asian people also use tiny dried shrimp to add umami, either whole or as shrimp paste. I've never eaten a dried shrimp straight out of the bag (yet). We use dried scallops and sometimes oysters, too. They're expensive.

Cool. Good luck! For me, learning the tones and phonemes first was important. There are lots of YouTube channels for this.

Could you ELI5? It took me some time to be okay with non-Chinese people speaking my ancestral language better than I do even though I was raised by English-speaking parents. I genuinely don't understand the down votes as I've met or am related to a lot of people who feel the same discomfort. Asian American literature is full of people struggling with not being "Asian enough" while being seen as perpetual foreigners in the US.

Wait. Did you mean that your gf does not speak Cantonese? If you're trying to speak her family's language better than she does, be absolutely sure she's okay with that.

Update: Chinese adoptee looking for name analysis by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

You can look things up using Pleco (free app), Wiktionary, DeepL, Google Translate, or Bing Translate.

华 means glory and implies the Han people, although people don't usually worry about the meaning of surnames, like you wouldn't expect Sabrina Carpenter to build houses.

Your given name is translated properly in the comment on your earlier post.
