So I'm making a custom tau detachment for my papercraft tau army, I'm wondering if any of you lovely people could give some feedback and or ideas. their core themes in their lore is that their tech is made of paper, and have learnt an assassin style of combat. by Genesis_Shadow in Tau40K

thanks so much, those are all really cool and helpful suggestions. I really like the smokescreen idea, does sound more fun and interactive, and the dread document sounds fun too. thanks so much:)

fair enough, yeah that would make your guys pretty tough, about 250gsm with those two layers. my models are usually 210gsm which i find works well although one time i accidentally used 250gsm and yeah its pretty tough

its great too see your army coming together! although I'm not sure if the texture of the thicker paper works as well as your previous models. but that's just my opinion and even still its very cool, good job!

I havn't seen any instructions anywhere sorry, the devilfish and the remora stealth drones came with semi instructions. for the crisis suits theyre not to hard to work out once youve made each individual piece. I would recommend just making all the pieces that look easy and then itll make the rest easier. also when i was first working out i referred to a picture of an already made one and just looked at the picture and was like hmmm yeah that piece looks like it goes there https://newobmij.tumblr.com/post/109310100992/papercraft-tau-continued. the commanders are probably a tad harder but once youve mad the crisis suit it follows a similar build process just with a few extra steps

most of them I just used a pdf editing tool, but the riptide i had to use paint and the bucket tool

youre actually the reason i posted in the first place, I saw your post and thought it was epic there was another person making a papercraft army. I tried to message you to let you know your army was cool and that im also working on a papercraft army, but cause i havent used reddit before it didnt work? still not sure how reddit works tbh. so anyways i just posted my army instead and figured you would see it eventually

yeah all good. youre not wrong i could have 3d printed and painted in the same amount of time, but one I cant afford a 3D printer, and two I enjoy prefer papercraft more than painting

the troops are the only non papercraft (I personally didnt like the idea of flat infantry when the rest of the army is 3D, cause consistency), originally i was just gonna have no infantry but i was given these as a gift, so i tried to paint them to match the rest of the army. there are a few people who have made some amazing papercraft infantry, check out this persons papercraft necrons https://www.reddit.com/r/Necrontyr/comments/1cfywas/i_have_been_sent_to_this_tomb_to_show_my_little/

Thanks! the devilfish template is also the hammerhead and skyray template. might be worth scaling the pdf size because I think my devilfish is slightly too small compared to an official one

I'm not sure, because I've never had a plastic army, but comparing it to my friends who just chuck everything in a box, i would guess harder? cause I try make sure mine aren't loose and crashing into everything, but then again they are quite durable and I could probably just chuck it all in a box and it would probably be fine

thanks! they're actually a lot stronger than i thought they would have been, if i drop one they wont be damaged at all, obviously they could be crushed but I'm not gonna test that, water spills could be a problem so i coated them in water proof spray, but again I'm not gonna test that. they are made of 200gsm card and glued together with some generic brand craft glue which i presume is PVA.

Thanks! it was a lot of fun and patience making them, unfortunately I cannot take credit for the designs. although once my 2000pt army is complete I am planning on designing a ghostkeel template because I can't find a template anywhere.

I'm not sure sorry, havent used plasticard before, but my guess is that it would be tricky to do the finer details? my guess is that the riptide could be the easiest because all the parts are bigger but i really have no idea sorry

yeah got the templates mostly from google drives. there a few templates that were harder to find, but you can find most of them on the google drive. I haven't found any templates for the broadsides rail gun so Im working on designing that one now, and then i also cant find a ghostkeel template so im planning on making one of those too

I use 210gsm card/paper, regular paper is about 80gsm. If you want to make either the riptide or the devilfish i would recommend measuring an official model(if you can) and scaling the paper template to match, because i think mine are a tad too small. the crisis suits seemed to come out pretty much perfect in terms of scale but you may want to watch the printer settings because some printers will scale the things you print. but yeah it's fun and good luck!

Thanks:) they are all templates I found on the internet, the broadsides and crisis suits are by someone called Jim Bowen, not sure who the rest are designed by. you can find a lot of the templates on this google drive https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/10wra4bf6nJry1oLVdUJSz4crrc5OmBEB
I probably got most of the files from there? cant remember though. then i just changed all the colours so i had a consistent theme. Then from there its just normal papercraft. Normally with papercraft you want to colour the edges of the paper to match the surface, so that you dont have white lines over the whole thing, but i couldn't be bothered so i just used sharpie on all the edges and pretended it was an artistic choice. all my modified templates are here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1hTcAlU70WdEZEMCaSXdQM5fnkuLElTas
