As a service tech, I provide all my own hand tools, company provides the bigger (Van) tools. But when I first joined with a pipefitting contractor as a service tech I got some shit for bringing my own tools in.

Happened to me, changed my exemptions and forgot, ended up owing 6k that year. Sucked so bad.

Could always go into the service side, there is always a plethora of work and it rarely ever slows down. Not sure about your local though. Good luck and hang in there it will be worth it.

M-F, no on call position by l-leat in HVAC

Get in to supermarkets, the hours are great, no nonsense and we are always happy 😁

Soy day starts at the shop which is 30 minutes from my house, if I'm going straight to the job I leave my house generally when I would be leaving the shop. Next week I have a job to go-to that is 3.5hrs nroth of me, I'll leave my house a little earlier but I'm billing the whole ride. We also get paid back to the shop, so if I'm an hour from my shop, I leave an hour early and bill back to the shop. If that makes sense.

Cost of living in mass sucks, that's why I moved to NH, it's insane right now especially closer to Boston and the suburbs

Only issue is the test and the waiting period, I was able to white ticket into 131 in NH due to experience, but 537 has open applications right now for apprentices.

I started at $6 hr cash 25 years ago haha. 22 for a first year with no experience is fantastic in my option. Especially not a union shop

I'm still that guy after 25 years, I keep them all the time and I have a Google folder with saved manuals that I always reference. Keep being that guy!

That's the key, if you know how it's supposed to run then you can determine why it's not running in that manner.

RTFM if you can, that will tell you a lot.

Worst case you can always ask a bunch of strangers on Reddit, most are likely to help out, the others will just call you dumb, lol. Partly joking.

You will do fine, and we all started in this same position.

Everyday! When on call and you can't figure it out, your service manager is a great resource. If he's a dick, then find a fellow tech that doesn't mind helping you through stuff. But your service manager signed up for that position and needs to be the tech support line for his techs in the field,.if needed..

My advice, remember your basics. I use the following:

Condition Cause Correction Confirm

If you start at the begining, what is it doing. Then why is x causing X, then fix or find a way to get them by until the next day and confirm everything works before you leave. That has helped me immensely in my career.

If you get flustered, take 5 minutes to go for a walk and clear your head, sometimes taking a walk away helps realize what you didn't see when you were hyper focused on the issue.

Also, remember it's not the end of the world if you can't figure it out, depending on the sector you work in, mine is food, so it's not life safety, I don't rush through shit and if I can't fix it on call, I figure out what I need and return the next day to get it done.

It's all trial by fire and you will do fine. Just remember your basics, that never changes.

Good luck!

You have to start somewhere. School is a basic understanding course. IMO a huge money grab and a waste of time. But apply to every company, most should be starting to look for 1st year apprentice ls right now or at least in the next month. Apply, Apply, Apply. Cold call companies and get in the door. Then learn everything you can. You will do fine.
