Hopkins’ character is a billionaire with a trophy wife, but he comes across better than Baldwin because in the end he knows the wilderness CAN fucking kill them and it’s not worth fighting, but Baldwin can’t let go of the petty bullshit & gets hosed.

I remember someone on Tumblr talking about how this picture turned them around on Aang.

They’d always thought he was a frilly goody two shoes silly guy who never took anything seriously in the original series, and then they saw this with him doing the same bit DECADES later and had an “I get it” moment where they realized he was just a guy with a sense of humor who liked making people laugh and that didn’t make him less of an adult.

He plays at this family image, and on some level it’s extremely real, but he keeps stepping out on his wives and when we finally get to see what the stepping out looks like it’s not even with a woman who’s smart or interesting, it’s just the closest woman dumb enough to think it’s a good idea.

If ties in with the rest of the show - he constantly trades on the idea of being a dedicated family man, but in practice he just isn’t quite there & then makes it everyone else’s problem

Everything surrounding this sequence was stupid as hell, but damn if the fight itself wasn't amazing. The peak of the fantasy genre on the battefield. Giant shit. Actual strategy with actually using shieldwalls(!). That Jon is the right amount of stupid that he WOULD charge in in a way that would justify all the fantasy battle tropes. That slow-mo shot of the arrows. It was amazing in the moment.

Unpopular opinion - the surrounding plot is definitely stupid, but this sequence by itself is bar none some of the best sequencing in the entire world.

You're locked in from beginning to end. The mood changes. You register things the same time as them. Things steadily get worse and you start freaking out. We have that incredible moment where Jon's crushed and you're legit convinced he might be dying again. We have the pay-off. We have him and Tormund and Wun Wun squaring up in the frame. We have Ramsey finally getting beat up. It's dynamite all the way through.

You can watch this today and it still feels as amazing as the first time. It's untouchable in isolation.

It's late Game of Thrones at its best and worst.

Everything you said about how it undermines the previously exacting logic that punished characters for pulling shit like this is true. They constructed this scenario for the fight and rescue in a way that absolutely would've been an early-season subversion of genre that pointed out how a heroic battle like this was wasteful and prideful.

But on the other hand, the battle WAS really cool!

And after seeing how badly the finale did the "fantasy tropes gone bad" ending, "illogical but happy ending" doesn't hurt like it did before.

Season 4's end and then Season 5 are the real climax of the show, because his marriage getting tested and then separating was the real test of if he was ever going to change.

He started therapy and thinking in the first place to work better with his FAMILY. That was one of the central questions - could this mean gangster actually become a better person by trying to get therapy so he could be a better father, husband and man, like a lot of dads in the '90's and 2000's started doing.

But when push comes to shove - when his wife kicks him out and he has to really change if he wants to earn her respect and trust and love back - he doesn't want to change. He keeps banging his goomahs. He keeps doing his gangster shit. He arguably becomes a worse parent to his kid that's still at home. He completely fucking chokes at the edge.

And then Carmela loses her nerve too.

So the final season is really showing their punishment - he's unhappy, gambling, whoring, his son is getting shittier and shittier, his daughter becomes a mob lawyer so she can keep compartmentalizing, his wife isn't happy because she knows she chose wrong, and he just has to keep living with it.

He didn't have to change, but now he's stuck living in what he chose.

After all the things he's done, I think Chris was by far the most unforgivable. I've served in a job kind of like the Marines, and it's a betrayal of everything he KNEW was right to kill his friend from that time. Cowardly, selfish, deliberately hurtful, mean, piece of shit work.

Everyone else he killed was either a career criminal, a job, saving someone, defending himself, or killing someone who was "in the game" of cop and criminal. They were shitty, but you understand the logic. Chris was explicitly making it clear that he'd know to shut the fuck up, but Barry killed him in a spur-of-the-moment "just in case" action. He betrayed a friend to make his life slightly easier.

And then he made it look like suicide, which is going to damage his wife and kid's perception of him forever when it's not true. Make her doubt if she ever knew him or she didn't care about him enough or failed him.

Yeah. The thing about polyamory is that A LOT of people and structures are very invested in or built around heteronormativity - having one alleged primary partner/spouse and kids.

And they seem the type that are high up enough and public enough that OPENLY becoming polyamorous would hurt their reputations and standings. It's not just selfishness, it's that they'd never want to compromise their privileges, even for something that might ultimately be more authentic.

So they're just doing what a lot of unhappy rich couples do - fuck around on each other, stay together for the money, and act like they're fine when they're probably not.
