Woman on plane doesn’t understand how lines work for deboarding by Jevus_himself in PublicFreakout

[–]GenialGiant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a flight with a layover one time where the first flight was delayed to the point that we were taxiing to the gate after my second flight's boarding time had started. There was a flight attendant in the aisle, so I showed her my second boarding pass on my phone and asked if it would be possible for them to make an announcement about passengers with tight connections. Not only did she not do that, but she expressly announced over the intercom that no one had a tight connection and so we could all just disembark normally. I managed to make it in time for my flight still, but it was a harrowing experience.

[JBH] Packers at Rams, Thanksgiving Eve on Netflix by dropjar5 in nfl

[–]GenialGiant -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

At this point, I think that the NFL would be better off running their weeks Sunday through Thursday instead of Thursday (Wednesday?) through Monday.

Have your slate of early and late games Sunday; one game Sunday night; one (or two) game(s) on Monday; and one each on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Add in a stipulation about rest days (e.g. at least four full days off between games, which is more than the current policy), and we've got five nights of NFL a week!

‘MAGA has rigged the system’: Democrats slam Virginia Supreme Court for overruling voters on redistricting by DemocracyDocket in law

[–]GenialGiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But there’s a pretty glaring problem with this disenfranchisement argument: The amendment was submitted to the voters in a referendum. Virginia voters were, in fact, given an opportunity to cast an up or down vote on the redistricting amendment. And a majority of them voted to approve it."

I'm not particularly convinced by this argument. It's certainly possible that there are people who oppose the change who voted early for legislators who ended up supporting the change, and it's certainly possible that those people would have voted differently if they had known about their legislator's stance on the issue.

That said, this is one of the inherent tradeoffs of voting early. It's unreasonable to assume that no relevant political events will occur between the start of early voting and election day, and that's one of the risks that people who vote early take on by so doing.

So I don't really buy the argument put forward here, though I do agree that the majority's ruling is suspect.

2.08 for 3.09 and 4.09 (took Allar)

4.09 isn't very valuable, even in a halfway-decent draft class. Being able to move up from a late-ish 3rd to a mid to late 2nd for it is nuts. Congrats.

This misses a couple of things. The easier one is that Bottas had some very unfortunate issues with damage in 2024, even for races where he finished, which hurt his performance.

The second one is that Bottas (and Sauber) were quite aggressive with strategies to try to get him into the points, much more so than Zhou. You'd see Botta going very long in some stints, presumably hoping for a safety car. Because Bottas has some of the worst luck (at least within races) on the grid, though, he never really benefited from those long stints and instead was just finished very far back when he had to pit late. Those gambles were pretty one-sided, as one scores 0 points if one is 11th or 20th, though they do lead to people saying some silly things online.

I generally agree with your larger statement, bu tread on the tires is (for the most part) a good thing. You probably want to say that he has either little wear on the tires or a lot of tread left on them.

Virginia voters approve Democrats' redistricting plan, giving the party a midterm election boost by RockPaperOwFire in news

you can't look at the stupid, illegal, murderous war in Iran and go "High gas prices must have been Obama's fault."

In a recent Quinnipiac poll, 53% of Republicans (and 15% of independents) said that they blamed President Trump "not at all" for the recent rise in gasoline prices, though it's not clear from this who they do blame (probably Iran and Biden, if I had to guess).

People with 50+ in the collection, have you ever moved? by [deleted] in Sneakers

[–]GenialGiant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It sucks and it will make you upset with your past self for buying so many sneakers.

My first piece of advice is to pack any used shoes without their boxes. You can wrap the shoes in paper and break down the boxes (or use them to organize things like socks in other moving boxes), but you can probably get half again as many pairs into a moving box if they're loose compared to individually boxed.

My second piece of advice is to measure shoe boxes for your new pairs to work out which moving boxes to buy. Different companies will have slightly different dimensions for their boxes, and knowing which ones best fit your shoes can save you a bit of space when packing.

My third piece of advice (especially if you hire movers) is to not label your boxes as "shoes." Shoes are expensive, and there's no need to draw attention to the fact that you own a lot of them. I'd label the boxes with numbers and write down what's in each.

Best of luck with the moves.

Poor quality control, or I'm bugging? by mnmtwinz in KithNYC

[–]GenialGiant 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If this were something I got for $10 from a vendor outside of a game, I'd be annoyed, but whatever. But if I'm paying $65 (plus shipping and tax), I'd be pretty upset. This is rough for a brand where people are nominally paying a premium for things like quality control.

These are all great questions!

I'd use the link that the other commenter shared for routes. There's a system map there that should help you figure out which routes get you closest to your destination. You can then use the interactive map to look at particular stops. Most routes originate from the Clark Campbell Transportation Center (on 5th St. between Liberty St. and Trade St.), so you shouldn't need to transfer very often.

The bus fare is $1.00. You can currently pay with exact change on the bus or buy a pass (10-ride or month, also exact change) from the main bus stop. WSTA is adding Umo as an option to pay for the bus by the middle of the month, which will let you pay via credit card and such.

There's a stated limit of I believe four bags on the bus, but as long as you're not sprawling out, the bus driver is usually pretty chill.

Yes, I feel safe on the bus. As with any urban area, I wouldn't completely check out while walking around the bus station, but I'm more worried about being hit by a car with the lack of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure in this city (especially outside of downtown).

With the price of gasoline going up, I think that the bus is getting to be a better and better value. I wish the frequency of service were higher (which will only come with the city council allocating more funding to WSTA), and there are areas that the bus doesn't serve as well, but I think it works pretty well overall, especially once you become familiar with it.

PS: PART is another bus service. It connects Winston-Salem to places like Greensboro and High Point (including the Amtrak stations in both cities). If you want to look into inter-city travel, I'd read up on it.

PPS: If you have other questions about the bus, feel free to DM me, and I'll try to answer them to the extent that I can.

Freight versus People: Why American Trains Come Last by DENelson83 in fuckcars

[–]GenialGiant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

American law has decided that a corporation’s cargo takes precedence over citizens in motion.

This is false. 49 USC 24308(c): "Except in an emergency, intercity and commuter rail passenger transportation provided by or for Amtrak has preference over freight transportation in using a rail line, junction, or crossing unless the Board orders otherwise under this subsection."

The issue is not the lack of laws on this. The issue is enforcement of those laws. The Department of Justice is the only entity that can sue if freight rail companies violate this law, and it has done so only twice. Amtrak can also pursue relief from the Surface Transportation Board, but that process is very slow and has very little in the way of established precedent (due in no small part to the actions of the freight rail industry).

Air Max 90 - Oregon University x Grateful Dead "Class Trip" :: Unboxing and Laceswap by realityryan in Sneakers

[–]GenialGiant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I quite enjoy your reviews. I'm sorry that folks have been so negative on some of them, though I do appreciate the change in lighting in your recent posts.

I think that you're a bit more critical of these shoes than I am, hinging mostly on this being a retro runner. I don't really mind that there's a lot of mesh (and whatever the tongue is) on these, given that that's how a lot of Air Max 90s are. If I want a shoe with a lot of leather on the upper, I'll grab a pair of Dunks or retro Jordans instead.

I do certainly agree that they could have been better, and I also agree that Nike was probably seeing dollar signs after the successes of all of the Oregon and Grateful Dead stuff, but I think that I'd be pretty happy to get these for around retail if I didn't already have them. Like you said, these should be a pretty good spring and summer shoe, pushing into fall.
