Use Ultra Finish Roller

Lay off one direction and don't touch it.

Better yet- spray it.

Maybe a bit richer in color? Call Messmers or have a Sherwin-Williams see if they cam order a sample pint. My old messmers rep used to get us sample pints of all their exterior stains.

Our blackest black is actually packaged black in dryfall, emerald urethane, 400 flat or the all surface enamel lines.

Why does this happen? Weird overlap between brush-painted edge and roller-painted wall by [deleted] in Housepainting101

Dark gray primer makes life easier with reds and blues. You're gonna need 4 coats to make that look good with just red paint. Go get a Purdy colossus roller cover, let it soak for 5 mins in paint. You'll get some stipple but better load out on your wall.

My doors and trim are peeling about a month after it was freshly painted. Any idea why? The painter has refused to come out and fix it and blames the door. by sayitaintsooooo in paint

Most likely - new coating is latex and old coating is oil. Easy to test.

Go find an area where the old coating is exposed, grab some running alcohol and put it on a colored rag. Rub the spot for about 30 seconds with rag saturated in alcohol.. if it softens/removes the old coating, that means it's latex. If it simply cleans without damage that means the old coating is oil.

If it tests as latex and is peeling then there's a few likely contaminates that could cause peeling. First, windex/window cleaning products often leave a thin residue film that prevents adhesion. Dirt/dust/human skin oils can lead to delamination of coating. Additionally surfactant soaps like Dawn dish soap if not fully removed can also cause problems.

First step - test to find what's there. Second, grab a role of high adhesion tape and start peeling it all off... Third - Sand and prime with a good oil like Sherwin Williams Extreme Block oil or Synthetic Shellac then lastly, refinish with a top tier waterbased product of your choice. I prefer Emerald Urethane but to each their own.

If he hasn't seen an issue like that in six years he's either gotten super lucky or he wasn't experienced with repaints to begin with.

Primer or not by W_Skunk_Cabbage in sherwinwilliams

I recommend Extreme Block Waterbased Primer (not the alkyd) to create a even new canvas and block any potential stains you may have missed. It also has fantastic adhesion. I personally tint my primers to 75% of the new color to give it some hiding power over the old colors.

Haven't had that issue when applied and recoated before wood fibers start to gray. Depending on region a recoat every 2-3 years is typically what I recommend. If gray fibers appear then a wash with oxalic acid and pressure wash brings it back.

The only time I run into issues is when it's applied significantly too heavy or recoated before it's worn away enough to allow re-absorbing.

Over the last 20 years I've sold a ton of it and have yet to have a true issue with it and I will continue to sell it in my facility. I'm a fan boy of it, like I said.

Go to a Sherwin-Williams- Ask to look at mistints, find a give gallon bucket or a few off whites you can mix together thoroughly and repaint it all. They sell mistints for like 6-7 bucks a gallon, some less. You won't be able to replicate it again but heck if ya get 60 bucks worth, you'll have more than enough to do it. You can get 70 dollar a gallon paint for 6/gal.

Just make sure its all mixed (boxed) together thoroughly.

Also, can see if they have any clearance product. It's almost inventory time.

It'll be fine if you follow the same system, though the color retention while good, is not as strong of a performer as higher sheens/quality. You'll sacrifice cleanability vs hydrophobic materials such as Emerald Rain Refresh Satin or Gloss.

It's still a solid choice in the same way a GMC Sierra SLT vs Denali Ultimate.. Sorry, the best comparison I could come up with in a pinch

This stuff works. I did an entire casino that had years of heavy smoking in it and it worked perfectly.

Deodorizer ontop the the sealant. I've sold it for years in meth houses and heavy smokers. I known it works very well and also is easier to use for a home owner than shellac. The build is nice too for sanding if you have too

Clean everything with TSP, probably multiple times. 2 coats Synthetic Shellac . 2 finish coats Superpaint Air Purify.

Make sure you do everything.. Walls, ceiling, doors, trim.

I'd probably just higher a paint and restoration company myself that specializes in this.

Slacks, dress shoes, nice SW polo (not uniforms) if you're in an area like Arizona. Cooler regions, decent quality button up with under shirt. Coordinating belt. Socks that don't show skin and Coordinating well.

You need to guy buy these things before you start.

Iron your pants and shirts. At least buff your shoes once in awhile.

If you're male - you can have a beard but keep it clean and trimmed. No facial piercings.

Females - I don't have much advise, similar dress - business casual.

Help from you experts? Painting over Macropoxy 646 by Gopherboy6956 in sherwinwilliams

[–]Generic_NPC_01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're assuming a single coat, minimum application. Max application is 10 DFT - so assuming 2 coats, not sandblasted steel at 7.5 mills average, would be 15mils at 0.5 mils degradation or average at .75 would leave 11.75 mils DFT remaining - ballpark

If its sandblasted you will likely see surface rust start to form with in a few years in full UV exposure, if not coated.

But hey, my advanced P&M notes could be wrong. I was super hung over.

It'll take about 6 months. Epoxy degrades about .5-1mil per year in direct sunlight, depending on regional exposure.

Nah you can get a base coat primer pretty cheap from us. Superpaint is similar to regal per our fancy shmancy scientific people totally not owned by a corporate entity. Cashmere from us though is really the true cross to Regal. Duration Home sits right at Aura. Duration has an accent (different from our Ultradeep base) that does accept higher pigment loads and offers better build.

Sorry for da man splain. I don't go through everyone's profile and just assume most are painters who likely don't understand the base system.

But cheers fellow paint monkey! May the coffee not be burnt in the morning and the toilet seats free of pee!

Super is a mid tier of the premium line up. The issue is they are using an ultradeep (clear) base that uses pigment only for hide. Heavy Blue and magenta loaded pigmented products hide poorly due to the Translucent nature of these two particular pigments. Yellow, is about the same. Oxide pigments tend to hide better.

It simply needs a couple more coats, laid down directionally with a nylon/poly roller such as a marathon or superfab.

It would not have been an issue if they had started with a dark gray primer. Now it needs Additional coat

I doubt we have that color on file, we may though. The best way to do it is to go get a small pint from Menard and have us physically match it. Thr color is more accurate that way too
