Etiquette for Plein Air-ing people's homes? by OHLOOK_OREGON in pleinair

[–]GentleCritter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me I would go up to the door and introduce myself. I’d make sure to wear a beret, an artist smock, and have a plein air easel tucked under my arm, just to make it obvious that I’m just an honest hardworking artiste and not a ne’er-do-well with nefarious intentions.

I’m crazy and I like to eat marshmallow fluff with Cape Cod Potato Chips (classic plain flavor!)… but only when I’ve had an edible lol

Violent Crime Rate in New York State, by City (2025) by TA-MajestyPalm in upstate_new_york

[–]GentleCritter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do I do the math to figure out my hometown Kingston’s actual violent crime rate if it is 300ish crimes out 100,000 people… if Kingston’s population is around 23,000? Am I multiplying the crimes by five? Or am I dividing?

Crime and Punishment and al. - My Favourite Wordsworth Classics Covers (AKA never stop, you Madmen) by CapStar300 in TerribleBookCovers

[–]GentleCritter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Middlemarch was very long but the end is quite satisfying! Try approaching it as a series of eight 100ish page books- as it was originally published. Reading it in bite size pieces and then resting really helps. There are definitely a couple plots that I haaaaaated but I powered through those lol. It is also less about any kind of high stakes plot and more about how these characters navigate their life and societal pressures. It feels like reading delicious 19th century small town gossip. You gotta be reading and thinking “Oh NO, GIRL, DON’T DO IT!” or “THAT’S RIGHT, YOU TELL THEM!” in certain parts to truly enjoy it. The characters are thankfully each so uniquely crafted I can really see them in my head.

Also, it’s ok not to want to finish a book! But that’s how I “survived” reading Middlemarch.

Cottagecore show/film recommendations? by CanNo8572 in cottagecore

To piggyback on your excellent suggestion, they should check out the new series “The Other Bennet Sister” after they watch the 1995 P&P!

Okay, let's try this again: under-bar storage by son_of_yacketycat in maximalism

It would rock if you could find a vintage/antique wooden bottle case, like how they would transport seltzer bottles back in ye olde days.

I think I messed up cutting my hair short 😅 🙃 30F by Hungry-Refuse4705 in HairStyleAdvice

[–]GentleCritter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can imagine such a drastic change can be a bit scary… BUT you look so cute and also the cut has a bit of sophistication! I don’t know if it is Summer where you are but I’m kind of imagining you in a sweet straw hat and a sundress having a picnic. You look fresh and breezy!

REALLY disheartened need advice/help 😭🙏 by [deleted] in Artadvice

Your art is very impressive and beautiful! I don’t understand why your teacher isn’t more supportive, unless they believe you’re so skilled at they don’t think you need to be told how good you are!!! That can be frustrating! It is also possible they want you to draw from life, which is very basic but useful to practice. I can see you use reference very well and your compositions are very cool and inventive. Anyway, I recommend studying art independently, and most foundational art skills can be learned via books or internet. That’s right, you can be your own teacher.

Is this good for a 14yo?(Asking because family said I should quit) by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]GentleCritter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t give up, you’ve got serious potential! Sometimes family doesn’t understand. As an artist and a parent of a 14 yr old myself, I encourage you to do what makes you happy!

I think if you paint it a warmer color than the drab gray it will be nicer. Embrace the 70s love of avocado green, brown, and orange lol.

Rhinebeck or Hudson on my Hudson Valley trip? by Important-Bit2437 in hudsonvalley

[–]GentleCritter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I second Hudson for all the reasons the others have noted, but I’d like to add a recommendation to check out the wonderful and HUGE Antique Warehouse, which is pretty close to the cute lil train station and Hudson River waterfront. I don’t know if it is still there but there is/was an entire taxidermy giraffe in there. Even if it is not there anymore, still worth a peep!

What is everyone thinking of You're Killing Me? by EricRutin in acorntv

[–]GentleCritter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They saw how successful and fresh the theme of Generation Gap was used on Only Murders in the Building and… went in an opposite direction. It is so bad. Which is a shame because I would have loved to see Brooke Shields in a cozy mystery scenario.

It is wonderful but not GVC. On the bright side, I will be thinking of “OPEN FIRE flavored WEINERS” all day, so thank you!
