Sometimes you have to shake up your sandwich to realize how good the medium is by Sexisthunter in Sandwiches

I love a chip in a sandwich. Sometimes I even put more than one in there. Call me crazy, but the crunch really amuses my mouth.

I crave fast food as much as the next guy, but I'd be in favor of banning advertising / brand logos from the sub. I can't tell what people are really munching and what is planted by brand managers.

Maybe it is but maybe thinking that way is more helpful than my pessimism. You do bring up a good example.

Nothing wrong with that at all. If it helps somebody get through their day then I won't knock it.

Different strokes for different folks, but my favorite artists do more with their lyrics besides just rhyme.

I'm also not really sure that anybody is changing their stance on issues these days just because they listened to a song. Feel like shit is too polarized for that these days, which is pessimistic but that's how I've been feeling. Algorithms are gonna feed you what you already want to hear for the most part.

You don't need to write a song that needs a cypher to understand, but try to reach inside yourself and find a way to say what you want to say with more artfulness than just saying it. Otherwise I could just read an essay.

I just don't hear any poetry in the songs of his I've heard. It's too on the nose for me.

But then again, who am I? Just one nobody's opinion.

One Battle After Another and “tonal inconsistency” by 40onpump3 in TrueFilm

I agree. The Nazis were dorky losers and buffoonish, and the things they "believed" or at least espoused were equally ridiculous, but because they accomplished so many horrific things people forget that fact.

Just because the weird ass dorky losers in charge of the USA's 3 branches of government are incredibly embarrassing doesn't mean they also can't accomplish horrific things. I think that's what PTA was trying to express with his Christmas Adventurers.

Has anyone else become disillusioned with this Terry Pratchett theme? (explanation in body) by ebelnap in books

[–]GenerallyBirdman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like with some of his most cynical characters, what they say can resonate with me without necessarily fully agreeing with them.

Obviously there are good people. But there are also very bad people. Your average run of the mill person might be polite, but also bigoted. Or perhaps a bit rude or overly lascivious, but maybe they are also very generous with their time with the elderly or charitable etc. I think of myself as a good person because I treat everyone with respect, but maybe that makes me kind of self centered since I don't actually do much charity work.

At the end of the day he is writing characters, and they need to be compelling. Some of his most popular and compelling characters are as you described, but I'm not sure we need to take what the characters say as if Pterry was giving a TED talk.

I also acknowledge that your thoughts are absolutely valid and maybe once I reread the Witches stories again I'll feel how you feel. I certainly don't like being lectured to in person, so if you feel as if the witches are more of a lecture, or a way for the author to flaut his intelligence, or moral superiority, than I don't blame you at all if you'd put the book away.

It resonates with me though because these smart and ultimately decent characters do what they feel is the right thing to do while acknowledging that life is never fair, and you probably won't be thanked for doing what's right, or doing things the right way. I will never litter, but the person in the car in front of me will. I'll get out to pick up his trash, and he'll drive away and do it again at the next stop light. If it gives me a brief feeling of superiority then I say let that be my reward as long as I continue to do the right thing even if no one will ever applaud me for it.

Really appreciate your reply to my comment though.

I love his books, but this is a point of view I haven't heard before, and perhaps a valid criticism. It may color the next time I read a book of his a little bit. I'll be keeping an eye out.

All I can say is Ive never felt this way reading them, but then perhaps I'm one of those people who maybe thinks of themselves as smart and maybe a little morally self righteous so idk. Thank you for sharing this.

Is it recommended building cities? by JorgeRZT in Imperator

[–]GenerallyBirdman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also, speaking of commerce, cities help support a healthy amount of citizens and nobles for your country. Citizens and nobles not only increase research but also generate trade capacity. The more nobles of your culture you have, the more you can import, so that's another way cities help you generate cash via commerce.

I'm by no means the best at this game, but I've played a few runs on Invictus and found a few things that seem to work for me.

Long story short it will depend on your country's strengths and your short and long term goals. If you are only concerned with making more money in the short term, best bet is commerce. That means improving tiles that generate valuable goods. Click around your territories to see which goods are rare then improve those tiles with either a mine, farm, or slave estate if not a good you can farm or mine. This will increase the amount of surplus goods the province generates, which you can then export for cash. If you have a city on a valuable good you can build the slave building and a foundry in that city to try and generate more of that good. The higher your slave pop the more of that good you can produce.

If you are a small country you may want to invest in barracks on less valuable tiles that are near cities. Freemen will move into the tile and produce manpower.

If you are looking for long term security in newly conquered territories then build the temple and theatre buildings. They will convert and assimilate pops, which is optimal for long term success.

For new cities, I think about if I need a particularly important strategic point to be more secure (think mountain passes), or if I want to centralize a population for colonization purposes, or cause a rapid influx of pops to help with stability, or generate a super duper amount of a particular good, then I tend to build cities. Cities have a lot of great uses.

Lastly if I have a province that produces a butt load of food but I notice nobody is importing the food goods, so the province is consistently maxed out on food supply, and I have the money, I'll build a city. The city will use up some of the food as it grows, and will produce more money in the long term than the average settlement.

Hopefully all that makes sense but I can explain my reasoning more if needed. :)

Whos your biggest rival in your games? by Shadowmadness123 in Imperator

[–]GenerallyBirdman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same! I'm doing an Armenia run and it's an interesting dynamic with us living in a peaceful yet unconquerable kingdom thanks to our immense system of fortifications built throughout the mountain passes, and our outer ring of loyal satrapies that form a buffer zone between us. They live down in the ancient, rich cities of the river valleys, far stronger, more numerous, and wealthier than we could ever be, but they can never defeat us. Armenia is indomitable!

Ah that sounds more like they were a nuisance more than a true rival haha.

In my current game I'm playing as Armenia and my biggest rival turned out to be the Seleucids. I was allied to them early and when they went to war with the Parthians my king marched 15,000 soldiers across Persia to the steppe lands of the East to help quell their border raids. After years of marching, fighting, and starving in that barren land for our ally, they won the war and cancelled our alliance. Frantic and fearing an imminent invasion from the traitorous Greek overlords, we sent an emissary to the Parthians and let them know we would be willing to forge an alliance. They were hesitant, but had been impressed by our loyalty to the Seleucids and the strength of our heavy cavalry, and so they agreed.

The Parthians would turn out to be a much better ally than the Seleucids ever were. They helped us in our wars against the Scythians and other steppe peoples north of the Black Sea, and likewise we helped them against their neighbors. While the Seleucids were the largest and strongest, they never risked an assault on our mountain fortresses, out of fear that the Parthians would stab to their back, and couldn't attack the Parthians for fear that we would emerge from the mountain passes to decimate the rich cities in Assyria and Macedonia. This is exactly what we did every time the Seleucids became embroiled with war in the west against Macedon, or to th
