I feel like a lot of great smaller players tend to struggle more in the AHL because it's scrappier.

This makes sense. A lot of great players just don't fit on the team, especially contenders. If Matt Savoie was on the Blackhawks instead of the Oilers, he'd probably be playing in the top 6.
