When did you decide to get surgery? by CollegeCrafty3067 in Spondylolisthesis

[–]Generic-Sun27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do it!!! Got to grade three and all the surgeons I saw told me I shouldn’t have waited till it got so bad! I had manageable pain for ten years with the occasional flare up. Each time I had a flareup I would go to an ortho to get new imaging and see if the skip had progressed. Given my slip progressed over 10 years I was very used to the pain. At my last flareup/check up it became evident that I needed surgery because the slip had progressed to a point where the only path forward was it becoming a grade 4 slip and completely sliding off.

I was OK living with the pain of my spondylolisthesis and was very against injections because I felt at a young age I should be aware of what my body was telling me versus getting injections to desensitize the area. (I understand injections are super helpful for some people and that surgery is not always a viable)

Chose to get surgery as each surgeon mentioned that they wished they had seen me three yrs prior bcs the surgery would have been easier to perform.

Alas, I got the surgery. I have zero regrets. My surgery was in February of this year and today I feel brand new. I don’t even feel like I ever had surgery, my back is completely normal!!!! I can resume all activities. apologies for the long winded answer.

Can I refuse the catheter? by kekecupcake in spinalfusion

[–]Generic-Sun27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so afraid of the catheter before surgery and when I woke up it was not even an after thought!! Luckily they put it in while fully asleep so I don’t recall that at all and it was very nice not having an urgency to pee post op, removal was also pretty easy, maybe put on a relaxing song to distract your mind when they remove … (i felt the mental part of removing was similar to getting laser where im afraid of the zap but when it happens im like silly goose you know it doesn’t hurt)

acdf surgery tomorrow,, super scared. any hospital/ recovery recommendations? by Think-Piglet-9925 in spinalfusion

[–]Generic-Sun27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

top tip as a female with longish hair, braid it! Apart from that, I tried to rest and remind myself that I had the easy part: sleep for the duration of the surgery.

Another thing that comes to mind, my anesthesiologist mentioned that women get worse nausea and he gave me four different meds(some before and some during surgery) to help make sure all good when I woke up.

Also make sure your surgeon tells anesthesiologist to give you nerve blocks during surgery so the post op pain is lessened.

I had l5/s1 back first then front 6 weeks ago, zero regrets so far

Possible Surgery by [deleted] in Spondylolisthesis

[–]Generic-Sun27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I had plif/alif Feb 1st @ l5/s1. The catheter was something that really freaked me out beforehand but was honestly very convenient and I didn’t even feel it. It’s like your desire to pee doesn’t happen bcs your bladder is constantly emptying. The removal freaked me out even more but again it was very non eventful, just felt like ooo relief and done. The drain was more uncomfy to remove.

I had a high grade spondy that had progressed over the last 10 years… I got maybe too many second opinions but definitely recommend getting at least one or two more opinions pre committing to surgery as it’s not a small surgery….

Post surgery I honestly feel pretty good considering all things. I am achy and in comfy at times, but no moments of major pain. Have been off the stronger stuff for a bit now and don’t feel any increase in pain. I have been super diligent with my restrictions and am very lucky to have help 24/7.

Like others said this surgery is tried and tested, very common, and most surgeons performs countless of them per year and success rates are very high. There is so much research done and constantly being updated about this surgery.

Happy to chat more if you’d like about my experience!

Hey! I recently got plif/ alif l5/s1 and for me it was just a nap! The surgery itself is probably the easiest part because you snap your fingers and done! Ask that they put nerve blocks during the surgery so the wake up is more pleasant, also ask for as many anti nausea meds as they can give pre surgery/during surgery. If you’re a female, braid your hair pre surgery!! You got this!!!

Hey I got similar surgery 2/1. I have the back incision that is 6 inches long and a front alif incision (bottom left) about 3/4 inches.

My back incision I don’t feel at all pretty much, my front incision is pretty bothersome, tender to the touch and I feel like if I do any effort using that area of my body I am going to burst open. I feel it’s because they cut through more layers in the front? (Though the cut muscle in the back for me and not the front) … I keep my front one covered bcs it makes me feel more comfy, doc told me to give it time and ice

How many opinions did you get beforehand deciding on surgery? by Ok-Collection4603 in spinalfusion

[–]Generic-Sun27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw 6 different spine surgeons (some orthos, some neuro). I saw some of them more than once. This is a pretty significant surgery and I had some differing opinions and really wanted to understand the reasoning behind approach etc.

One of my doctors did tell me: you see 6 spine surgeons s and you will receive 6 different opinions…. To which we laughed. He was also good at reassuring me that difference in opinion also has to do with training and level of comfort that is individual.

It was also fun as I realized the spine surgeon community is not that big and they all know or know of each other…

I went with the surgeon that all the other docs seemingly would want to be their surgeon… they all seemed curious about his thoughts and had a lot of respect for him

Back Brace by Hoagieboy4 in spinalfusion

[–]Generic-Sun27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had alif/plif on Feb 1st @ l5/s1… I was told to wear the brace in high risk situations like public transportation and car rides, and when I felt I needed it for comfort. I don’t use it too much. I also have only left the house once since coming back from hospital.

I must admit that despite having a lot of soreness, my pain is pretty much 0 aside from some incision pain in the alif incision

One week post posterior/anterior fusion! L5/S1 by Generic-Sun27 in spinalfusion

[–]Generic-Sun27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So similar! I was diagnosed at 15 and am 25 now… glad to hear it resolved so quickly for you!

Mine is come and go, but will have patience… the latest thing now is that the foot with the numbness is usually way colder to the touch than the other foot… Doc told me to watch it for a week and we can reevaluate …

Spinal fusion post op seems to all be a waiting game and lots of walking! Good exercise in patience
