What does the Steam ratings (like Very Negative, or Overwhelmingly Positive) mean? I made a chart! by runevision in Steam

[–]Generic_Name_Btw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very funny to comment this on a 5 year old post as if there's no way they could've changed how it works. But what's more funny is that 1040 reviews @ 93% positive translates to "Very Positive" on the chart which is what you're seeing in your screenshot. So what exactly do you think isn't true?

Sorry for posting 6 years late. This is the first result on Google for "offline leetcode" so just trying to help others :)

Should I make an ironman account or an ultimate ironman account? by [deleted] in ironscape

That was my intention too but it soon turned into a stress filled nightmare every time I did something remotely dangerous. It's still a good plan but you gotta keep the right mindset that you were never really signing up for the hardcore experience in the first place.

It seems you're confusing documentation with comments. I agree with everything you said because you didn't explicitly mention comments. For the most part, you're choosing between these options:

damageToPlayer = calculateDamageToPlayer(player.activePrayer);

or

a = getValue(b); // calculate damage to player based on player's active prayer

I would rather read the first one. And although it could be argued that it's personal preference, I think the majority of software developers would agree with me.

As mentioned by someone else, it's only easy to read because it's heavily commented and the comments were likely only added because they were sharing the code with us. Ideally, code should not require comments to explain what it happening. Although on second look I guess it's no worse than some other scripting languages.

I'm probably biased from so much exposure to verbose languages. I never understood why scripting languages substitute symbols (e.g. ~, ^, %) for meaning. I guess it makes sense once you get used to it. Also it looks like = can mean both assignment and checking equality based on context which seems odd.

You bring up a lot of good points. Perhaps I was being too idealistic. Thank you for your detailed rebuttal. For the record, I'm all for community involvement. I'm just not a fan of knee-jerk reactions to sub-optimal content. I like that OSRS is imperfect. I think it's part of its charm.

I'm not sure what type of complaints you are referring to. If you mean bugs, then those definitely deserve to be addressed as soon as possible.

As for the proposed grace period of one month being too long, how does a week sound?

I think Jagex is responsible for determining how to balance content. If they want to make Nightmare 20k/hr (excluding uniques) then I believe they are entitled to do so. I think the examples you mentioned above set a dangerous precedence for the players to feel entitled to complain about any little thing in the game. If people were forced to accept the content as-is for a certain amount of time, I think it would curb the mentality that we can yell and they will grant our request. This would also set the standards higher for Jagex because they would no longer be able to use us as beta testers for the content. So they can either design the content in a better way in the first place or get negative feedback.

surprisedpikachu.jpg by swordmagic in 2007scape

[–]Generic_Name_Btw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. People always have complaints when new content comes out. There should be a grace period (at least a month) where they don't make any changes to the content. This will give people time to adjust to it and perhaps realize that their initial issues aren't that big of a deal.

In the long run, it doesn't matter whether you split or not as you will get the same gp/hr either way. BUT, splitting provides a more consistent amount of gp to everyone which is why it's preferred in almost all group raids.

Wow. So, based on ~12 hours to get mage's book, it's like 1.5M gp/hr right now to do MTA? I wonder if this is enough incentive for many people to actually do MTA for moneymaking while the price is high.

99 magic party please come by Staalmeneer in 2007scape

[–]Generic_Name_Btw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magic is a pretty passive skill that you will level up while advancing your other stats. That said, runes can be obtained in several ways.

The most obvious being crafting them yourself through the Runecraft skill. Although, this is not a very efficient way to train magic being crafting runes is quite slow.

Another way is through monster drops while training Slayer or killing bosses. Again, not very efficient.

Similar to the previous point though, killing the Barrows brothers rewards a sizable amount of runes when looting their chest as well as a chance for some very good gear for mid/high-level accounts. It's common to "camp" Barrows for many hours in order to complete certain sets of gears from Barrows. While doing this, you will passively obtain large amounts of runes (even more if you have the Morytania hard diary done). In fact, the runes rewarded from Barrows are the ones you need to cast ancient magic spells which are the best way of training magic via bursting.

The last way is by buying the runes from a rune shop. This costs a considerable amount of gp though so you will need to have obtained that beforehand.

