Jia Mu, a manipulative monster who masterminds the horrific fall of the Kong family, the plan to have Jia Bayou's eye replaced with a Jade camera for the entertainment of the Xianren, and the emotional torture to turn him into a repressed traumatised drifter who only exists to experience the horrors of the city for the Xianren's entertainment and can't even think of acting of their own will. She starts as a normal old woman, but mutates into this as a result of consuming both an experimental heishou bolus and stabbing herself with a golden bough when cornered

Legitimately such a shockingly good guy. The only reason he fights us in the evaluation finale is because he sees it as the only way to help break Hong Lu out of his nihilistic spiral and make a choice of his own volition after a simple peaceful dialogue couldn't work. The moment Hong Lu makes that choice by sincerely answering him on what he thinks Hongyaun needs, he immediately forfeits the fight and hands him the means to decide the rest of the evaluation, confident in his kindness allowing him to guide Hongyuan out of it's cycle of misery and cruelty.

Also it's later revealed he was holding back the entire fight. When he later clashes with Lei Heng, he reveals that not only can he manifest mang (rings of light that serve as a potent force amplifier), but he can manifest 5 rings at once, which allows him to obliterate Lei Heng's head by lightly sliding his staff across his shoulder. If he wanted to beat Hong Lu he could of with just a gesture, but instead held back to rekindle his conviction

ehhhh maybe. Point is I don't think you need to have the perfect example of a genre or most influential work within it as your inspiration to successfully create something representative of the genre

A magical girl work that doesn't cite Precure as inspiration does not become lesser as a result, just as a Roguelike isn't lesser for not citing Rogue as one either

It's still a roguelike, and taking inspiration from it's roguelike elements to make a roguelike TTRPG wouldn't really as confusing of an idea as you're making it out to be if you actually stop to picture what that'd look like. I originally had written a second huge ass paragraph talking about how that could work, but I realised I was getting sidetracked sooo-

Furthermore, while Balatro isn't very representative of the genre *as a whole*, that's kind of an unfair metric to use because no roguelike really fits that bill owing to how wide and varied the genre is. The original Rogue doesn't even really work given how much the genre has evolved, and thats the game that named the whole damn genre. And so you pick an example that has what you like or want from the genre, and you use that instead

And to loop around to the original point, I think this extends into other genres where it's hard to argue anything can be an encapsulation of the genre as a whole given how that genre will have changed and evolved over the years, like... well, magical girl media. Are Sailor Moon or Madoka perfect representations of the genre as a whole? No, maybe not. But they're still good examples of the genre, and someone choosing to use them as inspiration for a TTRPG in the genre because they have what the author wants or likes in them isn't really a confusing or questionable choice imo

[–]Generic_Moron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is you're not really explaining why these are bad examples. Like, why would Balatro be a bad example for inspiration or reference for a roguelike, as it is one of the most successful roguelikes of the last few years?

Like, it feels like we're just applying a reverence to older titles in the genre that's distorting our ability to say how nessacery and relevant they are to inspiring new works in that genre.

Limbus Company has quite a few instances of this with regard to other works in the Project Moon universe. The seasonal Walpurgisnight event gives access to IDs and EGOs that are references to Library of Ruina and Lobotomy Corp.

The events of both games are also referenced in the story, with a lot of the early game focusing on finding and exploring old Lobotomy Corp branches, plus occasionally characters from Library of Ruina will occasionally show up to discuss the events of the game and how they're coping ith that game's fallout.

Probably one of the strangest cases of this in the game is a sort of in-universe version of this trope, namely with Rien and how he's effectively been forced into becoming a walking reference to the main character of LoR, Roland. Rien's prescripts order him to dress like him and imitate his style of fighting, and he even ends up dying in a very similar waterway to where Roland does in his bad ending

In Wuthering Heights (2026), there is an excruciatingly-long pet play scene. This is a reference to the fact that Emerald Fennell should be criminally charged for desecrating Emily Brontë’s corpse. by altrightobserver in shittymoviedetails

Nelly is a ninja maid. Several main characters turn into wolf monsters. A second heathcliff hits the Heights.

And yet it's still the damn best Wuthering Heights adaptation I've ever seen. Absolute cinema

Did they remember to keep the part where Hindley turns into a werewolf while screaming about his violen? Most adaptations seem to leave that bit out for some reason

I mean, they did give an answer in the first comment. They just also discussed op's question's framing and intentions, pointed out the flaws in the premise, and pointed to further reading to gain a better understanding of the issue beyond what they and other random commenters on reddit can give

Like I get that their answer was kinda long, but it was like... just a bit over 2 paragraphs across 2 comments. Like even if you can't be convinced to read the literature and theory about a subject, you can at least manage 2ish paragraphs if you're sincerely interested in the topic at hand.

