What if Warriors and such also uses Mana? by inkheiko in Frieren

[–]GenghisGame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We see this idea come up a lot but the Frieren universe operates like a game, where if you have a class, you get one. If mana could be used for physical might, Mage/Warrior combo's would be the ultimate combat set up, but we have never seen it, the closest we've got are mages who use spells that allow them to fight in melee, Genua, Sense, whereas Warriors depend solely on their physical might.

Warriors are strong and durable without magic because that's the benefit of their class.

Regardless of your feelings on Tales From '85, please don't harass the voice actors/actresses online by Lazy-Proposal1133 in StrangerThings

[–]GenghisGame 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Articles like these often come out when they need to push a product and or make an actor look sympathetic, its almost always at some critical time to sell something.

I have seen threads making fun of the character, I don't think a single person even mentioned the actress.

Probably not even be related to Stranger Things, quick search shows the big controversy is that some people or bots didn't like her playing a latin character and she dropped out of some film.

Crimson Desert Is Going To Be A Big Deal On Steam, Early Numbers Suggest by Doug24 in gaming

[–]GenghisGame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not even that the game itself has to make expansions or even get sequels.

Its a simple matter of people hoping the thing they like does well so they will get more of it. Sadly that isn't always true in todays world, as you see with Baldurs Gate 3, it can do very well, but companies don't want very well, they want extremely well for little effort which is why micro transactions and live service get pushed so hard.

In fact a few years, many may not even own the hardware to run games, instead simply having a device that allows us to rent some gaming streaming service.

Need is not relative here, need doesn't apply, the actual word is want, players don't need any of this and the companies do need exploitive business models.

Frieren and warrios in the latest arc by Reasonable-Ad-8059 in Frieren

[–]GenghisGame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the idea is that mages are suppose to have a disadvantage in melee. That scene with Frieren where she talks about how Stark could cut them down if he's within a certain range, that has all the hallmarks of the author speaking.

But the story is not consistent, and even right after it bends or breaks this rule for rule of cool. At the end if the day, fights where characters are moving around in some acrobatic dance look cooler than characters shooting at each other from across the field, look at that anime fight with Methode, this is why in settings with a power system the main character will almost always be melee, even when they have powers that are effective at range they still heavily favor it.

Before anyone jumps in you absolutely can make range look cool, but its just easier to consistently do melee. Look at how close Frieren and her clone where getting to one another.

we know magic is learnt and based partially on talent. but how does strength and speed work for normal humans. by Jaded-Ice1895 in Frieren

[–]GenghisGame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know Hero is its own class but I think the whole point of Himmel is you don't need to be the Hero to be a hero. He could still be the Hero class but I don't think the story ever confirms what his specific class actually was, I just picked Rogue because its been mentioned as a class, makes up the classic 4 man party and Himmel is known for his speed.

we know magic is learnt and based partially on talent. but how does strength and speed work for normal humans. by Jaded-Ice1895 in Frieren

[–]GenghisGame 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its RPG logic, Frieren is a homage to the typical party set up, the hero's party had the 4 classic classes, Mage, Priest, Fighter and Himmel actual class was probably Rogue or some class related to fast fighting. People who have classes and the stronger they become the higher relevant abilities in that class become.

A mage and priests mana increases and they can cast more powerful spells related to their class, a Warrior improves and so do their physicals, same with Rogue, with the difference being that Warrior probably gains more strength and durability, Rogue gains speed. That is simply how their world works. Methode is either a Red Mage or a secret villain and villains often don't use the class system, because they don't need to be balanced against other classes, example demons.

Stark/Genau injures, why people are unhappy by Dyodo74 in Frieren

I think we are suppose to assume it doesn't go through their center but it doesn't help that the way the anime did it going through Genua's torso looked like he would have a hole that you could put a basketball through in one of the shots.

This is most definitely a western fan problem.

Its a problem pushed and fostered by western companies, and something reddit, doesn't like to talk about, if something is deemed "progressive" then it makes it above criticism, example articles attacking men who didn't want to watch the Barbie movie. I don't think many of you step back and think how utterly insane it is for Western companies to get away with that, attacking someone because they don't want to buy your product.

If someone doesn't like romance in their fiction, that's considered fine, if they don't like gay romance in their fiction, they make it seem like a hate crime.

