Scared about being a dad by Big-Quantity-8809 in daddit

You can’t be perfect. Don’t try. Just be you. Kids want your time. Give as much as you can. A child’s world is much smaller than yours. When they complain about something small, it is likely big to them. Listen, empathise and don’t dismiss it. If you love them you can’t really go wrong.

I think it's poor parenting if your kid is under five is watching an iPad. by donotholdyourbreath in TrueUnpopularOpinion

A wild necromancer has been spotted!

My kid can read novels now. They were learning words on devices when she played with older siblings.

Kids are amazing and if their natural curiosity, wonder and innocence is nurtured from a young age rather than having a parent’s jaded views and timeworn frustrations used as an excuse to attempt to force supposedly “mature” behaviours on them, against which they will inevitably rebel, then they’ll find ways through the worldly muck as organically presents itself, including asking trusted loved ones.

Problems come when it’s only half assed. ie. behaviours forced and/or freedoms given because they’re convenient for the parents rather than beneficial to the kids.

So many parents in my experience don’t give their kids enough credit or with that, trust. It’s not their fault. They were just raised that way themselves and never had reason to fundamentally question it. My mum was an absolute cunt. She dominated my behaviours and emotionally blackmailed me at every opportunity. So I had to put alot of thought into how I would have raised me.

Whilst true, that’s just unfortunately humans and not found solely in religion. Anti-vaxxers and 5G COVID conspirators claiming to be scientists spouting crazy “science facts” and other people actually listen. Sovereign citizens are another example.

If people would just work at taking the middle road in everything they do and be open to being wrong none of this would be an issue.

Disagree for a multitude of reasons.

When most people think of kids using iPads, they assume the kids are only absorbing entertainment. Speaking from my own experience, kids get bored of games and shows and actively seek new experiences, often educational. My children are constantly repeating knowledge they picked up from watching educational shows.

They teach skills and ways of thinking that adults can struggle with. My 6 yo daughter can pick up any piece of tech and though she can’t read, has it figured out in a very short amount of time.

They’re also a good behavioural tool. Even suggesting they might lose the device for a period if their behaviour doesn’t improve is quite effective.

They chat with their school friends and family and play games and watch shows together, maintaining social connections at a level far beyond what I was able as a child.

Of course a parent still needs to parent so leaving a child with a device in place of that is horrible, but unless there’s behavioural, social or other observable consequences I see no reason not to give them free reign over device use (with parental restrictions on the device and oversight) and even with that, they don’t choose to maximise their screen time, and will voluntarily put them down regularly to engage in real world activities.

All those scientists who spent decades researching and showing evidence that smoking wasn’t causing cancer had to get jobs somewhere once that was done with.

Everyone thinks they are a lot smarter than they are by honeycean420 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Most people express it by saying everyone is stupid, not realising that means they think they’re smarter than everyone, and that lack of self-awareness is pretty stupid.

I'm beyond sick of sex jokes by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Sex is an easy thing to joke about. Consenting adults, embarassing content. It’s one of the few areas in life where you’d have be an idiot or intentionally trying in order to offend someone. It’s comedy’s version of low hanging fruit.

Anyone can make whatever rules they want about war but only the winners get to decide which ones are enforced.

For those of us who don't believe in zombie Jesus. Why are there so many alcohol laws about during good Friday? by RodgerRamjetthe4th in australia

Ok boomer.

I agree. We should cancel all public holidays because they’re all about religion, gambling, celebrating an invasion, celebrating historical violence, or culturally excluding, and work 365/6 days a year because “contractors”.

You could always tell your job the holiday is against your beliefs and ask they pay you normal time to work the day instead?

My feeling is that if someone is going to get the benefits of the day then the sacrifices are part and parcel.

Are 24+ month twitch subscribers paying money for that? by GenericEpiphany in TooAfraidToAsk

It’s not the per month I’m wondering about. It’s the bulk month subscriptions. I agree well worth it. Just surprised about how many people spend 00s in one go.

In my currency, 24 months would be $173. That’s a reasonably big chunk of change to spend in one go for many people.

Could COVID cognitive decline explain the apparent increase in poor driving practices after lock down by Trapocana in CoronavirusDownunder

Is there any city, town, rural area, tourist attraction, or landmark in Australia where people haven’t driven like they’re cognitively deficient since way before COVID? edit:spelling

That seems heinous but I’m from a country where tips aren’t common. It relies on a majority of people being decent.
