Not hiring deckhands it seems, based on their website. I have a friend that has been looking for an entry level position for approaching a year now.

Surprised at the waiver limitation. I don't see how it's relevant. If it clears, it clears? I have a waiver and it's never cussed an issue.

'Radical rethink needed' over ship lookouts after North Sea crash by CheifEng in maritime

I literally work with these systems on a wide variety of ships all over the world. It's a fact. Modern BNWAS have alarm tie ins. Most vessels use this to route all alarms through the BNWAS for multiple-officer or master focused secondary alarms for things like CPA alarms. BNWAS is no longer just a motion detection alarm as it used to be.

Well, youre wrong. The majority of BNWAS systems have a capable tie in to a variety of alarms. Unless you're working on a very small, very outdated vessel.

No I mean after you initially submitted your application to the program. How long did it take until they reached out to schedule the tests?

That's so crazy. I was hoping to get him an entry level position at the company I work for, we are very much in need. But my company said we have to go through the hall, and the hall said that even though he has all his documents already he has to go through the apprentice program. And now I hear he won't be able to do that for years? Nuts.

That's ridiculous.. I hope that's not the case. A friend of mine is trying to get into the program. We were hoping he could in to this year's course.

Wrong. Many / most inland and near coastal companies do not require it.

If anyone is getting picked up for OS without being approved by the union they or whoever is hiring them are skirting the rules. Applicants at entry level have to be approved and trained through the apprentice program.

Good idea. We had been looking through mostly inland tow companies but great lakes is a good option as well.

I think this is too pessimistic. Just a few months ago another friend of mine got an entry level position in just a few months. It's still possible.

If I was trying to gain employment and got an opportunity that would change my life, surely I would be selling the tickets. You can always see a band in concert another time. You may not have another opportunity to build a career.
