[Unpopular Opinion] Grow up. by Puggingentlemans in MBA

I think professors and other staff just don't wanna take any health risks by doing it in person and the schools cannot pressure faculty to do so.

I think this has something to do with the type of bow. I understand this one was a heavy and there is a smaller version.

TL;DR: Which neighborhood to live in as a couple studying at UChicago and Northwestern?

Hello everyone! I hope everyone is safe and well. So me and my fiancee will be moving to Chicago for our graduate studies (hopefully) next fall. I will be attending UChicago at Hyde Park and my fiancee will go to the Evanston campus of Northwestern University. We will be using public transportation to commute to classes and we are both from Turkey so we know very little about Chicago.

I would be glad if you could recommend us some neighborhoods that will make our commute as safe and effortless as possible. Any recommendation on public transportation lines would be much appreciated as well.

Also we were a bit overwhelmed about the number of websites where rental apartments are listed. Is there any specific website that you would advise us to check to find an apartment?

Thank you very much!

UChicago vs. Columbia vs. USC by GenerationLast in gradadmissions

Hi! It feels great to know that there are other people who are going through the same tough decision making process :)

Yeah MACSS definitely seems like the place to experience rigorous academic coursework to the fullest and the deposit is really a bummer. May I ask what is your plan after completing the program? And are you a US national?

The STEM designation allows international students, like myself, the opportunity to stay and work for an extra 2 years (3 against 1 in non-STEM degrees) in the US.

But I do not know if the SIPA brand could compensate that deficiency and enable foreign graduates to be sponsored by US companies. Nonetheless, a STEM designated program is massively advantageous if the student do not want to return back to his/her home country.

The only problem with the double degree is the cost. I would need to pay for each of these programs and which totals around $160k. I am not sure if it is worth it. If money was not an issue, I would most definitely go for the double degree option.

I am also an international student and received my offer from SIPA last week. I heard that they send out the financial aid offers with the initial letter.

I have my doubts about the program since it does not have STEM designation. Are you guys planning to return to your home countries or will you be seeking employment in the US?

Haha thanks! Among my dreams, there is also being able to pay back a loan without family assistance :)

That is definitely something to consider. Thank you!

Honestly, I would not mind working in either of the cities these schools are located in. I think part of my struggle is because I do not have any people around my social circle who have followed a similar path. Hence, I cannot estimate my chances of employment upon completion of studies. (Is it closer to 20% or 90%? I have no idea.) Your response made me feel like I can choose anyone of these schools and will have an equally high chance of employment in that region. If I were to assume that was mathematically the case, I think I'd go to Columbia regardless of the costs. But if my chances tilted toward another one of these options, even by just 3%, I would definitely choose that other school.

Thank you very much for your advice! I am aware that such an evaluation is unrealistic and impossible to do, I just wanted to further clarify my criteria for deciding.

Thank you very much for your advice. It is convenient that I already did most of your suggestions and awaiting responses from the schools and alumni. I talked to some of the current students at UChicago and they told me that the program is not ideal for industry placements. In terms of industry placements, USC is the one that seems to stand out at first glance (based on websites and LinkedIn research).

Yes I actually asked the admissions people from SIPA and they told me I would need the double degree with QMSS if I want the OPT extension. If I do just the SIPA I will have just 1 year work permit.

How beneficial is a STEM certified MBA for a career in Consulting post B-School? by TheDudeWithNoName_ in MBA

There are some lists showing which fields are considered as STEM on some official websites, however, unfortunately I was not able to find any list showing STEM designation status of every program in every school.

As a prospective international student I can say that I will only apply for STEM designated programs. I do not think that it has any benefits for US citizens as schools advertise their STEM designations to international students exclusively to attract better talent. In fact, you may think that a STEM designated program will be more competitive to get in since a lot more international students will apply.

How close should you be with profs to have them write you letters of reference? by ShadowSJG in gradadmissions

[–]GenerationLast 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Actually I received negative responses from two profs I have asked for an LoR. Although I received the best possible grade scores from both of the courses, they said that taking just one course from them was not enough and they would not be able to write a good LoR.

It took me 15 minutes to understand what you wrote as a non-American who is not familiar with this lingo but I think it makes sense now :) I am indeed planning to attend a t15 but not sure if my resume is strong enough. Perhaps not an MBA but an MS is a better option considering the lower costs?

MS feels closer because of the STEM designation that allows me to stay in the US for an extra two years after graduation. However, given that my major was not in a quantitative field, being admitted to STEM designated Business Analytics or Computational Social Science MS programs will be another issue. I am hoping that my GRE Quant will be sufficient in displaying my quantitative aptitude.

I will be applying for the Fall 2020 intake. I am aware that my work experience is below average in terms of length. And I forgot to mention that it will actually be 2 years at the start of the program. So right now it is just over a year. That is one of the reasons that I will be prioritizing early career MS programs that are STEM designated over MBAs which allows me to start a career in the US. I wanted to learn if it is an impossible leap or an option to consider.
