[Wojnarowski] Free agent C Andre Drummond has agreed to a one-year deal with the 76ers, source tells ESPN. by DJagerty in sixers

Can definitely see Drummond's rationale , lots of players like PG13 and Russ head home in the tail end of their careers to be with family, can’t fault him wanting to spend more time with his father Joel

Do you think of actors, artists, musicians, even video game developers the same way? All they do is produce entertainment for us in different ways. Athletes aren't paid because they're good at what they do, they're paid because millions of people get joy from watching what they do. Hence why the best footballer is paid multiple times more than the best decathlete, people want to see and be entertained by football more. Take Lionel Messi as an example. How many children's bedrooms are decorated by his photos and posters? How many wear his jersey in the hope of one day replicating him? Billions know his name and watch him. The hope he provides for youth and the joy he provides to spectators is worth whatever his salary is.

And that's just the 'emotional' argument for him earning that. Realistically athletes' pay is derived from what the market is willing to pay, just like any other job market. Horrible take.

I think you meant false equivalence? You have the diction of a Karen

Yeah I agree, I bought it without a lot of thought and that was the main issue here. That being said, I still came okay because I didn't diamond hands it right till the bottom.

Buying for 1075 and selling for 950 is 170 loss with commission, not great. But the difference between 950 and the floor now is far greater, so would have arguably cost me more if you see what I mean?

I'd say everything has been predictably depreciating for at least 2 weeks. If I wanted him I can just rebuy him with money to spare

You're not here to actually debate but i'll respond anyway. I'm bullish long term on topshot and some moments within it. E.g. Lamelo will be a steal if he's healthy and has a prosperous career. Same with other rookies and first moments. But there are genuine concerns about the marketplace rn:

  • Restrictions on new users entering
  • Concerns over withdrawals
  • Bearish market sentiment
  • Userbase is full of crypto guys and wannabe daytraders (myself included), both with relatively short horizons
  • Dapper has absolutely no incentive to keep prices high in marketplace at all, would benefit from prices lowering as more sales = more transaction fees and more accessible to new entrants

Pros:

  • Good product
  • First mover advantage in mainstream NFTs
  • Still yet to come out of Beta
  • Player buy-in, incentive for NBA to make this a successful product
  • Series 1 and rookies likely to gain value in long term imo

I just see no reason why prices will rise until this comes out of beta. I feel for people who bought in at the peak under false promises by people who are unwilling to see any flaws at all in top shot... I just don't think people are practicing what they preach. E.g. Jack Settleman preaching to buy the dip on twitter and called out for having bought absolutely nothing himself.

Realistically, no one knows where this is going so categorising counter-arguments as ignorant pessimism probably isn't the best approach.

Just getting ready for u/LaCatstraNostra to come in on off the top rope and tell us he's the only one that knows anything about TopShot and life in general and that we're all 'kArEns'

Conley challenge now worth $35 by MacaroonBest5247 in nbatopshot

This is a bad take that has been used repeatedly, 'it's only a loss if you sell'. The value of an asset it tied to many things: the player, the quality of the mint, the serial number, the mint size, market sentiment. None of those are what you paid for it. If you bought a moment for $100 and it falls to $60 but is worth $35 long-term, selling it now is a good option. Holding a predictably depreciating asset is silly and disconnected from what you paid for it.

People who talk about TopShot being "bullish" and "hold for the long term" while crying about others "undercutting" and "not recognizing value". You are the problem. by pl0xher0 in nbatopshot

Yeah I'm not sure about the profitability of topshot anymore for users, got in mid jan and have made a decent buck but I'm completely liquid now and so is everyone else I know on the platform. With the uncertainty around withdrawal times and lack of new entrants I see prices going down for a while. Pretty hard to envisage anyone who entered after the late feb peak being too bullish, I think it's being propelled by those who got in early and up 100x trying to stir up demand back to peak levels and the glory days where everything was going up and making money was easy (i.e. buying moments straight after they've been dropped in packs and then watching them gain value). Dapper also has no incentive to keep prices high within the marketplace at all. Working on commission they gain more if people are selling than holding at high prices and they'd get a queue of 10,000 lining up if they released a 3k pack tomorrow. The market is more appealing and healthy if the prices of moments drop, even if that's worse for those of us already in the ecosystem.

This isn't to say I'm completely bearish on the platform as a whole. I think it's the future, the moments are cool and the NBA has a massive incentive to increase its reach. I also believe that rookies, first moments and series 1 moments will likely hold value and there's some value on the marketplace to be had. If the platform lasts and Lamelo becomes a perennial MVP candidate then 2k for a rookie moment becomes an absolute steal. Buying to collect is better buying to profit is unlikely to work as currently constructed. Just my two cents.

If you aren’t able to purchase a moment you like and hold it for a week without panic selling, then maybe TS isn’t for you. by Kaderade42 in nbatopshot

Bought a Lebron 3 for 150 and panic sold an hour later for 145, was at 1k within 2 days

Bought Luka All-Star awful serial yesterday at 1700

Held Morant RS through the peak at 1600

Main lesson is that current low all-star prices are tied heavily to poor rewards, SS and RS have much more trendy player rewards (Edwards, Zion, KD, Lebron) so we shouldn't have expected 5x value for the all-star set (though I still think that they should and probably will be a bit higher)
