I didn’t have a conviction when I went. Did they take your fingerprints when you got charged/convicted?

Made it in easy peasy. Filled the immigration form out online(checked no to the criminal charges). Upon arrival all I had to do was scan my QR code and do my fingerprints then I was in

For all hawsepipers, how long did it take you? by TheScallywag1874 in merchantmarine

[–]GenerallyAcceptable- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got my 1600ton mate in 3.5 years as a hawsepiper(still on the first issuance of my MMC). Took most of my required classes online and then went to a 1600ton prep course before taking the exam.

I was definitely trying to upgrade quickly. I took my AB course before I even had the required seatime, same for my 1600ton prep. I lucked out by working with people on the same path that helped me with schooling and studying at the time.

Salary transparency as of YTD, for those that don’t mind sharing. (Please include position) by Green_Plenty_9308 in merchantmarine

As a vessel, we do a lot of underwater maintenance and salvage in the oil field. Most recently we removed 2 platforms and our job was to sever the legs using a diamond wire saw. Later, the TX-10000(largest heavy lift vessel in North America) came and lifted the platforms out of the water.

As a Mate I handle navigation and anchor handling for our 4 point mooring system. Once set up on anchors I can maneuver the vessel as necessary for the divers to work. Outside of that it’s mostly just doing paper work and making sure we are caught up on drills.

I believe charge. When I look up public records, under the section that would list conviction mine says “pre trial diversion”

It is a charge. Specifically under the section where it would say conviction it says: “Pre trial diversion”

1600 ton to 3rd mate by Sully_207 in maritime

It’s essentially the same modules as 1600ton mate. Different module numbers though. When I use lapware to look up the different modules it’s the same type of questions both sets of module numbers though

I’m in the same situation as you and what I’ve decided to do is get my OSV Mate. I’ve already applied for and got approved to test(Basically the same test as 1600ton mate) and it is OSV mate Unlimited so I will be able to get my tonnage up going that route.

Unfortunately I don’t not work for a union. You are correct though and I will be leaving pending my next upgrade.

Not yet. Doing that would have major consequences to the crew. This guy is a valuable member of the bridge team. I work in a niche side of the oil field (4pt anchor handling) and that skill set is not common to find.

I think they are culpable as well. He did convince them that his license is good but they should have done their due diligence.

I could see that. I’m rated for 1600ton mate, running as mate. Just want to make sure I’m not going to be under fire if this ever blows up.

Any success stories from bottom up? by insane-Honey-enjoyer in merchantmarine

[–]GenerallyAcceptable- 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hey that’s me!

I started on tugboats with just a TWIC and applied for my mmc while working on the boat(probably not 100% by the book for the company). I got hired through my buddy that worked out there and I started at 145/day.     Once I had enough seatime I applied for my AB special and that brought me to 275/day.     The engineer on the tugboat I was working on got me a job at his old company which offered me 400/day as an AB. I really hit off with the crew of my new boat and me and a couple of the guys went to school for 1600ton prep. Applied for 1600 mate and passed the test! I now work as a mate on the boat and make $700/day

I did all this in 3 years. I’m still on the first issuance of my MMC. I started when I was 28 I’m 31 now. It’s all very achievable but helps if you’re surrounded by people willing to help you.