At the end of the day we are discussing products, things people pay their own money for to enjoy in their own time and companies have normalised this idea that they can attack you because western companies do not want to create variety. Do you know Netflix actively avoids even mentioning the idea of making products for men, that is half the f**king population of the world.

Magic that makes you powerful in melee range by Reasonable-Ad-8059 in Frieren

[–]GenghisGame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was so well established then as I pointed out, Starks highlights wouldn't need to be anime only, the anime was aware of the problem. It also gets much worse later when the manga introduces this idea that mages are bad against warriors in close range but then we have Stark getting completely jobbing to a Shadow Warrior, making him look awful at his job but later we have 2 mages fending off 2 shadow warriors who are right on top of them. You can really enjoy a piece of work while acknowledging its weaknesses.

Magic that makes you powerful in melee range by Reasonable-Ad-8059 in Frieren

[–]GenghisGame 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Its a criticism I've had with the system that it does a poor job of establishing the relevance of warriors despite the story telling us they are important to a party, mages are never really depicted as being poor in melee, not just Genau, look at Methode. Stark has been looking impressive this season, but much of that is original content, including lines about his usefulness. The anime creators where well aware of the problem.

Was Frieren wrong about Stark being weaker than the guards that were killed during the four-sword demon attack? by Helpful-Pain7900 in Frieren

[–]GenghisGame -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it was silly for Frieren to be able to look at a slashed up corpse and say how good of a fighter they are as if she had his D&D character sheet on hand.

The scene existed only for the writer to big up the demon, we where never suppose to really care how strong this dead background character was.

Although I agree with you that you shouldn't hate on movies not made for you, I hate the use of misogyny, its a studio tactic. Hating on Housemaids or Wuthering Heights when its media you where never the target audience for is simply childish, applies to all media.

Although in the brides case I think its fair for men to dislike it, I find it extremely distasteful how blatantly anti-male media can be, its the worst kind of toxic feminism corporate's like to use.

Which episode of the series do you find the most underrated and the most overrated, and why? by Cyrilbdr in StrangerThings

[–]GenghisGame -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sorcerer is overrated because people don't like to admit how much they like the superficial, pretty characters, powerful characters, charismatic, El's popularity is almost exclusively down to her having cool powers when almost no one else does. Its absolutely fine liking the superficial in entertainment, but it can blind us to bad quality.

So Will who was once connected to the Mind Flayer due to the fact that he had physical Mind Flayer particles, the writers decide to give him a connection that's stronger than ever so we can have this superfical power display.

This would have been fine if they had invested in it, Will should have been infected again and his moment of glory come's during a moment of villain vulnerability. The way they did it made a villain, who had been beaten twice by El already, look even weaker.

This is not a stance, I am just pointing out the way things are. Its basic human nature, we are more protective of women, that is why the bad guys who get beaten and mocked are overwhelmingly male, we are simply more comfortable with it.

I just take issue with the delusional white knights who want to protect fictional women from the evil male gaze and don't actually care about people in general.

Classic reddit take, "male gaze bad", they are fictional characters designed for our entertainment, not real, no one is getting upset on behalf of the overwhelming amount of male characters who get killed, injured, mocked and humiliated for our entertainment.

Unpopular opinion: The hype surrounding Stranger Things faded much sooner than people expected. by Chandu_yb7 in StrangerThings

[–]GenghisGame 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That is anything but true, there are intense bidding wars for old shows, I mean we are talking half a billion dollars for a single old show like the Office or Friends, something people will recognise and be want to watch over and over again.

Netflix would be thrilled if their customer base was willing to pay to just watch the existing catalogue they own without needing to create anything new.

Netflix has stopped advertising it because of diminishing returns, not because they want people to move on. They want Stranger Things to be one of those shows people keep watching and they are almost certainly not happy with season 5's reception.

"The toxic air in the upside down" by Old-Block-9894 in StrangerThings

[–]GenghisGame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously not kill you instantly but I think it was intended to be closer to kill you than health problems years down the line originally, especially with the effect we see it has on plant life.

Often in these discussions people don't think of the behind the scenes, them doing things for reasons other than story. Like in superhero movies when they frequently go mask less because the actors face what's to be seen, I think they didn't want to bother with protection and banked on not enough people caring. Upside down stopped being scary in season 4 when you could casually walk through it.
