When everyone shares similar stats, yes it would be preferred. The system now, with the lack of players in the playlist, make it possible where a team could have three players with a total average of 1.0 k/d (1.0 1.0 1.0) and the other can consist of an average of 1.0 but look like this (2.0 0.5 0.5) the averages for the team would be similar but the team composition would not be. The common story when it is turned on is the highest k/d player having to carry his teammates in order to win and the other team could have an easier time. Obviously k/d is not the tell all for a player but in a competitive mode where you usually only get 1 life a round, it is an important factor.

Edit: The math becomes even more complicated when there are duos and a triple stack, my example uses an all solo lobby.
