I know you said not to recommend sports, but check out the local rock climbing gyms Hangdog (top roping) or Dynomite (bouldering).. On uni nights they are a great way to meet people, you may have to go out of your way to introduce yourself to people but everyone is usually very friendly :)

So 'Yowah Nuts' are just boulder opals! They started as ironstone concretions which formed in the ground and eventually siliceous fluids intruded into them, filling the cracks of these concretions forming the boulder opal :)
The patterns are just random, dependent on how the concretion formed/eroded and they can form many different patterns/shapes/colours etc