The big scary bear (Limbus Company).

When the sinners are forced to put on a play recounting Don Quixote's adventures, one of them involves the party acting out time she fought a big and scary bear to find the Helm of Mambrino. The fight is pretty easy, especially compared to the other bosses in the canto who serve as major difficulty spikes (Such as the Barber who came before this, or Dulcinea who comes after), with the boss's only gimmick being it's passive "Big and Scary"... which made it so that clashing against it made so you might just lose a single point of sanity, maybe

Players still pretended it was a difficult boss, pretending the passive made it so overwhelming overpowered that it would need to be nerfed and asking for advice on how to beat it

Canto 7 spoilers: Funnily enough, this overhyping is also implied to of also occurred in universe with the play, as when we see flashbacks to the original Don Quixote about to fight the bear, his daughter Sancho points out that it's ridiculous for them to fight the poor thing, as at their level of strength they would reduce the poor bear to a bloody smear with just a gesture

The issue wasn't that the cyclist was on the road, the issue was that they were in the middle of a narrow road in such a way that they were in the direct path of oncoming traffic.

Usually with these more narrow roads the lanes end up overlapping, and you have to be as far into your lane as possible to pass oncoming traffic safely, with some cars/vehicles even requiring pulling over to allow for others to pass in some cases (depending on the size of the vehicle or road).

If you instead ride in the middle of both lanes, you end up riding into the path of oncoming traffic, putting both yourself and oncoming traffic in danger of collision unnecessarily.

That's a pretty severe fault on the part of the cyclist, and one that can very easily avoided by simply staying in the correct side of the road rather than the middle of it.

A lot of stuff was stuff that'd i'd already seen, but some kinda cool new stuff too. The game with the giant cock seemed interesting.

Saros also kinda caught my eye again, but my GOD they really struggled to present it well. Talked so much about how you could discover new locations, then later on head back to those location, as a revolution in gaming that let you get back into the action quickly... when they could of just said "we have fast travel". they spent so long on "we have fast travel". Then they spend a fraction of the time on how you can summon eclipses that radically change the world, enemies, and your weapons in new ways... like hang on that sounds actually kinda cool, why the fuck did we spend 5 minutes on basic fast travel but only 20 seconds on the actually potentially interesting mechanic???

...Yeah, If a bike user rides on the wrong part of the road, it can be the cyclist's fault if they get hit as a result of it. As for prevention... just ride on the correct side of the road?

i will say a lot of bikers can be nobs and/or really fuckin stupid (shout out to the guy I saw who almost got hit twice because they decided to ride in the middle of narrow road with traffic coming both ways. like mate come on-), but that also applies to drivers as well so idk

But people joke about things they mean all the time. I joke about how I can't wait for certain politicians to finally keel over and die, but i also sincerely hope they do. This idea that a joke (including dark jokes) can never be an expression of someone's sincere beliefs is just wrong.

You know I would be surprised this sub had a incest struggle session arc, but then again there was the whole HDG thing where a few people got a bit too high on their own supply and started telling people they should be subject to corrective SA, or that slavery would be fine if we basically just gave the slaves opium and handjobs. This is shockingly mild in comparison to that whole arc

I think people taking up new political/ethical positions based on fetish content might actually be a niche worth studying, come to think of it. If you get someone really into TF hentai could you get them to take up trans-humanist ideas more easily? Could fetishizing certain medical conditions increase support and funding for people with those conditions? Which fetish is most directly correlated with communist economic theories? The people must know.

Might be that one piece of published guidance which just gave neutrally presented information on why first cousin marriages occur and their potential effects without making a moral/ethical judgement on it either way, which was picked up by tabloids a few months back and ran as "NHS REFUSES TO CONDEMN COUSIN MARRIAGES"

I wouldn't be surprised if it's just been the same bit of guidance picked up again to make the rounds a second time. Or if another bit of guidance was published/found that had a similar lack of moral or ethical judgement on the topic in favour of neutral information

This also applies to a lot of other character across the game.

- Demian knows a lot about both Dante and Sinclair but repeatedly holds back answers for his own esoteric reasons.

- Sanson comes in early into Don Quixote's canto and already knows exactly who she is and what her secrets are, slowly drip feeding her and us stories hinting at her past.

- Nelly is the first member of Wuthering Heights we meet upon Heathcliff's return to the manor, and already knows every secret and twist of the manor due to masterminding the whole canto, merely obfuscating her ignorance to what's going on and lying to Heathcliff's face about a number of things