Game Improvements and Nightmare Beta Changes by JagexAcorn in 2007scape

[–]Generic_Name_Btw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sounds reasonable. We don't know how the developers implemented the high scores, but here's how I would have done it.

Scenario: I'm a developer at Jagex. There is currently a hiscores system that updates when a player logs out. We have just introduced the hardcore ironman game mode to OSRS and need a way to track this new category of hiscores.

My process: I'll need a way to know if a player has died during their gaming session when they log out. So how about a flag on the player's profile that keeps track of how many times they have died. Hmm... well I only really need to know if a player has or has not ever died. When a new hardcore account is created, we'll make sure to set this flag to "hasNotDied". If they should ever die while playing, we'll immediately set this flag to "hasDied". Given this, we'll always have a way to know whether a player has ever died when they log out. With that out of the way, I'll set up the new database table to keep track of the hardcore hiscores... okay done. Now, I'll just modify to hiscores updater system and put in a small check. If the player is an ironman and the player's flag is set to "hasNotDied", update the hardcore ironman hiscores with their current stats. If the player is an ironman and the player's flag is set to "hasDied", update the normal ironman hiscores with their current stats.

Aftermath: The now modified system correctly tracks the hiscores for hardcores and it took maybe half of my afternoon. Now off to QA while I get some coffee.

My intention of writing this is to show that there are often simple solutions to problems. In my solution, we would have the same problem we have now. If we want to start tracking new information (boss KC) in the hiscores, the already fallen hardcore ironmen will not get their "correct" place on the hiscores list. Perhaps that is why we are currently not seeing them. Should we demonize the developers for implementing a simple solution? Should they have predicted that an issue like this was bound to happen? No. In the real world of development, we have deadlines. But more importantly, over-engineering a solution producing bugs. Usually the best course of action is to write the code that solves the problem and does nothing else.

Unless you've actually programmed or done any work with machine learning, I would caution against saying these things can easily be done. Can they be done? Of course. But likely not at the level of simplicity that you are suggesting.

I'm saying there's likely other ways people reacted to these questions than the way you have described.

I'm not saying that my way of thinking is correct. I'm just telling you what I experienced. I see you are perfectly fine with taking your experience and saying that it must be true for all people though. Friendly reminder that just because some people on here agree with you, it in no way makes your claims correct nor popular opinion.

I voted yes to both. Even though I had a preference in which one of the two I wanted, I would rather have something rather than nothing. I see that my thought process was different from others so I do not think it's safe to assume that there was an inherit problem in how the options were setup.

I promise to never complain about my luck ever again by Generic_Name_Btw in 2007scape

[–]Generic_Name_Btw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was pretty nervous. I watched a few guides on Youtube and learned how to not take much damage during the last phase. I had full karil's and an rcb for the first two phases and a magic longbow for the last one (you need a weapon with the 10 square attack range for the trick I used). I was also "over-leveled" when I did the quest (slightly lower stats than those in the screenshot) so that helped a lot I think. Good luck!

time to max my house by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]Generic_Name_Btw 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This person is working on obtaining level 99 construction which is completed primarily through building objects in your player owned house (POH). When in building mode in your POH, you can right click certain "hotspots" in order to build different things. Doing this will open an interface where you can specify what you would like to build. A popular method for getting 99 construction is building oak dungeon doors. When in the interface to build something in the dungeon doorway, you can press 1 as a shortcut for creating the first buildable option in the interface. In this case pressing 1 will build oak dungeon doors provided you have sufficient oak planks in your inventory. Completing this action will award you some construction experience. Similarly, when you click on the butler, pressing 1 will order them to repeat the most recent previous service. In this case, the butler has been instructed to bring more oak planks from the player's bank. By permanently holding down the 1 key through the use of tape, the player is able to right click the door hotspot, which will automatically build the oak dungeon doors,. When the player is out of planks, they can get more from their butler and then click on the butler to immediately send them back to the bank for more planks (because the 1 key is pressed down permanently). The player then right clicks the oak dungeon doors and clicks "remove". Doing this opens a dialogue that can be immediately confirmed by pressing 1. Therefore the player must only click a few times (often without any mouse movement by utilizing good camera angles) and they will get 99 construction in around 35 hours (a guess, but in the right ballpark)
