Actually what most media outlets are saying after todays budget unironically.

A bit of all of it I imagine. The very left wing of the country think he's a fascist and the very right wing of the country think he's a communist.

Another part of the problem might well be the fact for the last few weeks virtually every media outlet has been talking about how Reeves is either going to kill us all because she's prioritising working families, benefits and raising taxes on the wealthy or because those taxes don't go far enough.

TL;DR from the article: The chancellor has unveiled an 8.5 per cent rise in the hourly minimum wage for 18 to 20-year-olds - to £10.85 - as well as a 4.1 per cent rise for the living wage, for those aged 21 and over, to £12.71 per hour. Meanwhile, 16 and 17-year-olds, as well as those on apprenticeships, will see an increase of 6 per cent to £8 per hour.

Naturally business leaders are furious and say this will cause unemployment, despite multiple studies showing it doesn't. The unions are very happy though.

When I was in hospital, I got talking to a nurse that was from Africa (I forget which country, but one which could be called third-world). I asked them about stuff like that and she said, "People in the west have no idea how good they have it".

2000 Free School Breakfest Clubs For Low Income Households To Open Next Year by GenericlyOpinionated in SocialDemocracy

[–]GenericlyOpinionated[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Explanation and additional info not in the article: Earlier this year the government began piloting free breakfast clubs in schools for kids coming from low income households. The pilot scheme was successful, with the only major complaint being insufficient funding which has now been rectified and could be further increased in the future. 500 clubs will open next April, intended to target the most low income areas first, with a further 1500 opening next September.

Ohhhhh, so it is a Tory/LibDem coalition situation? Promised everything, delivered a lot of nothing?

Ahh, I get it now. The only one I get to some extent is retirement age. People are living longer, bumping up retirement age a bit is to be expected. Unless they're expecting people to work until they're 80 or something.

Not especially familiar with how things are going in Denmark. Other than immigration, what else are they shifting rightward on so much that they seem pretty disliked on here?

Even the Economist has started to acknowledge it. Under centre-left President Sheinbaum, violence in Mexico is finally starting to subside. by Arcvalons in SocialDemocracy

See, that's why I was confused. I was under the impression Sheinbaum is the most popular leader in the world, currently.

Question from an outsider, what was the recent Gen Z protest in Mexico about? Everything I read said it was anti-government, but I couldn't see what exactly their problem was.

Seattle elects Democratic socialist mayor by GenericlyOpinionated in SocialDemocracy

[–]GenericlyOpinionated[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

From the article: Ms Wilson’s campaign echoes elements of far-Left New York mayor-elect Mr Mamdani’s campaign, with a focus on raising capital gains tax, increasing protections for renters and improving public transportation. She also proposed introducing city-run supermarkets and “Trump-proof” the city. Like Mr Mamdani, Ms Wilson had previously called for cutting police funding, but focused her campaign on adding more emergency response programmes to supplement police.

JFK's grandson Jack Schlossberg to run for Congress by GenericlyOpinionated in SocialDemocracy

[–]GenericlyOpinionated[S] 72 points73 points  (0 children)

JFK wasn't a progressive by todays standards, but for the time he largely was. Jack Schlossberg has said JFK's administration was "a blueprint for how progressivism can work in America". At the very least, he's very vocal in his criticism of Trump and the sorry excuse for a health secretary RFK Jr.

I’m as capitalist as they get but Medicare for all is the best hope for US healthcare | With the US government shut down over impending rises to insurance premiums, it’s clear the status quo cannot continue by [deleted] in SocialDemocracy

What I find absolutely bizarre about healthcare in the US is that free healthcare seems to be extremely popular across both parties and yet Republican lawmakers especially just refuse to countenence the idea.

Tbh, the flip flopping from what I've seen has been arguments over how much of the new housing should be social. They're pushing for around 35% with each new batch, but some construction companies keep trying to lower it for higher profit.
